Highland Lakes was my home from the time I was 5 years old until I moved out of state at age 18. The General Store, or the G.S., as our family affectionately called it, was always a frequent stop for us. Their hardware section became very familiar to me as my dad brought me along for the ride whenever he needed something for those weekend projects he was always tackling. He used to treat me to an ice cream from the freezer sometimes. I don’t think we would have survived some winters without milk and bread and other staples from the G.S. Their deli always had a great selection and the sandwiches they made were delicious. I always wanted a bologna sandwich with spicy mustard on a poppy seed kaiser. Their kaisers were the best I’ve ever haf. Still my favorite sandwich today. The Italian ice shop is something you should not miss if you stop in here during the summer. I remember the original owner driving around to the beaches selling Italian ices in a used ice cream truck. Chocolate Mousse and Watermelon were my summertime staples. Bubblegum and Cotton Candy are also great flavors. Whenever my husband and I go back to visit Highland Lakes we always go to get Italian ices at the G.S. We were devastated this past May when we were in town for my brother’s wedding and they hadn’t opened yet. If we could buy a franchise we would be all over it! They also have a wonderful board at the front of the store for bulletins, announcements and classifieds. If you are a Highland Lakes resident and you aren’t familiar with the General Store, what’s your problem? ;) And if you ever pass through be sure to run in for a sandwich and Italian ice. You won’t be sorry!

Everything you need to avoid having to leave Highland Lakes. Has food, a modest amount of groceries and home essentials, liquor, beer and hardware. Try and stump Ron in the Hardware section. He has one of everything you might need(2 of an item might take till next tuesday) Need a loaf of bread, 6 pack of beer, a vacuum cleaner bag, and some nails? No problem. Don’t leave the hill and miss out on a day of summer. Great family owned local business. Keep your money in your local community.
