Russian rye with seeds is awesome — a half loaf is the same size as a full loaf in most bakeries/stores and is only 3.10 or so. The onion roll is perfect and delicious. However, I’d skip the Danish — it was pretty dry and lacking flavor though it might be because I went in the late afternoon. Will definitely come back again for more

I love this rye bread, reminds me of when I was growing up in Brooklyn. The only negative is that it get moldy in a few days. Not sure why it gets moldy so quickly, other breads I buy last a lot longer. I have to freeze half the loaf so I don’t wind up tossing it in the trash.

I absolutely love this place. I grew up down the street and still come back here every time that I am in town. I just flew 12 lbs of babka to Arizona to share with family. The quality, freshness, and ease of getting what I want is fantastic.

Huge selection of great-tasting breads, plus doughnuts, pastries, cakes, muffins, etc. Prices are excellent by any measure; and especially for the quality stuff they sell. If you’re near Harrison, definitely stop by. You’ll leave happy. The few negatives include that their selection isn’t consistent(for example, sometimes they’ve got tons of Napoleons, other times they got none, no matter what time you arrive; and it’s the same with certain other items too, so you may be disappointed if you’re looking for something specific). The décor is quaint(maybe too much so for some). Sometimes the store becomes overcrowded. But, again, on balance, a totally outstanding bakery, certain to please.

I don’t like the bread but love that jeyy donut with powder. The only jelly donut I can find that is worth buying bar none.

Oh I love the poppyseed lemon pound cake!!! They even have separated two slices to sale. So if you’re on diet or just want to have a try first, it’s definitely a good choice! Never miss it!

Cheap, high quality, great hours-what more can you want? The rye bread is incredible(used at the Millburn Deli to make their famous sloppy joes, sliced thin on their meat slicer), their lemon poppyseed pound cake is a great breakfast treat with coffee, and their salt sticks are a trip down memory lane.

My dad was a route driver for Pechters in the sixties and seventies when Max Ryder was still alive and owned the bakery. I grew up on Pechters bread, cakes and rolls. Their two cornerstones were their rye bread and their hard rolls. Sadly their hard rolls have morphed into a somewhat more pedestrian kaiser style roll, they no longer paint the tops with egg white before baking. The rye is still as great as ever though.

Absolutely great bread. My father worked here as a baker and my uncle still does. The fresh kaiser rolls were my favorite. I may have to stp by and pick some up soon.

Ive been eating this bread all my life, a member of our church worked for them and always brought boxes of fresh bread that Pechters donated to the church. Good to see businesses contributing to the communities they serve.

Pechter’s is a large, commercial bakery that supplies bread, rolls, and pastries to much of the NYC/NJ metro area. if you have ever eaten a pastrami sandwich in a Jewish deli or restaurant in this part of the country, it was probably served on Pechter’s rye bread. The retail store is open 7 days a week, and sells several types of rye bread, mulitgrain bread, challah, bagels, and a dozen different varieties of rolls, plus cheesecakes, danish, and other assorted pastries. I’m gonna say that the challah, dinner rolls, and cheesecake are not too good, but the rye breads are the best, and well worth coming here for. The bread shown in the photo is the most fantastic sandwich bread on the planet, Pechter’s sourdough Russian rye, sold in 4 lb. loaves for $ 5.95 each. I could live on the proverbial diet of bread and water, as long as this was it. The store opens at 6:30AM.

If you like REALSOURDOUGHRYEBREAD, this is the place for you. Stop in at the bakery retail store and pick up a 5-LB Russian Rye. They’ll slice it for you. When you get home, cut it down the center at right angles to the slices. Take ¼ of the bread for immediate consumption and freeze the other ¾ for later. You’ll love the loads of caraway seeds inside and Russian black caraway on the top. YUM! This bread completely kicks ass and nothing else compares, except for maybe Paramount Bakery in Newark. But Pechters sells directly and Paramount is available only through supermarkets.
