Great food, but very robotic, poor customer service. I came around early evening and ordered the 2 can dine special coupon fish and more. When I came in at the counter, the cashier never bothered to greet or even acknowledge that I was ready to order. It wasn’t a matter of receiving special treatment, but a matter basic etiquette and respect. I actually then stated to the cashier that I was ready to order. Not even a work of ‘hello or how are you”, just«what would you like to order». The tone was quite robotic and lacked any sense of emotion. I had also requested a senior drink for my mother, which I never had to pay. However, the cashier still had to charge me regular price since I had used a coupon. I didn’t want to argue so I just paid the price. When I received my order, not even a word of «thank you, come back and see us», but the cashier just handed me the tray, with a look as if I was being a disturbance. I will say this the food was great, no complaints. But someone really needs to train the management and staff from district level of the importance in providing basic customer service skills.

As another reviewer wrote, this is not the Surf Rider. Nor is it haute cuisine. It is, what it is. Sometimes decent, sometimes not so decent ‘fast’ food. LJS fill’s a niche that other places have long left in their past. I suspect, that LJS suffers from the same fate that one of our local landmark’s Bill’s Seafood(on Warwick), and now Red Lobster suffers from; a highly volatile market for the seafood that they use. This location is old. Positively, ancient in the world of fast food storefronts. However, I doubt that the business model is strong enough to support the building of a new location, so this one soldiers on. As I said, LJS serves a niche for me: Chicken planks with fish, and, hush puppies(not my real expectations of hush puppies the way my mom made them for us; a ball of slivered onion kneaded into a ball of gooderness and fried to perfection). Nah. Onion make too many hipsters butt hurt, so I have to put up with what I can find. As it is, I could(and have in the past) make a meal just off of the pup’s. We arrived early in the afternoon. The dining area was lightly attended. Our order taker, was harried, and visibly upset by the line of people waiting to have their orders taken in front of him. It took a while to get our order taken, but once it reached the kitchen, our food came out rather fast. We ordered a variety of fish and chicken planks. Hush puppies, Cole slaw and fries rounded out the orders. My chicken, fish and Cole slaw were very good. The slaw tasted fresh, and both the fish and chicken were hot to taste. The Hush Puppies were fresh out of the fryer. The fries were quite limp, either from being under cooked, or old. The dining area, was as clean, as this older than Caesar’s Ghost building could be expected. This LJS offers a Senior discount and a Military Discount to soldiers in uniform. After this was over with, I knew I had cholesterol bombed myself. One of the reasons that I only eat here about once a year(if there was a LJS on one side of my house and a Five Guys on the other, I would be dead within a week). On another day, I might get awful service. Or cold food. This time, all was right in this part of my world. Next year, I hope that it is the same. It’ll take that long for my cholesterol to come back down.

When you live on the east coast where seafood is plentiful, it surprise me cooperate seafood places survive here when all the mom and pops spots that serve fresh seafood right out of the Chesapeake Bay. Service here was very slow, I believe it was due to a scheduling conflict. We waited in line for about 25 min before receiving our to go order. I ordered a 2 piece fish, chicken plank and 3 shrimp combo meal. Meal came with 2 hush puppies and a choice of two sides. I had green beans and cole slaw. The green beans were OK for canned, the cole slaw taste like the bottom of a show. Very sour taste with no season and lacking moisture source. Now onto the seafood The shrimp was actually good, light breaded, moist and tasty. The chicken plank was dry and chewy. The fish was over battered and slightly under cooked. I tried to increase the flavor by drowning it with malt vinegar. It was Ok but I never finished the meal If it was not for the exception of having a coupon I would say this meal was not worth the price. There are plenty of seafood places in southeast Virginia that make LJS look like generic form of the product.
