Just over three years ago I received a review of the day(does Unilocal even do that anymore?) for a latin market – since closed – in my DC neighborhood called Mercadito Ramos( ). I wish Mercadito’s owners could have consulted with the owners of Frutimex or seen this store with its bins of attractive fresh produce and aisles of clean shelves packed with canned goods, dried beans, and of course all things Goya. Depending on where you live in Hackettstown, this store is a great place to bop into if one doesn’t feel like driving all the way to the big grocery stores. My mother and I stopped in here so she could get some broccoli and I found quince, which I missed at my fall farmers market and therefore couldn’t can any cranberry quince chutney for Thanksgiving. Problem solved! I also got some canned hominy and dried black beans for a stew that I like to make in my crockpot as well as some Goya seasoning and olive oil, which is some of the fruitiest Spanish olive oil you can taste. There’s also a butcher in the back with attractive fresh meats on display who I’m sure would be happy to help you with your selections while you practice your Spanish. It’s fascinating that a store this small has a real live butcher for you to get to know, a concept lost in large chain grocery stores. Frutimex is another welcome establishment on Main Street in Hackettstown, one that I would love to have in walking distance of where I live, just like the one I used to frequent around the corner back in DC.
