My friend and I took 6 lessons from Jason — I’ve been playing 1 yr, and she was a complete beginner. Jason has a really interesting take on lessons. For one, he prepares more than any other teacher I’ve had(I’ve had a few for other instruments in middle school/high school/etc.), audio recording the lessons, and having extra lesson materials/handouts online, too. Two, it wasn’t(in our case) the typical«here’s a song, learn it» type of teaching — I found the actual format to be much more dynamic and valuable, honestly, since you can pick a song and learn it using Youtube or something. Instead, Jason takes the time to explain different chords and picking patterns and scales and shows you how they go together(the last part is key, since it sounds like it might be boring to just learn scales and chord patterns and things, but in fact Jason gives you some great and fun sounding stuff to start with), so that even if you are a beginner you can start making your own music and playing things that sound real. The immediate effect of Jason’s lessons on my playing was that I felt that my ear became more developed and I felt more confident hearing songs on the radio and trying to play along without tabs, and I also felt more confident and able to embellish on the songs I learned on my own. I even got into a jam session with my way more experienced roommate(we solo’ed over the blues together), and he said I sounded great! It took me years of sax lessons to feel this comfortable and natural on my instrument, and in some ways, I think I feel more attuned to the guitar in terms of soloing, improv, learning songs by ear, and creating music, than I ever got with my sax despite playing for over a decade. One thing I would say is that you really get as much as you put into this — the real learning time will be taking the things said in your lesson and practicing at home, and if you don’t practice the stuff, you get half as much out of it, for sure. Also, I think Jason’s style of teaching is more suited to someone who is not a complete beginner, since he talks fast, covers a lot, and expects a lot from you. I know that I got more out of the lessons than my friend, and someone who had no knowledge of music at all might feel a little lost. Though, maybe the difference in my friend and my playing abilities made it difficult for Jason to teach the lessons in a way that were accessible and interesting to both of us. And finally, you should definitely appreciate rock music(with a bit of metal influences) to totally appreciate the lessons. Jason seems to be into that kind of stuff and a lot of the little riffs he suggest fall into that category. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this guy to someone who takes their rock guitar playing seriously and wants to develop their techniques composing and soloing and ad libbing. That type of stuff is hard to learn from a Youtube video, but Jason makes it easy. As soon as I get a job I’ll definitely sign up for another set of lessons — despite being very reasonably priced compared to most private teachers, sometimes a girl is just broke!

I’ve been taking lessons with Jason off and on for a year and a half, and I would enthusiastically recommend his services to anyone interested in learning to play guitar. His knowledge of music theory and guitar techniques is impressive, but more important is his ability to present information in a clear, concise way so that you learn just enough to advance your playing week by week without being overloaded with new information. Before taking lessons I tried learning from various books, but I felt like I was just copying the exercises on the page with no real understanding of how to put those notes together into something practical. With Jason I feel like I’m really learning how music works, and I can take the knowledge I’ve gained to create my own exercises and, ultimately, my own music.

Jason is a wealth of knowledge. I have learned more from him in the past 7 years then I learned in music college. He knows the ins and outs of becoming a successful musician on both a technical and industry level. As a musician Jason excels and I am very proud to be able to say that I have learned so much under his wing. Being a lifetime student himself. Jason is constantly studying new and improved ways of doing things and I trust that as he grows as a musician, I will grow as a student. With a perfect pitch and near perfect memory, Jason seems to easily absorb everything he learns and he willingly/eagerly passes on this valuable information in easily consumed sizes as to not overwhelm me as his student. I look forward to many more years of learning valuable information from Jason.
