I grew up w/Hershey Chocolate. I like their milk chocolate more out of nostalgia than anything else. Their darkest chocolate(Symphony) is waxy and not particularly good. All it took was one taste and that was enough. I was dismayed when they bought our local chocolatiers a few years ago, Scharffen Berger and Joseph Schmidt, but the quality remained the same, so I could live w/it. Then there was the announcement in the Chronicle today that the local factories would be closed and the chocolates would be manufactured in Pennsylvania. That pisses me off in the same way that the purchase and subsequent killing of YardBirds by Home Depot did. I don’t like big national companies buying up local treasures only to dismantle them. Don’t even get me started on Bank of America, which used to be a local, honorable bank instead of the ravening monster it now is. One star for Hershey!

This is my 200Th review and I have been reviewing Ice cream, chocolate and American entrepreneurs, so I took a bubble bath, poured myself a nice glass of a good California Chardonnay and chose The Hershey Company. The center of Pennsylvania and America’s largest producer of chocolate and sugar confections. Amazed to be first, other than the park, factory, etc. etc. … Hershey’s now have stores in Times Square, NYC and Chicago, IL. The town of Hershey, in Hershey, Pa. have lamp posts that look like Hershey kisses, how precious is that? They also, have the famous Hersheypark, 110 acres where you can enjoy chocolate along with 10 different roller coasters, water rides, kiddie rides and arcade amusements, along with a dolphin show, plus other trained sea critters. They also boast a «Bandstand» of visiting performing artists. Also home to professional Ice skating, hockey, other sports, family entertainment and theater Zooamerica is home to over 200 species of animals, including a petting zoo. Great for children, but everything is Golfing in Hershey is a championship 36 holes! Hershey is the golf capital of Pennsylvania. The Hershey Factory is on this same property as the amusement park(Hersheypark) and is a unique ride displaying how the cocoa bean is grown, processed and developed into the cocoa powder they sell as is or turned into a chocolate liquor and make our wonderful chocolate confections. You can smell the chocolate and you will not be disappointed, on departure they thank you with a fresh Hershey’s chocolate bar. Then you enter Chocolate World, which is an atrium of shops. Food, coffee, t-shirts and many other souvenirs and most of all, a very large chocolate candy store, where you can buy all their famous brands, some in miniatures and some are giants. Also made from this famous Hershey’s Chocolate liquor is the great brand of Hershey’s premium Ice cream. It is as good as chocolate Ice cream gets. Many other flavors are available. Then there is the Hershey Lodge and restaurant, which is well known and holds not only a renowned chef, but the Spa is becoming more and more sought after and it’s a chocolate spa of course. Then there is the Hershey Museum, a tribute to Milton Hershey, the founder of Hershey chocolate and all that it stands for. Hershey is not just the name of America’s favorite candy bar. It’s also the name of the man who invented it as well as the town where they make it. Have you had your Hershey’s today?
