Planet Fitness – Hamden

Love this gym. Enough machines and weights to go around. Staff is exceptional.
Gym is kept very clean.
My only negative is they can’t get the TV channels right and would be nice if not so many news channels. Would love hgtv or food network.

Very nice facility, but there are only about 4 paper towel dispensers in the gym and they are almost always jammed.

I just joined and i’m already a fan. I have been a member at many gyms before and I can say that today’s sign up experience with Kelly was THE best, easiest, no-​pressure, no-​attitude gym registration I’ve had. She answered my questions, showed me around, gave me all the information, and efficiently got me signed up for the plan I chose, without trying to upsell me.
It’s a basic facility, but that is exactly what I need. A treadmill for when it’s too dark, cold, or the weather’s too bad to run outside. I’ve been member at the Edge and LA Fitness before and yes, they classes and more amenities, but if you aren’t using those you’re wasting money. I will also say that having been member at multiple PF locations previously, this one is by far the nicest, cleanest, most updated one I’ve seen.
Time will tell if my enthusiasm continues (will update rating if necessary) but as of today I’m a happy customer.
Note re: Those complaining about having to send a letter to cancel in writing — that was all very clearly explained in the sign up process and you signed off on the contract (not to mention that’s standard practice for most gyms). So it hardly warrants a 1 star review.

I’ve been a member of planet fitness for like 5 years. I knew what I was buying when I joined and for the most part most locations like Stamford when I lived there were acceptable. Nothing special but I just wanted to work out.
However this location is awful. I tried for a year to see if they would make improvements but it’s just getting worse. While the staff is friendly they don’t make workout out here enjoyable. Paper towels r never restocked so every machine is filled with someone else’s sweet. The wifi broke two moths ago and has yet to be replaced and machines break and our fixed at a snails pace. Yet for as little as they do or provide their are more signs telling you to wipe this or replace that then any other gym I’ve ever been to. Be nice if they’re employees did as much as the request of their patrons. Place is dingy and well the edge is right next door, the same price and way nicer. So if your on a budget and don’t care I guess you can go here but I think you will end up canceling your membership like me because enough is enough

I joined in June 2014 and was initially happy with my experience. After I moved to North Carolina, I called to cancel my membership willing to pay the $ 58 buyout fee. The woman who answered said I could only cancel in person no matter what. I told her that I was in NC and unable to make it to CT. She told me she would look into it and put me on hold (with an attitude). 10 minutes later, she said I would be able to cancel in writing, contradicting her original statement. However, if I wanted to cancel in writing, I would have to write a formal letter addressed to planet fitness stating at least 3 reasons why I wish to cancel my membership along with an enclosed check/​money order for the buyout fee, all of which had to be certified, meaning I had to spend another $ 3 at the post office. Finally after another phone call and sending out the request to cancel, I had finally cancelled my membership. Planet Fitness has terrible customer service and makes it extremely difficult to cancel once you join. Because of the delay in mail (almost 4 days to get there), I missed the deadline and I was charged for another month ($ 20) and the annual fee ($ 40). Think about this before you join. I would recommend «The Edge“next door if you want a helpful experience. I have had many friends join there and I hear nothing but great feedback about it.

I recently had to ship out and called to cancel. They said I would need to come in. Obviously that’s impossible so they said I would need to send a certified letter and state the reasoning for wanting to cancel. Um, hello. I’m not even in this country.
We all know why they do this. to stop people from canceling and to milk them for a little while longer. It should be illegal. They have all the information available to confirm your account over the phone. like any REPUTABLE business would allow.

I really like this place. Just moved here and wanted to join a gym without paying insane prices. This place was exactly that. Staff is nice, gym is clean, tons of machines, an entire area dedicated to circuit training, what more could I ask for?

Why would you deal with poor customer service when you can pay the same price for a better gym? Go to the Edge next door for a better experience.

What a really nice planet fitness! Opened up not that long ago in Hamden plaza, with the usual 24 – 5 hours during the week and 7 – 7 on the weekends. They have a ton of treadmills and ellipticals. Love the stand up and lay down booths! There is also a firming machine as well as some sort of aqua massage. Very clean inside and smiling staff. Always great to be a black card member :)
