Peter White built a pair of 26″ wheels for me — the front with a SON hub, the rear with Phil Wood. He spec’d the wheels based on my weight, touring load and weight distribution. I put them on a Surly LHT and I’m totally satisfied with the fit, finish and performance. These are clearly superior wheels, so much so that I ordered two more sets for my other bikes. They are that good!

Update to my original review 6 months ago. I’ve ridden the front wheel around 1,000+ miles to and from work and on other rides and the wheel spins as true as new. Not even the faintest wobble. The lights are also working just great.

Update. PWC stocks a lot of winter tires, and I use studs for commuting during this time. I recently had a problem with slow leaks developing, and eventually LBS figured out that one of the studs’d eroded through the casing(obviously they, and I had looked several times without finding it before). Called Peter(from whom I’ve bought such tires) and he was very chatty and said that yes, if you think about it, you have a carbide stud in comparatively soft rubber, which over time ages… you can connect the dots. Peter gets grief for having opinions, but my take on the guy is that this is what happens: he spends a lot of time thinking about the products he sells and forms pretty clear ideas about them and he’s actually NOT«the customer is always right,» because then he has to deal with the returns. I’ve never had him be anything but professional, he stocks things that are useful and hard to find elsewhere, and in my experience has been pretty easy to work with.
