I brought my vintage bicycle frame in for new chrome and polishing. The polishing was outstanding — the stem, crankset, handle bars and seat post all have a mirror finish. However, I have to redo almost all the chroming. I was assured they could work around the head badge that was riveted on the head tube. If they had absolutely insisted I remove it I would have found a way to do it. When I came to pick up the frame they had chromed over the vintage, brass hand-painted head badge. I removed it(took 3 minutes-why couldn’t they have done it?) and while they did re-plate the badge for me(gold, not brass — they don’t do brass) the hand painting of the detail is a major pain. If I can restore it at all it will take a lot of time and I may have to hire a high-end detail painter. BTW, I was asked to kick in a case of beer for the gold plating — funny, it was their fault but what the heck. The chrome on the drive side chain stay was not done far enough to match the former chrome line. I have to do it again. The fork crown was badly pitted, and to their credit they got a great deal of the pits out but insisted that they could do no more as they feared they would damage the crown. I am sending it out to a bicycle frame specialist who will, while charging me an arm and a leg, redo the entire fork, using silver/bronze fillers and copper under plating. He said it is very tough but can be done. 2 stars because the polishing was excellent. Other than that — not happy at all.
