Okay, so there are people hanging around outside the store who kind of unnerve me by yelling at no one in particular and drinking out of paper bags. There’s a gas station, a fried chicken place, and a convenience store in the same little area, and some colorful characters seem to wander aimlessly around the parking lot. I’m not sure I ever would have gone in had I not really needed a bottle of wine or some beer one night when I didn’t have time to range farther afield from Dickeyville because, well, from the outside, this place isn’t promising. But, well, you know what? They have a zillion different reasonable malbecs, and a lousy beer selection but with a couple good staples — Fat Tire, Guinness, that sort of thing. I was really happy that they had the selection of good stuff they did despite the fact that it looks like a lot of their customers may just hang around outside and then come in to find ways to get drunk as efficiently as possible. Also, the lady who appears to rule the roost here, every time I’ve been in, has made a point of chatting with me, letting me know that there are wine discounts on Wednesdays, and letting me know that if there are any specific wines I’d like to try, I can just let her know and she’ll order some. She seemed delighted to see someone wandering around the wine section, which is probably why she talked to me. But it was really nice. I really like shopping at the extremely well-stocked Mills, say, but they don’t do this. So, yeah, for the environment this place is in, I’d say it does a pretty damn good job, and I’m happy it’s there.
