They sat us down and 25 mins later we still had not been greeted by a waitress or anything, I get they are busy but when people who sat down after us already had been served their food, that’s a little ridiculous! My little 2yr old cousin kept saying«juice» over and over, had to leave when we didn’t even order those yet, We got up and left and not one person said a word, obviously they don’t care about their customers… I’ll go down the road to Groton townhouse next time!

Average diner. Nice staff. Coffee tasted watered down. Everything lacked flavor. Home fries could’ve used more onions, butter and salt. Omelet I ordered was more egg than meats and cheese. Nice to hang out at a local place but that’s about it.

Terrible, slow service. Have been here twice and each time the service is ridiculously slow. The wait is hardly worth the mediocre food. Came in for breakfast today. Sat in our booth and waited and waited all while watching two tables that came after us get drinks and order food. Never even saw our server.

I love a good breakfast plus minus the grease. I ordered two chocolate chip pancakes, bacon and home fries. Everything tastes great, however half the pancake was soaked in bacon grease. Some may enjoy this but for me I had to ask for extra napkins to pat the pancake and bacon. Deal breaker for another visit? No, but I will just know to request separate plates. My husband ordered a meal that came with the biscuits and gravy which he raved about. My mother in law wasn’t able to finish her meal because the portions were so large which was nice for the price. My father in law had pancakes and eggs and had no complaints. Overall, we would definitely go back. Just a heads up though if grease isn’t your thing, just ask for separate plates!

Fast and friendly staff, breakfast was really good, sausage gravy is on point! One of my favorite spots to visit when I visit home. Quite possibly the cleanest open kitchen I’ve seen

Here over 20 minutes and no waitress to take my order, just a drink from the hostess. There was only four other tables with people at 3 pm. If you want to eat, better luck somewhere else.

Best breakfast in Groton… so far. As a southerner, I pride myself of knowing true greasy spoon is supposed to taste like! If its no dripping in lard and covered in salt… it ain’t fit to eat! Ok, we’ll, that’s not exactly true… but this place is better than Groton Townhouse and the portions are extreme. I’m a fat boy and couldn’t eat all of «The Mess.» Food was hot, coffee was hot, and as typical up here… the service was cold… but you come to expect it. I don’t pay for service, I pay for what I put«in the tank!» It’s a good place at a reasonable price. My wife and I ate there yesterday and breakfast(that neither one of us could finish) cost $ 20…and nobody got sick… This is my «go-to» breakfast place for now! So far, best breakfast around

I decided to stop in on a random Monday because I had the day off. I got the traditional classic with poached eggs. First off, I love that they’ll do poached eggs here because other breakfast spots in the area will say«2 eggs any style» and then say they won’t do poached. Then don’t tell me any style! They would be a 5 star, but service was pretty slow. That being said, when I was served, it was courteous. The eggs were cooked a little longer than they should have been, the toast was well buttered, the bacon wasn’t overdone but it wasn’t hot, and the potatoes were how home fries should be. I’ll keep coming here and to the one in New London because it’s fairly priced, there’s a variety, and I’ve never had a bad experience between the two locations.

4 stars for what it is, a classic laid back diner. Great breakfast with reasonable prices and the attitude you would expect from a diner staff. Don’t dare try to be seated without your entire party but that doesn’t bother me at all. I really enjoy this place and the food is darn good!

Super yummy!!! I had the corn beef sandwich with turkey and rice soup. Loved it and if we come back to this area, I will definitely be back!

Fun and pleasant family atmosphere. Prices were good and the food variety was good. A nice diner sit down. The pumpkin pie was good to go.

This restaurant is always busy. Their food is great and always hot when arriving at your table. You never wait more than 5 – 10 mins for a table and never wait long for your food arrive.

Fantabulous food! Great prices that are extremely reasonable. Had brunch here for the first time last week, and absolutely loved it. The food alone, I would definitely give 5 stars. Our server was very kind, and attentive. Besides her I found all the other servers to be very sour. Every single one of them was scowling, and looked miserable. I took off a star because I thought the atmosphere from the wait staff was off-putting. We entered, no one acknowledged us, and there were servers all around. Plenty of tables open, and we still had to stand around waiting for 5 min. Not a long wait, but there was no need for it. I’m closer to the East Lyme location, and will frequent it often. The food there is just as great, but their servers are actually friendly, and welcoming.

The menu restrictions don’t allow you to really avoid the homefries, but you should. Like slimy potatoes with chips of onion. Nasty Cheese sauce was another kind of orange. Not even close to natural. Pancakes were rubbery and possibly left out or microwaved before served. The watery fake maple syrup was also an awful highlight. Avoid. We sent almost everything back or didn’t finish. I’d never go back.

I must have gone on one of their off nights. I was so thrilled to try this place due to the reviews. I ordered the classic favorite to go. I wish I would have inspected my food before we left. The food had obviously been sitting for a bit. eggs and bacon were spongy. potatoes were anything but crunchy. they are very mushy. And last but not least my toast was burnt. Ended up tossing most of the food and making my own. I’m not sure that I will be brave enough to try this place again.

The Shack is one of those places that I grew up going to, so I was happy that it was just as good as I remembered. This place is a MACHINE, even if you come in and see a long line at the door, the servers and bussers really keep things moving. They’ve got breakfast classics and a few interesting options for specials– lots of cool egg and veggie combos. It’s a good place for a solid, easy breakfast. My only complaint is that this location tends to be frequented by Connecticut College students, some of whom are here for a greasy hangover breakfast. Totally fine with me, but we had more than one instance while we waited in line where students were saying vulgar or inappropriate things while children and their families waited nearby– just something to watch out for!

Keep in mind this is a diner. A good diner. I grew up going to the original Shack in Niantic next to the driving range. They have branched out over the years, and the original is gone. Nonetheless, the food is good. I got a turkey wrap today and was not expecting it to taste as good as it tasted. And that was just a simple turkey wrap. Diners can be hit or miss. If you eat at any of the Shack locations, know that you will be happy. And although I have not tried them, their pies look pretty incredible.

Phenomenal food and great prices! Good home cooked meals! We had to take part of ours with us because there is so much food! The pies are clearly homemade too! Life’s short, have pie!

We went into the Shack today for a quick lunch. The waitress was very accommodating and wonderful about meeting our needs on a time crunch. The best part though was the food! Despite the rush on our order is came out perfect. This place dishes out the best cornbread I have ever had, and I’m from Texas so I have had a lot of cornbread in my life. Their kids menu is well balanced and a great value. I cannot recommend this place enough. You have got to stop in and try! Didn’t have time today but this pies and cakes look divine. We have added the Shack to our place of go to restaurants!
