Great gelato, excellent customer service. Needs to be in a better location though, more people need to know about this place!

A fantastic hole in the wall with super delicious gelato and macaroons. The staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful. Always take the owner’s recommendations when it comes to the gelato. He really knows his gelato. The flavors are amazing and the texture is super smooth. As for the macaroons, they carry seasonal flavors in addition to their standard offerings, so it’s always worth stopping in to see what’s new. The prices are extremely reasonable too. My favorite flavor so far has been the green tea, although I do really like the pistachio as well.

We drove all the way from Fairfax(which is 20 minutes away) to come visit this place. We drove all the way to find them closed, on a Saturday, and it not being a holiday. We looked on the website before we got there and there was NOMENTION of it being closed. A waste of gas and a total disappointment. What a shame, because I loved everything they seemed to offer.

I am so glad a friend of mine introduced me to Scoop of The Hill. It’s nestled in a rather isolated part of Herndon, just west of the Reston border amidst a few other restaurants and a Dunkin’ Donuts. When we arrived just the owner was working there as his staff was out sick that day. Regardless he went out of his way to make our visit enjoyable and memorable. I ordered the ham and cheese crêpe for lunch. It was good, but not the best I’ve had. Stuffed with plenty of swiss cheese and pieces of ham and encased in a thin pancake. It was quite filling and actually a nice change of pace from my usual Herndon area lunch spots. After lunch I ordered a shot of espresso, which of course is the customary European thing to do. I also ordered a pumpkin macaroon to take home with me. As I waited for my espresso, the owner offered to let us try some of his gelato, which it was so good, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t considered getting some! He let me try at least 7 or 8 different flavors and told me that the absolute best thing to do is to add a scoop of cookies and cream gelato to my espresso and eat it with a spoon. I am not one to mix coffee and ice cream, but he was so convincing that I went ahead and tried it. I must say the first few bites were delicious with the creaminess of the espresso crema beautifully complimenting the vanilla and chocolate of the gelato. I ate it slowly and tried to savor it. However, I think such a dessert must be consumed immediately because after the gelato melted it was not nearly as good. That said, it was a wonderful treat and I am glad to have been introduced to it. Not sure I would get it again, but it may be just the thing for you gelato and espresso fans out there. Overall I am quite the fan of Scoop of The Hill and despite the fact that my review did not mention the macaroons, I was delighted by how good the pumpkin macaroon was. Now that I think about it, I will definitely have to go back and try more macaroon flavors as it was the best macaroon I have had in a loooong while.

I’m so pleased to find a place with good macarons close to home. And for the price of $ 1.50 per macaron, it doesn’t get any better. They have all the classic flavors, such as pistachio, red velvet, green tea, espresso, and passion fruit. I don’t know how they can make a profit selling it at that price, along with the fine quality of the cookies. The macarons are good, but I think the star is the gelato. I like to get the pint with a combination of flavors and take it home. It will last me a good few days. You can sample all the flavors and combine them for newer flavors. My favorite will always be straciatella aroma pana, which is a milk-based ice cream topped with chocolate shavings. I also love the lemon, strawberry, hazelnut, vanilla, and pistachio. It’s quality desserts at a great price, along with great customer service. That’s why this place deserves five stars!

Just went here and really liked it!!! Id give it five stars but the location is horrible, and its hard to understand what they were trying to do with the inside of the establishment. Its kind of part takeout, part café maybe? part sit down? Who knows… but i couldn’t locate silverware, but every coffeetable had napkins. On to the food. I had a smoked turkey, avacado and swiss crêpe that was AMAZING. Like it was reminiscent of the crepes i’m used to from the EU. Very very very good. I would have tried a sweet crêpe as well but i wanted to save room for… Afagado(espresso with gelato): VERY good. I usually go to Pitango Gelato in RTC, but this is closer and way more price friendly(was it 3 $? way less than pitango!) Pitango’s coffee is better, but this was certainly a closer runner up!!! Worth it! I had it with the nutella gelato + jamaican chocolate gelato. Amazing. Macaroons — 6 of them for $ 10 and they were very good! Not the best i’ve ever had but for the price, they were excellent. I had the cassis(black currant), coffee, pumpkin, dulce de leche, salted caramel, and the straciatella nutella one. All of them except for the straciatella nutella one were amazing. That one(straciatella nutella) was NOT good. The filling was a flop, and the cookie part was rock hard. Maybe the batch was bad? Anyway. This is a gem in the making… they need to update the facility, maybe relocate but continue making crepes and macaroons and gelato. Owner is really in love with what he does and him and his son, i’m assuming were both extremely thankful for our business and super kind. I will be back!

So glad we discovered this place! We had savory and sweet crepes. The owner, Mike, gave us a sample of every gelato. His passion for his food was infectious. We also ordered a large gelato as a result and it was delicious. We look forward to being regulars here.

Went there on Friday afternoon with my kids and tried 3 kinds of Crepes(one savory crêpe and two sweet crepes). All turned out wonderful! End up eating one more than planned. High end food with very reasonable price. When we were eating there, the owner played soft music for us. Felt like we all traveled to another county. The whole dining experience was wonderful! We will go back soon.

This was my first visit! I came in for breakfast and saw that they were packing some things away… but they wasted no time getting out what they needed. I got the nutella/banana crepes and a cup of coffee. I was amazed to see a cooking setup that was right in front of the menu. It was a real delight actually watching my food being made. While I waited, I sampled some of the gelato to satisfy an odd craving I had. The crêpe maker/gelato specialist, knowing that it was my first time, generously offered to put some scoops of gelato into my coffee at no additional charge! Once I got my crêpe, I dug in and was hit by some amazing flavors from the banana and nutella… such a simple crêpe, but done so well. The addition of the coffee/gelato mix was unforgettable! This wasn’t no ordinary«coffee pot» coffee, but a legitimate espresso machine coffee… mixed with real(tiramisu and chocolate) gelato! I savored some of the bites before it fully dissolved into the coffee, but I found myself wanting a little more, so I got some gelato to go! Definitely worth the price, compared to other places that sell gelato! This place NEEDS more customers! I’m definitely telling my friends!

I was in the area eating some dinner for my birthday and wanted macaroons for dessert. After eating in Reston Town Center, we barely made it to this place before they closed. It is definitely a hole-in-the-wall kind of place. It has an eclectic arrangement of furniture on the inside. Definitely not a place you would bring someone on a date, but a nice place to pick up. Since aesthetics and interior design shouldn’t be the rating of the food, I’ll move on. I ordered 1 ½ dozen macaroons from here, I think one of each flavor. The macaroons are a tad on the small size, but they are full of flavor. All of the macaroons are delicious, but my favorite might have to be the pistachio and red velvet. In addition to the interior, the packaging for the macaroons was very poor. We ordered a dozen and a half and they put them into a pie case and gave it to us. Not a huge deal, but they moved around and were smooshed as they hit each other.

This place is a bit hole in the wall and maybe not aesthetically pleasing, but that aside, everything these people make is GOLD. After picking up a some macaroons, the guy who I’d presume was the owner had me try every single gelato flavor that they carried– he even mixed a few gelato flavors together on the sample spoon to create a mini-smoothie of euphoria… he even cut a few of the macaroons in half and split them with me–(sunflower flavor was BOMB). I’ll be returning with coworkers for some after-lunch gelato or a dessert crêpe… looking forward to it!

They make crepes, French macarons and gelato! I got lucky and found this place. It’s hidden and it’s small inside but don’t let that fool you! First, their crepes are good! They make the thin crepes in front of you. I’ve tried strawberries, banana and Nutella crepes. Strawberries and bananas cut fresh into the crepes spread with Nutella. Also tried the ham, egg and cheese crepes. So so satisfying! I think their prices are about average. $ 5-$ 8 for crepes. Macarons are pretty good too but I recommend getting their gelato! It’s all homemade and with all fresh ingredients! My favorite fig gelato! Tastes so yummy and refreshing! The service is excellent! So friendly and the owner is always there to offer you samples and you get to try basically everything… and you’ll want to get everything!

I love the rich creamy flavor of this gelato joint. This place doesn’t have a specially themed décor or a trendy theme, but rather focuses on its core business — the gelato. In my opinion, it is refreshing to see a local business just focuses on its core business and does not make the décor a priority. The shop had about 8 – 10 gelato flavors and let you taste them all. Honestly I was having a lot of trouble deciding, but then I tasted the hazelnut flavor and the rest of the flavors no longer interested me as much. If you live in NOVA and want a true taste of gelato check this place out. It is simply stated with the equipment for its core business — gelato, crepes, and macrons, taking center stage at this establishment.

Very tasty macarons! Texture is a little dense, but the explosive flavors beat some of those other monotonously sweet macarons out of the water. Flavors are robust and true to their name: Lime & Ginger, Passion Fruit, Pumpkin, Cassis, Green Tea, SPECUTELLA. The Specutella macaron, assuming it’s a mix between Cookie Butter and Nutella is amazzinggg and one of their signature flavors. $ 9 for 6 macarons; $ 18 for a dozen — what a steal! The small shop looks a bit grim from the outside, but it’s quite a different story on the inside. The owner and staff are very friendly and quick to offer samples of their macarons. Their small family-owned business focuses on catering — you can order a macaron tree or pyramid, and they even do special orders for macaron gelato sandwiches!

I’m going to go ahead and supply a generous 4 stars for my first visit to this quaint and charming shop, which is well worth the find. If you know where the funky Dunkin’ Donuts is on Elden St. right in the shadows of the Ffx County Pkwy(286) on-ramp, then you’re in the right shopping center/light industrial park. Scoop of the Hill is in a little standalone building kind of behind DDs and the China King, across from Diva Fit and nearby the Amphora Bakery. You can park anywhere you like in the shopping center. I believe the shop is primarily a special-order kind of place for custom gelato and pastry orders, but they have a cute little area inside where you can plainly see their 12 or so homemade small batch gelatos and sorbettos, plus a case displaying their 9 or so varieties of homemade macarons, plus a little tower with other random French pastries, such as Madeleines and such. There’s no seating inside or outside, but if it’s a nice day, you can just stroll around the little shopping center and discover other completely random and Bookmark-worthy local-yocal spots, such as Taste of the World, Sid’s, NUsed, etc. The owner was onsite and the only one there on a Sunday. He was a nice guy, and very passionate about their small-batch homemade gelato and sorbetto flavors. He insisted I try the basil(which he mixed with strawberry — yum), the mango, and the caramel. They have three sizes of gelato cups, or you can get a pint, quart, or entire pan to go. I opted for a small, which he allowed me to fill with 3 different flavors — awesome! I chose the coconut, the mango, and the classic straciatella. My favorite was the coconut, with its large coconut flakes throughout. It held together well on a 75-degree day. The mango was also good and very fresh-tasting. I liked the straciatella, but it was a little melty and drippy. I couldn’t resist trying the macarons, so I chose a half-dozen for my mother-in-law for $ 9, and he threw one extra in for me at no charge, so I chose the cassis flavor — so French of me! I really enjoyed the macaron. It had a good mouthfeel and the filling was neither too sticky nor too sweet, and the macaron shell held together well, even when dipped in gelato! :P My total for the gelato was just under $ 4, and the half-dozen macarons were $ 9. The pricing and quality of the gelato were definitely on-par with the nearest gelato place down the road in busy, chaotic Reston Town Center, Pitango. Personally, I’d prefer to support this local up-and-comer over Pitango; there’s also far less of a parking struggle. Granted, Scoop of the Hill doesn’t serve espresso or have seating, but if it’s just nice gelato/sorbetto/macaron/pastries you’re looking for, and you like a small local merchant, give Scoop a try!
