How is it possible Unilocal could find such a gem while flying down 95? Previous reviews shined so we followed the path into Halifax. A resident there on the street commented that if Washington had slept in Halifax, it would be the only town that would not have changed since his visit. The exception would be The Hen and the Hog. Brilliant takes on Southern cooking were devoured to the last morsel. Chicken salad and BBQ sandwich. Tremendous home-made chips and perfectly smooth grits as sides. The space is a bit dark but inviting. Great furniture and decorations. Would love to try this place for dinner-or is it supper?

Awesome ambiance, great location, and definitely a place to visit for foodies. Great beer selection and the food and desserts were delicious. The staff was very friendly but the service was slower than it should have been. We had a large group so that might be expected. Wouldn’t knock them for it.

You won’t be disappointed, in fact, I expect you’ll be amazed. The Hen and the Hog has fully embraced the farm to table movement and I truly appreciate that. Their attention to quality and a creative menu offering provided me with a dining experience that was one of the best I have ever experienced. Local beef, a roasted garlic wild mushroom and kale risotto, homemade sweet potato ice cream, a selection of NC beers. Absolutely awesome.

New restaurant in Halifax. This place is ideal for special occasions. We went there for dinner this evening and were very impressed. Excellent cook, lots of local NC sources for cheese, wine and beer. Shrimp and grits, huge pork chops, excellent steak, a creative desert menu and quite a variety on the appetizer list. There isn’t this quality restaurant within 50 miles.

We were here for lunch and it was nothing short of amazing! We had the Croque Monsoir, Sweet Potato tart, and some ice cream for dessert! The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated, not overly kitschy… just a simple elegance. The server we had was very attentive but not overly so! She let us take our time and answered any questions we had about the menu. The menu had a wonderful selection of local products with descriptions that were mouth-watering! The sweet potato tart had a delicious reduced balsamic glaze that really enhanced the flavor of the sweet potato and the goat cheese that was baked inside it. The Croque Monsoir was an interesting twist on the traditional with pimento cheese! If you like Collards, be sure to try theirs, they are cooked really well; nice and tender with just the right bite of vinegar! Give them a try!
