This is one of the best parks on the North Shore and one of the largest! It has soooo much to offer not just to kids but, adults are included in the activities. There is a 1.7 mile paved walking path which you can cross over into Sleepy Hollow. Round trip = 3.4 miles. It takes about 1 hour to complete the 3.4 miles, a fairly decent workout. In November, 2015 the Highland Park Park District replaced the old playground equipment with all brand new equipment! If you have little ones, they’ll enjoy the new swings, slides and monkey bars all nicely sheltered under a canopy of trees. The Park District spent extra $$ and replaced the old dirt and wood chips with artificial turf. No more muddy shoes in the car ;). In addition to the playground and walking path, the park has soccer fields, baseball diamonds, covered picnic facilities, indoor restrooms, tennis courts, indoor ice rink and during the winter a sledding hill. Birthday parties are welcome at the ice rink. Skating lessons are provided year round. The ice rink is home to the renowned Falcon Hockey Association. Look online for their tryout schedule. Don’t forget to bring your 4 legged friends, the park is dog friendly and has many stations for doggy bags and trash cans. Bikes and skates welcome!

The Hill: What a great place on a winter day. The hill at the park is not too big and not too small, but depending on your children’s ages it’s gigantic. The east side of the hill is steeper than the west. The hill also gets a lot of ice and that’s a good thing when your kids want their sleds to fly down the hill. Tip to all that go, the staircase on the east side of the hill is shorter and faster to get up the hill than the west. There are not that many sledding hills around and this one is great. My kids love going and we’ve made it a winter tradition as did many other families in Highland Park. It is loads of fun but be ready to get cold. Disk Golf: the park has a great 9 basket disk golf course. The course runs along the road that enters the park and has a number of challenges including places that if the disk goes in its not coming out! Each hole has a great tee off box to define the starting point and many have an overview of the hole. If you’re a person that likes disk golf your going to love this place! Fishing Hole: what can I say, it’s not deep sea fishing, you’re not going to catch pike, walleye or bass but I hope you know that when you go there! I love the fishing pond and my two girls and I go every summer. For me it’s a great place to be with my kids. My tip is look for the big snapping turtles but don’t try to touch them!

Fly at your own risk and be prepared to do a lot of laughing with friends! It’s a rarity, because there’s not a lot of free fun anymore, but here you can play for hours without paying a dime. Though we were cold after an hour of watching the boys go up and down the hill, we didn’t want to leave. There’s no warming house here to watch your kiddos, but the modern day parents sit in their cars with a hot cup of coffee and chat on phones, go on their iPads and wait at the bottom of the hill. Next time we hope to have one of those special spots ;-) Here’s the deal. There’s no supervisor on duty and very few rules. There is a sign that says no snowboarding and no metal sleds, but that’s about it. Some of the kids were slipping going up the side stairs because they aren’t deiced, but that didn’t stop those determined to make it to the top of the hill. Good old fashioned free fun!
