Nice inventory. Rude staff. I was in town with my sister and we were going to buy a painting for our father but the sales people treated us disrespectfully like we were bothering them.

This is a beautiful little store where you can find exotic woods crafted into useful chairs and rocking chairs, or handmade desks. Even the accessories are often one of a kind. Expensive and beautiful, functional lamps and tables you’ll enjoy for a lifetime. High quality and made by experienced artisans who have devoted their lives to fine craftsmanship, hence the perfect name: Dovetail. Even though we were visiting and only looking, we were treated as welcome guests. I liked that.

We visited Dovetail this weekend merely to gawk at the beautiful woodworking pieces, as my companion is a fine woodworker as well. The two ladies who staff the boutique furniture and handcrafted gift store are not only knowledgeable but very friendly. Often times sales people in Healdsburg can be snooty and aloof to shoppers who do not express an immediate interest in purchases. These ladies were far from that. We chatted about the artists and the craftsmanship, they spent several minutes discussing each piece we commented on and were eager to engage us in conversation about the artistry. We greatly appreciated their warmth and friendliness. Although we did not purchase anything we felt like we were welcome back any time.

The Dovetail gallery is a pretty unique gallery with a variety of different mediums. I live in the Petaluma area and anytime I am in Healdsburg I make it a point to stop in and see what is new. They have some beautiful wood pieces and some glass jellyfish that look exactly like a jellyfish floating in water. One of the best galleries in the north bay for sure.

They have some really nice wood pieces made by craftsmen. I picked up a wood box with maple birdseye and a dark wood trim for our friend’s upcoming birthday. They no longer let you sit in the beautifully handmade rocking chair with long upcurved rocking legs. It’s valued in the thousands, but the chair is really lovely, solid wood. The redwood burl bowls are so exquisite, hollowed out from a solid piece of wood and polished and light as a feather. There are clocks, jewelery pieces, wooden lamps, chests, pens, inlaid wall hangings.(this panda one was adorable). I could stay in there all day looking at their stuff and caress the shiny and smooth wood pieces. If you appreciate good workmanship, this place is a must to visit when in Healdsburg.

I almost exclusively buy handmade furniture, something I got addicted to from learning how to make furniture in high school(and making enough to afford it!). Dovetail is run by people who know their stuff and love craftspeople. The furniture is exquisite and the accessories are fun and unique. I always go visit the store when I’m in Healdsburg.

Fantastic selection of wood furniture and other sorts of home accessories. It’s not inexpensive, but you can see and feel the craftsmanship in each piece. I looked at some great indoor/outdoor folding chairs, made out of wine barrels, for instance, and in retrospect I should have bought them. They also have some cool hand-carved chess and backgammon sets, perfect to get as a gift. For yourself, if you’re me.
