Really disappointing experience here through my pregnancy and the birth of my first son(who is almost two, now). I’ve debated reviewing the doctors for quite some time, but my experience is such a common one nationwide that I feel I owe it to fellow pregnant women out there to warn you that you will not be cared for by these doctors. Over 12 months of visits, I was only able to see my doctor two times. The office assures you that you should accept this as it is very likely that your doctor will not deliver you. The end result is an inability to form any sort of productive relationship with any of the doctors. You become a number in a long line of numbers and there is a distinct feeling that your interests, preferences and plans for your birth are not being considered in the least. Because this was my first pregnancy, I was naïve. I didn’t know to demand more. It’s a big regret. Of course, the natural conclusion is that as my due date came and went(I was five days past due at my final visit), something all too common happened. At not even a week late, Dr. H examined me and used fear to force me into a c-section, telling me that my child was oversized and needed to come out NOW. He even took me to get an ultrasound to prove it. What I didn’t know then, but do now, is that late-term ultrasounds are NOTORIOUSLY bad at predicting birth weight. In fact, according to research: «Fewer than 8 percent of babies born in the United States meet the medical definition of a large baby. But exaggerated estimates of fetal birth weight may be playing a role in the nation’s high cesarean section rates, Dr. Declercq said. In the United States, nearly one in three babies are born by C-section.»(Read more on the New York Times site) But a doctor should know these statistics, right? I expect that the doctors at this office care very little for facts like these, however, and are more interested in risking their patients’ health, breastfeeding relationships and recovery just to avoid the potential of a big baby as well as cash in on the high price of performing a c-section. It’s sickening. The rest was text book from there: I was forced(after much lobbying on my side to at least attempt induction) into an induction not even 5 days past due. I was given a stern talk about my baby being oversized and at risk despite lack of genuine science to back this up. My water was broken without my consent and though I reached 9 cm dilated in just 24 hours, I was scared into a 9 p.m. C-section(presumably so that my doctor wouldn’t have to work a late night). The icing on the cake: after 24 hours of fluids, which is known to enhance birth weight in babies born of a c-section, my son was just 8 lbs. 8 ounces. Not overweight ATALL. Don’t trust your body, nor your babies to these people. You’re just a paycheck here. If all that wasn’t enough to convince you: When I came in for my first post-partum visit, my doctor actually brought his laptop into the room during a soccer game he wanted to watch(the FIFA World Cup was going on at this time) and MADEMEWAIT as he watched the game for ten minutes in the room!
