In a little town, it’s nice to have an alternative to the mainstream suppliers. In HMB, Ocean Shore Hardware, an ACE franchise, owns the market for paint, hardware and it’s sister lumber yard, run by Big Creek of Santa Cruz county, has cornered the local wood businesss. So, here’s this small, family-run lumber yard with a small, but healthy hardware shop, sitting at the end of Harvard street in Princeton-by-the-Sea. Mom, dad and son all work the place and do a great job of supplying the locals with what they need. It’s a real refreshing change from the fancier, more crowded setting of Ocean Shore. A note about Ocean Shore: When I first moved to the coast from SF in early ’96, Ocean Shore was staffed with the rudest, most pissed-off young staff I’d ever encountered. It was painful to transact there. I imagined that the owner was incenting the behavior through cash bonuses, the bad attitudes were so prevalent. I’m not sure if the place has changed hands, but there has been a complete turnaround and the staff is friendly and helpful. However, I try to rotate patronization to Driftwood as much as possible. There’s something wholesome and right about supporting local family businesses.
