Neat place to visit for history buffs. However, much of the Fort was roped off/closed to visitors when we visited. Only one extremely steep staircase to the top of the complex was open, and we weren’t allowed to even get to any of the viewing platforms. All of the modern orange caution fencing and Keep Out signs everywhere really detracted from the beauty of the ruins. Not very well-curated, especially when compared to Fort Gaines. Very few plaques throughout explaining what you’re looking at. Also, the very modern blue storage walls in some of the compartments was extremely distracting from the historical nature of this place. Overall, we got the feeling that this Fort has been allowed to rot and decay and little attention has been paid to its upkeep until very recently. Museum was kind of cool, but small. Also, as a side note, it was about a half mile walk from the Ferry dock to the entrance of the Fort. We were not prepared for a hike. Not too bad on a cool day, but definitely not doable on a hot summer day. If we had known it was that far from the ferry, we would’ve driven across.

My first impression was $ 7 a person for this? However as we walked around we were sucked in. This is a huge complex. Our next visit we will bring lunch and fishing poles and sit on the beach. They were doing a little bit of repair on the Fort while we were there but it looks like it would take millions to bring it back. On the way out we realized we missed parts.

While in Alabama for a few days in October we decided to skip the Tanger Outlets and do something different — a.k.a. Fort Morgan. The first thing we noticed is it’s a hell of a long way to the end of the road where Fort Morgan is! You will want to gas up before making the trek out there. There actually was a gas station, convenience store and even a couple of restaurants, but for the most part it’s just miles and miles of presumably expensive beach houses. I must admit that the idea of going to Fort Morgan wasn’t immediately appealing, but once we got there it was much more intriguing. Walking around the fort and exploring the nooks and crannies where the soldiers defended the shore was totally cool, and at one point I felt a shiver run down my spine so we may not have been alone! Nice museum/gift shop as well, and public bathrooms and a soda machine were available. Admission was reasonable, costing us about $ 18 for three adults. Great place to get historical when you are tired of the beach.

We vacationed in Fort Morgan last week. Of course we had to visit the fort while there. It was beautiful! The lovely lady that was at the gate was the sweetest lady! She seemed to really hope that we enjoyed our visit. The fort itself was very cool. What a neat historical structure. And we got the most amazing pictures of our kids there! I can’t wait to hang them!

Went here in May 2014 on a road trip. It is not free, as some reviewers wrote — we paid around $ 10 as I recall. It is also quite a drive, but a lovely drive! If you have the time and the weather is nice, definitely a great way to spend a couple of hours. The fort is just lovely, quite large, lots to explore, very visually interesting, nice to climb around and explore. And a beachy area on the grounds as well. There are some placards with historical info up on top of the fort. We climbed around, got lots of cool photos, and sat on the grass inside the main structure and had a snack in the sunshine. It was definitely my kind of activity!

If you’ve seen one civil war fort you’ve seen them all. You can tour the place in 20 min and I’m not sure it’s worth the 22 mile drive from gulf shores for 7 bucks a person. On a positive side, the views are nice but bring bug spray bc the Mosquitos will get you. Go only if you haven’t seen a fort like this before.

This historic war site is a neat place to visit especially since it’s FREE. Much better for tourists than Souvenir City where you may be seduced into buying a cheesy t-shirt as a result of your sun-drunken stupor. It’s small, won’t take you long to tour, and offers beautiful views of the ocean. We didn’t see many other travelers there so it was pretty relaxing being away from the busy Gulf Shores parkway. I can’t imagine it gets very crowded. Some of the rock steps and walkways can be difficult to navigate so that is something to consider when traveling with someone who has limited mobility. I’m not a history buff, more of a math nerd, and I still enjoyed it.
