This Amtrak station is located in downtown High Point. The original train depot was built in 1907, then restored in 2003 to what appears like its original look and feel. It’s a nice tribute to yesteryear, done very well, see photos here. Besides the three Amtrak trains that serve it, a connection to Winston-Salem is provided by a Thruway Connector which is a PART Express bus to/from the Clark Campbell Transportation Center in downtown W-S. I like this little depot, for keeping the charm of the old train station and still being modern enough to serve today’s public. The depot itself has always appeared well maintained and clean. The desk staff has been nice here in my encounters, making necessary announcements and attending to passengers well. There is usually not a large staff on duty, one person mainly, so the desk must be shut down while the attendant goes to help with passengers on the trains. Hopefully the volume will let them add one more person to help out, that would be great. Also, to get to the train platform area, you must go down a pretty steep set of steps from the depot area… not optimal if you have big luggage, children, or other people that need help in tow. There is an elevator though that helps with these sort of passenger needs, but a ramp instead of the steps would be a great asset. The connecting PART Express bus service to/from Winston-Salem has been good. Only one time, when the Amtrak train was very late to the depot, the bus did leave already(must follow a schedule?) stranding fellow passengers and me in one instance. But for the most part, the bus has been there even earlier than scheduled and ran quickly to its destination. Bottom line: I like the High Point station for the most part, with some additions and considerations I think it could move up to 5 star status.
