To continue venturing around the Greater Newark area as well as to step away from my office, I took a drive down to downtown Harrison, which isn’t too bad at all. Definitely a lot of business going on. Though I do my darnedest to stay away from breads, I was just craving some baked goods! Upon arrival, my eyes fell on a wheat croissant. I ordered it along with a small cup of coffee. Expecting the coffee to just be your run-of-the-mill acidic java, this coffee was DIVINE! It was rich in taste and not acidic whatsoever. Oh and the croissant? Fresh! It wasn’t warm, but it had just the right amount of softness and crisp-ness(sp?). Not sure when I would return to this spot, but if you are a Harrison resident or a Newark University Heights resident, definitely take some time out drive down Harrison avenue and get this coffee.

I am surprised with the 5 stars reviews. I’ve been there about 10 times total. The customer service was as stale as the pastries and cakes sold there. The only thing I recalled fresh was when I ordered Portuguese rolls. One time I ordered it toasted, they flattened it which made the rolls crispy and tough. That was the day I said no more Farinha bakery for me. Coffee was mediocre. I could get tastier cakes elsewhere with no less than a dollar more spent in this place.

I will comment on two of the most delectable pastries in this part of the world: natas and the chocolate swirl cake. When fresh out of the oven, the natas are what heaven must taste like. That crunch and the contrast of the smooth custard is unparalleled. The other pastries are kind of meh.

Not sure why this place received five stars but my experience has been negative each time. The coffee is horrible, the pastries are not good and poorly done. I don’t think I will ever go back here again.

This is an okay bakery, though Teixeria’s is more up to date and has a nicer feel across the river about 1 mile. Judging by the(Pastis de Natas, Egg tarts, Dan Ta’s) though both places are identical in flavor and have a nice creamy filling and both go for about $ 1. Definitely a place to grab egg tarts, but I was not impressed by some of the other options.

This place makes awesome coffee!!! They also make good breakfast sandwiches. I don’t give them 5 stars b/c sometimes they don’t have anyone to make them… :-/I am not a big pastry person but they all seem yummy.

I guess stick to what people say they do good and not something as simple as a chocolate cake. One bite and threw it in th trash. Waste of $ 18.

Great quality & even better pricing — Farinha’s is my favorite bakery in the Harrison area. Their natas(Portuguese tarts) are the BEST(also the vote from my Portuguese best friend living in Central NJ) & they’re cheap too! Only $ 0.85 per one, at these prices … I’m SO in love! Not only are their sweets & desserts good, but they also make fresh Portuguese rolls every hour(delish!!!). I love grabbing their buttered Portuguese roll(only $ 0.70!!!) on my way to work. I’m not a java kind of lady, but I did try their hot chocolate … I think it’s better if you avoid getting their hot chocolate.

This Portuguese bakery is another of my favorite joints. They make cakes, pastries, NATAS(OMG I LOVETHIS — These natas are rockin), donuts, bread, sandwiches, cupcakes, you get the picture. This is one of the few places I don’t mind drinking coffee(If you know me, that’s saying a lot. I typically despise coffee and will avoid it, despite being a college student.) Farinhas used to be the most empty bakery in Harrison — Texeira’s was really big then. My only thing is that the small bread used to be softer, but it’s still all good. But something happened and like, overnight, this place stepped up. There are no natas in Chicago and this breaks my heart. 2 natas, 1 pan con mantequilla and un café con leche = :D
