I’m feeling some type of way about the reviews that records ”others” having pleasant dining experience at this eatery, & here is why. –0 is my actual rating no. I never noticed this place, until one night my Mom & I were headed next door(Chicken Shack) for 2 slabs of ribs, & I asked my Mom to go in, case the place, & grab a couple of menus. She was in there too long, so I went in to see what was taking so long, & I was upset to find her standing there looking lost & alone. I stood there observing as the wait staff was whisking past her, ignoring her on purpose(only chocolate face in the entire place). She attempted several times(being the flower child that she is; not ever aware of racism/when its obvious to me!!) to get their attention, the female waitress(looked 14 yrs of age) threw he pointer finger up at my Mom(a fabulous 60 yrs of age) yelling, «JUSTONEMOMENTMA’AM!!!’ While there were many diners, there weren’t enough business to dismiss my Mother that way. I, finally caught the attention of that female waitress who realized that my Mom & I were together & asked(in an irritated manner), ”May I help you, Ma’am?” I asked if I could have a carry-out menu to review at home, & she replied, ”Sorry, we don’t have any, sorry!” Yeah, so we left feeling unwelcomed & would never spend a dime there. December 2013, in Michigan, USA… SAD!

Well — we were sad to see them close the restaurant, but glad to see them move into a retail business for their wonderful salsas! Good luck on the venture!

This place really wasn’t bad at all, I just wouldn’t go back. The place is small. Like, it can probably only seat 10 – 15 groups of people. And it was really dark in there. They had some sort of shade covering the window and it was just too dark, but I can overlook that. It’s really not important, so on to the food. I ordered the fish tacos and my mom ordered the chicken fajitas. I really wanted the black bean veggie burger but they were all out. The fish in the tacos was really good. Crispy and not greasy at all. There was some sort of sauce, tomatoes and red lettuce(or cabbage?) on it, and overall the dish was good. It came with some sweet slaw, which was OK, but I’m not really a slaw fan. The rice was not really good. It didn’t have any salt in it, which would have made it much better. I think it had cilantro and lime in it, and I guess I’m one of those people who doesn’t like cilantro. My mom said the chicken fajitas were good, and they smelled good, but I don’t eat other meats, only seafood, so I can’t really tell you. The server was one of the owners I think, and she was really nice. I decided to order the tres leche cake to go, and I was really disappointed. I can make better tres leche cake than that. It was really dry and not sweet enough, and they sprinkled what I think was nutmeg on it. Blasphemy! Overall, it wasn’t bad, but I won’t go there again.

I was here for the first time last night. I came with a friend that was dying to take me here. He is a regular. He raved so much about the food and service I was afraid I would be disappointed… Not! Everything was perfect. I had the ribs, which were delicious and substituted the corn and bean salad for the French fries. Nice combination. The sevice was attentive without interfering with our conversation. Next time I will save room for dessert! Another plus is you can bring your own wine. They provide glasses and opener at no additional cost. If you are a beer drinker, they will keep your beer in the cooler for you. I will be back. Don’ t worry about the neighborhood. You are safe.

Fun little place. Great salsa. The best fried ice cream I’ve ever tasted. We’ve dined there several times and everything that I’ve eaten I could think of a way to take it up a notch. Good food, but with some refining touches it could be really good.

I have been wanting to check out this restaurant for quite some time now, and was finally able to on a recent Friday night with two of my girlfriends. We were famished, so as soon as we got there we ordered some chips and chose from one of the five house made salsas. As I got up to wash my hands before I ate, my friend warned me that I would have to walk through a food prep area to get to the restroom. While walking through this area, I was immediately and enthusiastically greeted by the chef who was busy making our salsa. Someone was using the restroom, so it gave me a chance to chat with two of the chefs, who were both incredibly friendly. I asked for recommendations and was given plenty, including the ribs, blackened salmon, coconut curry and tacos. I decided on the coconut curry with tofu and was very pleased with my meal. My friend had the Hombre Burger, which was so big she only ate half. We all shared the fried ice cream for dessert, and of course, it was delicious. I will definitely come back, the prices are reasonable, food was fresh and tasty, and service was perfect. It should also be noted that the live music we had that night was so good. While working our way through the chips and salsa we all stopped talking and started listening, after a few minutes, my one friend said what I think we were all thinking, which was that she was really appreciative and enjoying the music.

I’ve been going to Maria’s since it opened. Every time I’m there I’m happily surprised by some new menu item and another cute change to the interior. This place is family owned! Truly, you are treated with such kindness that you feel relaxed and completely at home(except at MY real home we don’t have food that yummy!) We totally enjoy this place and consider the owners as friends! OH, the Tres Leche(Three Milk) cake is AMAZING! We love it so much that we ordered a HUGE one and served it for our daughter’s graduation party a year ago. Please were tripping over each other to get some! YUMMY! The street parking requires nothing more than a few quarters and a tiny bit of patience. It’s usually not hard to find a space.

Being new to Hamtramck, my husband and I were looking for a nice place to have dinner. We had heard good things about Maria’s Comida and decided to visit last night. How grateful we were! Our experience at Maria’s was one of the most wonderful I’ve ever had. The service, food, and experience were all amazing. We walked in and were able to get a table right away, and it turns out we were very lucky! Shortly thereafter a group came in and had to wait. I would definitely recommend a reservation, at least for the evening on a weekend. There is also live music every Friday night, which was wonderful. The music was not too loud, the perfect style for the restaurant, and the musician was talented and fun — he even stopped by our table to ask how things were sounding! Our entire meal was incredible. We started with the chips and guacamole and the stuffed jalapeños. We are used to paying exorbitant prices for a small amount of chips and guac, so we were pleasantly surprised by the giant bowl and huge helping of chips! That could have been a meal unto itself. The chips were fresh and well seasoned, and the guacamole was absolutely perfect. The stuffed jalapeños were also incredible — their breading was magnificently light and well proportioned over the pepper, the peppers were fresh and hearty(not too spicy, either), and the cilantro and lime cream cheese was perfection — I wish I could take it home with me and put it on everything! For our main dishes, my husband chose the chorizo and eggs(comes with tortillas), and I had the vegetarian quesadilla. The chorizo in my husband’s dish was the most wonderfully spicy, complex meat I’ve had for a long time and was in perfect balance with the eggs. A simple but beautiful dish. My veggie dish was outstanding. I added the corn and black beans for 50 cents, which was a good choice. It came with sides of pico de gallo, more guacamole, and sour cream. I’m a self-proclaimed sour cream addict, but I tell you that the quesadillas were so perfect that I literally did not use a single side(my husband was happy to use them). I am also a real carnivore but this was the best vegetarian dish I’ve ever had. This is my first time eating Mexican food where the ingredients were so well cooked and well chosen that I didn’t want to slather them with extras. Maria’s Comida has ruined us for good — I’m not sure we’ll want to try another restaurant in Hamtramck! We will be back again next week, where I think we’ll try the more Asian side of their offerings. I can’t recommend this restaurant more highly. They have an extensive menu at EXTREMELY reasonable prices. As my husband said, «A five star dining experience at two star prices.» Also, we learned it is BYOB so we’ll definitely bring a bottle of wine next time. What a lovely welcome to Hamtown. What can I say? Supporting a local, family owned business with stellar food, service, music, décor, et cetera et cetera? I think I’m in love!

We have passed Maria’s Comida several times and wondered about the place. We happened to catch a segment on a local show«Under The Radar“so we finally found the courage to dine here… This place is AWESOME!!! We now dine here weekly and every time it is a struggle to decide what to order because everything we have tried so far we have LOVED and there are so many choices! The quality and taste of the food is supurb! The portions are just right and the service is always top notch! The worst part is that the desserts are equally amazing but most of the time I have to pass… way to full! Do yourself a favor and give Maria’s Comida a try if you haven’t yet. They will not disappoint!!! Top notch Asian/Mexican Fusion Family place… if you are looking for taco bell style food this is not for you!!!

The fact that this place still exists is testament to just how poor and unsophisticated Detroiters’ palates are. They serve tacos on FLOURTORTILLAS… with cheese. Yes, I’m serious. Really. And not the shredded sharp cheddar from a bag that you’re thinking of. No, this is nasty, salty chunks of American cheese. Bland, flavorless meat with American cheese and iceberg lettuce on a dry-ass flour tortilla. I’ve had Lunchables™ that were a more authentic representation of Mexican food than this worthless shithole. Rachael Fucking Ray would be insulted by the lack of authenticity here. Now, they apparently serve Asian fusion food as well. So not only are they an insult to Mexican food, but they’re also giving a big«fuck you» to Asian food as well. It’s not the best neighborhood; you’re liable to be mugged as you walk back to your car. But you know what? It serves you right for eating here. If you want better Mexican food, go to Mexicantown. Or hell, just go to Taco Bell. If you’re considering getting Asian food here, go fuck yourself.

I had lunch here for the first time, and I’m definitely a fan. Don’t let the outside fool you, because the area itself is rather ghetto lol, but the restaurant is great. The food was fresh and delicious, and it wasn’t overly expensive. I’ll go back :)

Excellent! We were in a party of three and each of us ordered something different and we all loved our choices. Creative presentation, quality ingredients, and very friendly, efficient waitstaff. The restaurant was packed by 8pm on a Saturday night. They also bottle four of their salsas and sell in the restaurant and various locations throughout Metro Detroit. I have visited the restaurant again, one week later, and had the exact same experience. By the way, you can bring your own wine and beer!

It’s such a bummer when you go to a place where you have had multiple good experiences only to go back and it takes a turn for the worse. Things that made this trip to Maria’s take a turn: Sign out front reads: «Mexican-Asian Fusion»(yikes); menu that has mexican items and asian items but a fusion of the two — not so much. Shrimp Fajitas that are not seared and shrimp the size of quarters literally, it was not a very good protion size for the money. I think that was the first time I ever finished a whole order of fajitas and didn’t have any leftovers. Chips and salsa that are $ 6!!! Steak tacos that come with only iceberg and cilantro on them. No more refried beans. Black beans and corn side that is more corn than black beans — may even be canned corn but that is unconfirmed. Tamales that are not house made. Seems like something that could be easily house made but I’ll give them the BOTD and assume there is good reason they don’t make them. Overall it was just a let down. I could have made the food so much better at home myself and much cheaper. I highly doubt that if the chef was making himself shrimp fajitas at home that he/she’d make the plate that I received.

Had lunch there today; my chicken and chorizo burrito was very tasty. The chilled green beans that came with it were crisp and tasty, but they needed to be on their own plate, not on a(very) hot plate that also held the burrito. The help was friendly, and so were the other customers… a very pleasant place, all in all. I asked for a sample of the habanero salsa. It made my mouth very happy. I’ll visit again.

I hope they prosper and live & cook forever. So. Good. The salsas– very good and the chips had a sprinkle of salt & pepper-very good, too. The guac was unbelievably tasty, made fresh to order. Service was the best I’ve had in like, 25 years. So attentive! The ginger cilantro rice was fluffy with the perfect balance of flavors. Everything is made fresh on site with thoughtfulness and creativity. The tres leches cake? OMG. My dreams tonight will be filled with that damn cake. Wow. I’m ordering one for my birthday… and I don’t even *like* cake! I’ll be forever grateful to my lunch partners for ordering 3 different desserts, I’ve never been a fan of tres leches cake and now, today, it’s in my top 10 favorite foods list! Head on over to Hamtramck. Seriously. Try something different.

I ate here with some friends that are themselves friends of the owners, but I will try to be fair and unbiased. I’ll start with the most important point: the best aspect of the restaurant is the salsa selection. Each salsa is quite flavorful with a good balance of sweetness, tanginess, and spiciness. It is the chunky type of salsa, not the soupier kind you would expect in a California taqueria. I like both, but the chunky style works better for the special mango and bean & corn salsas. I had fajitas after learning that the tamales were purchased and not made in the store — that disappointed me because the menu had me hoping for freshly made tamales. I went with the chicken fajitas. The chicken was moist and well spiced and served with the expected warm tortillas and sauteed veggies. One nice surprise was the side of ginger and cilantro rice. This was a gamble for me, because I am not a fan of food that is heavily flavored with ginger or cilantro. Fortunately, the flavors were much more subtle and enjoyable, but I(surprisingly) could have used a little more of the ginger and cilantro flavors. Unfortunately, the rice seemed slightly overcooked, so I have to ding them for that. Some of the reviews compare Maria’s with restaurants in Mexicantown. I don’t think that is a fair comparison. The Asian-fusion angle is differentiating. The food is presented with appropriate portion sizes and is prepared with less cheese, grease and oil, so it tastes lighter and fresher. You can find some good food in Mexicantown, but I have always found dishes there to be big, heavy, cheesy and greasy. There are times I am looking for that, but not for lunch on a weekday. I would go to Maria’s for lunch on a weekday. Or dinner, for that matter. Give it a shot and support a local business. And buy some of that delicious salsa.

I’ve had an opportunity to eat at Maria’s Comida a couple times now and walked away beyond satisfied both times. The mouth watering Asian ribs, smoked chorizo pasta with the sauteed almonds and chick peas add a wonderful nuttiness and rich flavor that you can’t stop eating until the big bowl is all gone. The guac and homemade salsas are delicious but what makes coming to Maria’s Comida worth it is supporting a wonderful family. I can’t wait to go back and visit, eat some delicious food and chat with my new friends.

Maria’s changed their menu to an interesting asian/tex/mex mix. They still have some classics on the menu, the jalapeño poppers, queso and guac oh and the chorizo & chicken burrito made the cut thank goodness! No more free chips and salsa. But we wanted to try out the new stuff anyway. The beau ordered the kung pao chicken wrap and I got the chile garlic shrimp with cilantro ginger rice. Both were super tasty. The rice took a minute to grow on me because honestly. I love salt. But after I got over no-saltyness it was really good! Then we split a fried ice cream with honey. Delicious. The prices are a bit more than before but it feels a bit more classy in there with photographs and nice floating flower centerpieces. Overall a great date night! ps. If anyone tries the chorizo spaghetti pleaseplease message me and tell me about it! It scares and excites me.

I’ll keep it short and sweet: While Maria’s may not be 100% «authentico», it’s still a great place for lunch! The chips and salsa were wonderful and tasted fresh, the tamales weren’t the best I’ve ever had, but by no means bad either.(They’re also served with your choice of preparation: Traditional or Tex-Mex. A nice touch!) The Mexican Pizza was very generously portioned, and the cheese enchiladas weren’t greasy(a rarity, it seems!) Another highlight were the Jalapeño Poppers(stuffed with lime-cilantro cream cheese. Delicious!) An added bonus: Most of the items offered in the entrees can be ordered ala carte– so you picky eaters out there can make your own meal for a reasonable price!) The service is always top-notch; quick and extremely friendly. All in all, it’s been a great experience every single time.

Yes, there’s more than just Polish restaurants in Hamtramck. Maria’s Comida is everything you look for in a new, independent Mexican restaurant. The food is fresh and superb, the staff is gracious, friendly and attentive and the price is more than reasonable. They have daily specials Monday through Friday and offer a dine-in punch coupon that saves you even more $$. I love their house-made salsa, Tex-Mex enchiladas, deep-fried tacos & Mexican Pizza(to name just a few). You must leave room for the out-of-this-world dessert, Pastel de Tres Leches Cake, «a luscious piece of cake soaked in three milks.» Toe-curlingly good! Nearly all of the entrées can be ordered à la carte so you can mix it up as you like. Maria’s is well lit but on the small side. If you are bringing a larger group with you, you might want to give them a call ahead. One thing it has in common with Polonia: you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom.
