At the Spears YMCA the staff seem friendly and it has ample, varied work out equipment. I do not use the locker rooms so I cannot comment on their cleanliness as other reviewers have. My low rating is due to the lack of climate control(one day it’s stuffy, the next it’s freezing) and unreliable WiFi network. Both of these are first world problems but I don’t expect them at a facility that charges me $ 48 a month. Update: They seemed to have improved WiFi system with a password. It is more stable. Increased to 3 stars.

Beautiful facility. Joined with my roommate for $ 65/mo total and have been rocking the yoga classes!(Well, maybe not«rocking» them. Let’s just call it «going to» them.) Membership includes access to all sorts of equipment, a large pool and all sorts of classes. Classes = yoga, spinning, Barre, Zumba, Body Pump, etc. So far, so good! I’ll update a couple months in. :) There are three beautiful rooms: a spin studio, a yoga studio, and a light-filled group excercise room. I’ve seen a few comments about the state of the bathroom/showers. They seemed clean enough to me, but having said that, I don’t usually shower there. One thing I will say is that you should be prepared to see kids running around. They must host after-school care, league sports, etc., because there are tiny humans everywhere!

Lots of equipment, but rest rooms are dirty and staff always talking among selves(including gripes. about mgmt. and other employees). They have their 10-second rote greetings, but are not very helpful. Not professional or interested. Very low level of personal energy. Trainers minimally trained.

While it is true that they cut down the number of towels per patron to 2, that is no big deal. I always bring a bath sheet to wrap myself in when exiting the shower and a bath towel for drying. To tell you the truth I only use the Y towel to put under my feet while I dry and dress. The locker room is a mess. They used to have a great gal that kept things tip top but now that she retired there are serious issues. Also many of the machines in the weight room are in dire need of repair. The staff are wonderfuly friendly. There are at least 2 people at the front desk that do know me by name and regularly enquire about the other ladies I work out with. It isn’t easy for them to keep things up because of a lack of funds. Being a Y and not a commercial gym, they do their best to try to include the less affluent in the city so that can be an additional strain but isn’t reaching out to those in need part of the mission of the Y?

Today, three showers in the ladies’ locker room did not have soap, and the shower drain was clogged. Also, two of the toilet stalls had no toilet paper. I know they closed the ladies’ locker room over Memorial Day weekend for a week to redo it, but it’s not being kept up, by the Budd group, as you can already find mold in between the tiles, on one shower curtain, etc. And, there are no towels in the locker rooms any more because they think people would steal the sad looking things. And there’s a sign on the door to dry your feet so you don’t leave tracks on the floor. After getting planter warts and athletes’ foot since the renovations, I don’t want my feet on the floor, or on my own towel. What if I rubbed my whole body after wiping my feet? I’d have itching problems at a low level, all over my body. Do I want athletes foot on my breast? No thanks. Do I want warts on my elbows? Again the answer is no. So, if I don’t have a little white towel, I might track water into the halls which might cause someone to slip, then they might sue the Y, and it he doesn’t go to class and dies at a young age. All because we’re denied white towels.

This gym is great. They have over 20 different types of classes at all time periods of the day, so you are guaranteed to find something you like, and at a time you can make it to. They have a ton of cardio machines, and the weight area is huge. I also love that you can volunteer there. I have never had to wait to use anything, and the Body Pump classes are amazing. The instructors and staff are incredibly nice and helpful. They also have a huge indoor pool; I have not swam yet, but I plan to, which is something I never would have done at my old pool because it was always taken. In response to the other review about the women’s bathrooms, I do not think that reflects the gym, just the women’s bathrooms. They did just re-paint them, and I have never found any issue with them. They are very basic, but I’m not sure what more you would need in a locker room besides restrooms, showers, and lockers. I have not tried the bathing suit dryer, but I have seen a bunch of people use it without any issues. I always bring soap from home, so I’m unsure about how much is available, but I think either way what you bring from home would be better anyway. The same idea goes towards the towels as well. Overall, this is a great gym that has something to offer anyone who wants to workout, no matter what kind of workout that may be.
