I’m a bit mixed on my first time dealing with hypnosis. The first thing I’ll say is, it’s NOT like what you see in movies and in TV… I was aware the entire time, and I wasn’t under some kind of spell. I volunteered to be put under, but it’s not as if I was asleep in any way. One of the keys to it is focusing on your breath work. I do some yoga, so I’m a bit familiar with how important that can be. Anyway, eyes closed, focusing on the instructor’s voice, and keeping up with my breath work gave me a sort of power nap feeling after just a 4 – 5 minute session. I feel a large part of it is keeping your eyes closed. I feel it really assists the theory of «out of sight, out of mind.» Eventually, keeping focus on the instructor’s voice and my breathing, I didn’t feel as if there was a small audience around, watching me. I just kept my focus. I’m sure it wouldn’t be the same to have your eyes opened, but that goes with any sort of distractions. You subtract one of your senses, try to heighten the others, and your brain really goes into a sense of hyper focusing. At no point did I feel as if I had no control of myself. What you see on TV and in movies with hypnosis is pure Hollywood theater… and honestly, that may have ruined my expectations going into this hypnosis session. To be honest, I would like to go through another session, now that I know what to expect. This may be something where taking a few reps at it will help you understand it better. Plus, like I said, a quick 5 minute session had me feeling like I just took a power nap… so that’s a good selling point for me to try hypnosis once again.
