Quaint coffee shop convenient to downtown [HISTORIC] Hillsborough. They’ll meet your coffee needs, serving up a mean iced americano with as many shots of espresso as your day calls for(«They go down smooth» –Steve A.). They’re brewing up some delicious coffee along with a full list of specialty drinks and teas. If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, they’ve got you covered! Grab a seat if they’re not all taken and enjoy the free wifi(password: espresso1). I’m sure a group of retired folk meets here on a certain weekdays, they love to sit and chat, hopefully you’ll get a seat and be able to listen to their interesting conversations. Overall, this is your HOT spot for a pick-me-up and possibly a place to rest your bum, although BEWARNED, it’s a tiny spot inside, so you might be forced to enjoy the weather on the little patio seats in front of the shop. Not much to look at from the outside, but the coffee speaks for itself and the staff give off that homey-town feel at this local hole in the wall joint.

Great coffee + friendly service = great stop. I think we were the only strangers in the shop. Impressive since the line stretched 10 back from the register(but it moved quickly). They have a huge selection of freshly roasted beans and parking in the back.

I usually grab a plain or a vanilla latte from here. Always perfect! Both taste and temperature & the froth is artistically swirled into a feather or heart. Great place to meet up with a friend too! #lovemesomecupofjoe #simplepleasures

Upon returning to Hillsborough after spending several years in DC, one of the first things I had to do was find a local coffee shop. I found CaJ — and haven’t left since. It’s the quintessential hometown coffee shop — filled with all the local chatter you could want(or not), an excellent selection of rotating beans for us mainly-drip drinkers, and an owner with a Midas touch for baking some seriously addictive creations. Try the rice krispie treats at your own peril… Both parking and seating can get limited during peak hours, but service is always quick if you need to take one to go. If you spend any time in this area and drink coffee, you really should check these guys out.

This place is my regular weekend coffee spot. The staff has always been very friendly and accommodating, and it’s the type of place you always see the same smiling faces — very local, small-town feel. The drinks are great. I always order off the specials chalkboard since they’re always experimenting. If you’re not in the coffee mood, they mix a great Italian soda also. If you want pies or other baked goods, get there earlier rather than later. They keep their Facebook page updated with new baked good selections.

As we’ve come to love Hillsborough since we moved here a year ago, Cup A Joe has become an integral part of why we love this town. We’re floored that we have our own local cute little coffee shop that knows how to do it right. Not only that, but the owners and workers are all super friendly. We hope this place never leaves! It’s a super comfort when running to the post office to deliver orders or passing through town to drop off library books. Our personal recommendations: the espresso is superb, and so are the traditional espresso-based drinks(lattes, cappuccinos, etc.) If you’re going for a fancier coffee drink, try the sea salt caramel latte. As we said before, the chai is also amazing. For snacks, try the(homemade) salted browned butter rice crispy treats!

Exactly what I’d want in a chill, neighborhoody coffee shop. A few highlights: – Seems underdiscovered. Meaning it hasn’t been crowded any of the handful of times I’ve been in over the past couple years, despite its small size. – Joe Van Gogh coffee(great!), with similar(inexpensive, in my view) prices. – Nice owner, who’s currently working the bar. – Tasty treats: croissants(including ham & cheese and spinach & cheese) from Weaver St. Market, mostly homemade/wife-made pies and cakes(apple & cheddar pie or cannoli cake, anyone? … !!!), probably other things that I haven’t noticed because I got distracted by those things. – It’s a place for chatting and reading and relaxing, not overtaken by computer users. I’m obviously screwing that all up by pecking at my laptop for this review, but I’m going back to my preferred luddite ways shortly — and I’m glad that there are still retreats like this for my pen-and-paper soul.

The only place worth getting coffee in Hillsborough, very friendly staff. Get there early because there is not much seating.

Good coffee, super friendly staff, and a great location in downtown historic Hillsborough, but the place is simply too small! If not for this last fact, I would definitely add another star. I know some say that size isn’t everything, but I do think it counts when it comes to a coffee shop. Don’t get me wrong, though – Cup A Joe uses what it has well. There is a great friendly vibe within this shop, and I think it is pretty obvious that the baristas are the strongest reason behind this as they are pretty darn awesome. Drinks are prepared well, there’s a decent selection of baked goods, and weekly fresh roasted coffee is available for purchase. Plus there are a few tables and seats outside for sitting and taking part in some people watching(probably not to the degree offered by Franklin St. or 9th St.) on a nice day. Don’t be offended, Cup A Joe, but I do wish you had a little more size going for you.

This coffee shop knows how to do it right. Staff is knowledgeable, and passionate about coffee. I like Starbucks because I can literally go around the world and get consistent coffee, but when I’m in Hillsborough or Raleigh, I’m heading to Cup A Joe.

I love Cup-a-Joe! I work in Hillsborough so, whenever I get a coffee craving, I have to make a stop here. My absolute favorite coffee is their bee thousand. It has whipped cream on top, with a drizzle of honey, and fresh ground cinnamon. Perfection!
