My husband and I dropped into The Artist Workshop a few days ago while visiting downtown Grass Valley. We really enjoyed the process of picking our project (we decided to paint a garden gnome). I’m currently nine months pregnant so it was nice to find a project that we could do together. The owner was running the shop that day. It was nice to meet her and she was very helpful. She has set up such a special little shop in Grass Valley. I can’t wait for my daughter to get to the age where I can bring her in to paint! We would suggest this as a definite stop in Grass Valley.

It it great to take the kids in my family here to create and explore. The youngest love mixing colors on the Dino and wall paper, the older ones make great gifts and receive helpful hints from Margo on «how to»…and did I mention no clean up! The glitter stops here.

Both my kids (4 and 2 ½) and I enjoy coming to The Artist Workshop. We’ve done a bit of paint your own pottery, paint your own wooden toy, and open art. My kids love to paint the dinosaur in the back. I had my daughter’s birthday party at their previous location in 2012, and now at their new location on Mill St. there is a private room in the back for parties/​classes. We’ve received candles that were made at the workshop, which are fragrant and unique. I have been wanting to attend their Diva Night, which sounds fun and also get my kids involved in some of their camps. This is a great place for kids and adults.

Margo has brought a wonderful new business to town and we’ve been fans since it opened. I have a card on file for my youngest to drop in anytime and play for an hour (she’s 2.5) and my oldest and I go here often to do paint-​your-​own pottery projects. I also have been to a ladies’ night here where we brought our own snacks and even a bottle of wine and tried our hand at stamp carving. Very fun! I love that the Artist Workshop has something for every age and that Margo is always dreaming up new projects and evolving the business. There’s also a facebook page for the business which I find useful for learning about summer camps and new projects.

I can see where this might be good for older kids. But I went with my 5 year old on a rainy day during their drop in hour. The owner was not friendly at all and basically said that my son could do any art that he wanted without even giving some guidance. It was our first time there and so I really didn’t know what they offered. My son kind of made his way around the different stations. Painted a cardboard display they had, made a paper ornament since it was around Christmas. But No guidance whatsoever from the owner. If you are going to run a Child’s art shop maybe have some ideas on projects a 5 year old can accomplish. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that I can see it would be good for those older kids (ages 9+) who are more artistic. Also it is pretty expensive.
