The funnel cake was extremely tasty. Exactly what you would expect from a place called Granny’s. The guy who made it wasn’t super friendly but that wasn’t a huge downside. Fast funnel cakes and nice indoor and outdoor seating.

Sometimes you just gotta, and based on my reviews for the other 3 eateries I visited in Helen, yesterday was that day for me. Funnel cake with powdered sugar and strawberries topped of a day of food and beer in this beautiful town. Shop was clean, busy and staff was friendly. Recommended.

Mmm, funnel cakes… This seemingly simple dessert consists of deep-fried batter topped with powdered sugar and/or your choice of various toppings. Apparently, it takes a special recipe to make the batter taste just right and someone with skills to cook the funnel cake to perfection. The folks at Granny’s Famous Funnel Cake Haus(House) in Helen, Georgia are obviously doing something right. Boasting the title of «The Oldest Funnel Cake Shop in Helen,» I’m not sure exactly how old it is, but I do know that this little shop always seems to be busy. My family and I make it a point to stop here whenever we’re visiting Helen, and that’s only about once or twice a year. Of course, funnel cakes are Granny’s specialty, so that’s what my family always gets when we’re here. At $ 4.99 for a simple, 8-inch diameter funnel cake with either powdered or cinnamon sugar, it’s a deal compared to Six Flags Over GA’s $ 6.99 basic funnel cake. If you want to add apple, cherry, or strawberry toppings, it’ll cost you an extra $ 2($ 6.99 each). A scoop of ice cream will cost an additional $ 2.57, whipped cream costs $ 1, and chocolate topping costs a whopping $ 1.50. Not sure why these toppings cost so much more, but that’s the main reason why I like to stick with the basic funnel cake with powdered sugar. * Funnel Cake w/Powdered Sugar($ 4.99) — In my opinion, the perfect funnel cake would be slightly crispy on the outside yet still chewy on the inside, but not too doughy. You definitely don’t want the funnel cake to be crunchy all the way through. I’ve never made one myself, but I would imagine it’s a bit of a challenge to deep fry the batter exactly that way. However, Granny’s does a pretty good job. During my most recent visit, I honestly did think that the inside was a little less cooked than I would have liked. Additionally, the powdered sugar was kind of clumpy. Nevertheless, I will continue to come back because they have generally been consistent with these tasty deep-fried desserts. Granny’s offers other sweets and treats along with their famous funnel cakes. Per their store signage, they offer strudels and ice cream as well as shaved ice, slushies, jumbo pretzels, and even deep-fried Oreos($ 4.95 for six), among other things. I’ve never tried anything other than the funnel cake, but I did have a scoop of vanilla ice cream with it once. Although a it’s a pricier topping, it’s delicious and I recommend trying the funnel cake with ice cream if you’ve never had it before. Overall, Granny’s Famous Funnel Cake Haus gets 4 stars for their hot, fresh, and tasty funnel cakes. The employees aren’t the friendliest, but I guess this is somewhat understandable as they stay pretty busy all day. For those who want to make their own funnel cakes at home but don’t want to figure out the best way to make the batter, they sell bags of the mix. My family and I will continue our tradition of pigging out on Granny’s funnel cakes and come every time we visit Helen. If only it was closer to Atlanta… I want one now. [Review 310 of 366]
