An imposing structure on the southeastern end of the Dartmouth campus, Memorial Field was originally built in honor of the sons of the College who died in World War I. As a stadium, it’s pretty conventional, with the home stands featuring bleachers, newly installed VIP seats, a press/announcer box, and an ivy-covered façade, while the stands on the southern and eastern end of the field are simply bleachers. Nevertheless, the field has seen quite its share of athletic achievements over the decades, as the Dartmouth football team currently holds the most Ivy League titles and even won the national championship in 1925. It also hosted Commencement one year in the ‘90s when President Clinton was the featured speaker. The field was modernized several years ago with artificial turf and a new track that allows for year-long use. Indeed, it’s open to all from dawn to dusk on days when it isn’t being used by the football or track teams or for formal events. As an alumnus of the College, I can attest to how few things can beat cheering on the Dartmouth football team at Memorial Field on a crisp fall afternoon with the vermillion hills of New Hampshire providing a breathtaking backdrop. Now that the football team has rediscovered its winning ways, you should do so too!
