Double J Texas BBQ

This place was fantastic! Not only was the food sensation on but the prices and the portions were awesome! I fed my family of 4 ½ for $ 45 a large chicken plate a large for quite a large brisket plate one side and 4 cookies! It was quick and CLEAN!

First there is nothing close to cherrypoint food wise that will deliver if you don’t have any means of transportation or under crunch time. The food was outstanding great smoked bbq flavor was alright you could taste just a little what they used to ignite the coals or maybe the wood was not clean wood not overwhelming or maybe too much vinegar if they mopped the meat with it. Brisket was great ribs fell of the bone baked bean were great to i enjoyed the sweet tea. Always love the south bbq

Food is delicious! Real authentic barbeque, but definitely on the pricey side. Love that they have Shiner Bock beer

Outstanding! Ate hear on 3−3−16. The brisket was sliced fresh, it was smoky, and juicy. The meat on the ribs were tender and easy to eat off the bone. The macaroni and potato salad were the perfect sides. The BBQ sauce was smoky and sweet. I actually felt guilty for not being able to eat everything I ordered. The employees greeted me with a hello as soon as I walked in and served me quick. I will definitely come back the next time I’m in town!

The beans, Mac and cheese and brisket were all good. The ribs were terrible I couldn’t even finish one and neither could the other two people eating them. The sides were all very good but extremely small and very expensive. The deciding factor in my decision to cross this place off my list it the «Texas toast» you literally watch them take a piece of bread out of a loaf throw it in a toaster oven and that’s it… the staff was friendly and again the mac and cheese was really good but not worth a return trip.

My dad is from Texas and would always make HUGE beef ribs at home with his own BBQ sauce. So I’m definitely accustomed to (and biased) towards my fathers BBQ. However, one day my mom took me here as a surprise for lunch! Man was I impressed with the Brisket BBQ! OMG! So delicious and tender and tasty (and just enough fattiness)! The baked beans and slaw were too sweet when combined with the sweet BBQ sauce (and tea) – sugar overload! And the price for the Brisket plate seems a bit steep considering it’s proportionately composed more of sides and texas toast! I wished that they could keep the cleanliness of the place & a little sprucing of the décor! Despite this, how could you rate this place low considering there are really no restaurants in Havelock except fast food chains! I do love that Brisket! So I will fork over the money every so often.

In a town where the Q is limited to fast food variety NC style, this is a warm and welcome change. Great portion size, great value, and FAT KID APPROVED. Whenever i’m in town on business I make it a point to eat here several times in that week. The boys in the back remember me. The brisket is awesome, the ribs fall off the bone, the beans meaty and rich. What more can i say?

Loved the brisket and Mac n cheese! The meat was very tender and had a nice smokey taste to it. The service was also a 5 star experience. For the price you can’t go wrong.
So glad we found a new Bbq spot that we can enjoy when we are in town. Loved it!

As far as the BBQ goes, it was great! The meat was nice and juicy and well cooked. The sauce was excellent with the right amount of heat and sweetness. Although when it comes to the sandwich I felt like I should have gotten a nicer bread option than just the Walmart brand of bun for the price I was paying. Some type of artisan bun would have been nice. The sides were fantastic! The pepper jack Mac & cheese was good and the baked beans were excellent!

Just went here today because there are no BBQ places in Havelock. I ordered the brisket and it was very good. It was so moist and had just the right amount of fat content and just enough char from the dry run. I highly recommend this place for the brisket. Secondly, I also ordered the baked beans and the mac and cheese. Both of the sides were really good also. Another good thing about this place is the fact that they serve beer. All in all, I will be going back and I definitely recommend it.

So far I’ve tried the BBQ and brisket sandwiches and they were delicious! The meat is freshly cut and carefully prepared by friendly staff. This restaurant is another great choice instead of mass produced fast food. Would definitely recommend to other locals or visitors driving through Havelock.

Just stopped on our way from Atlantic beach back to northern Virginia. Everything we ate was delicious! Pulled pork, spicy Mac and cheese, baked beans and potato salad. This is our new favorite place to eat on our future road trips! Clean, friendly staff and a nice place to take a break from driving.
One recommendation I have… no where does it say the name of the restaurant INSIDE. There’s plenty of space on the red wall at the ordering section. Have some customers enter a contest to do a mural and pick the best artist! Award them with a free meal once a month for a year. As an owner of a small business, that’s what I would do.

Seriously? great BBQ? Texas style? Have the owner/​reviewers had BBQ in Texas? The ribs were super tender, moist, and flavorful… and the positive stops here. The meat was pale, the fat was not rendered, smokiness was minimal, there was no char at all on the exterior, which points to one thing — this ain’t BBQ. It seems like the ribs were not smoked low and slow. As I drove around the back of the building to leave, there was no smoker not stack of wood — very suspicious for a BBQ joint.

This place is amazing!!! Great BBQ!!! Counter service was awesome… great customer service!!! I would love to post a pic but I ate it all!!! Baked beans are thick and sooooo yummy! The brisket is tender and so full of flavor!!! Do not pass this place by! It is delicious!!!

Very impressed!!! The outside of the building does the food no justice, the food is amazing you have to try it out! Just walking in it smells amazing!

This has quickly become one of my husband’s and my favorite places to eat in Havelock. It’s not Carolina BBQ, which is what I feel like most of the bad complaints on here are about. So if you go with that in mind, you’ll probably like it.
1. It’s pretty affordable. You can get a bbq sandwich and a side for less than $ 5. You can get a rack of ribs for less than $ 15.
2. They have a drive thru. Drive thru BBQ! Need I say more?
3. The employees I’ve dealt with are very friendly and the service is speedy.
The flavor is really peppery, and the sauce is a good blend of spicy and sweet. We pretty much drench our meat with it. It’s definitely worth a try. We’re from California, so we didn’t have a specific idea of BBQ other than it should have meat and sauce, so if you can just acknowledge that you’re not getting Carolina bbq, and have an open mind, it will be worth it.

Some of the best Smoked BBQ I have had outside of Texas. I got the platter which included ribs, brisket, chicken, & sausage. Came with 2 sides. It came seasoned and dry. It was so good I didn’t add any sauce. The ribs were perfect — tender and the best I have ever had. I will be back!!!

I must admit that I was very doubtful walking into this restaurant.
However I am very pleasantly surprise. The food is delicious! I usually don’t eat the side of beans but I was eating up their beans. The slaw is fresh. We had brisket and ribs. Both are very well prepared. I can’t comment on the «Texas style.» All I can say is that the food is yummy!
The place is kept clean however it’s just run down because of the age of the place. A good test for how clean this place is is their bathroom. I usually don’t use public bathroom unless I have to. The female bathroom looks aged but very clean.
The owner is a very awesome man! We have a little incident that I don’t want to go into detail but he’s very cool and supportive. If I ever in Havelock again I will visit JJs.

I am amazed at the poor reviews this place is getting. I am staying down the street in a hotel and have always been a fan of Texas style BBQ and this place did not disappoint.
I had a rib dinner with two sides & Texas toast to go. These are pork spareribs that have a lot of meat on them. The baked beans were just the way I like them and very good. The cole slaw was top notch. The Texas toast was, well, Texas toast it is what it is, but I thought it was fine.
The sauce is exactly what Texas style sauce should be; slightly sweet, tomato based sauce with some secret ingredients. It was excellent and reminded me of the sauce that Dickey’s serves.
The restaurant was clean, and the staff was pleasant. I have been to plenty of hole in the wall joints that serve excellent Q, but look like they should be shut down by the board of health. As a rule this is where you find the good stuff. When I walked into JJ’s I thought they were almost too clean, but they serve excellent Q. I will definitely be back!
I paid $ 9.60 (incl TX) and thought it was very fair given the portion size and quality of the food.
I am normally a 4 star guy, but I’m giving them 5 to help their average, because I think some of these low ratings are not fair.

In a town where you best your food options are limited to KFC and McDonalds this was a plesent surprise. It really isn’t much to look at but the BBQ is quite good. I had a beef brisket sandwich and it was excellent.
Options are limited, chicken or beef brisket and they only make certain quantities each day and once sold out they are done. So go early if you want some.
