I recently returned, with great anticipation, to Typhoon for a special dinner. There were no Thaiphoonigan rains this time, just a glorious summer evening with the sun setting all ablaze. I had made the reservation via open table but when we got there maybe there was one more table occupied. It seemed a bit overkill but I like to be organized about such matters. And it basically remained that way for the rest of the evening. I do not know if Monday nights are a night to avoid but it is summer and the height of tourist season so I would expect their game faces to be on. I happily asked for that separate vegetarian/vegan menu and felt like I had every choice in the world to make. Sadly I did not make any good ones. The steamed veggie dumplings, though I should be grateful they had them, As it was suggested to me they might be out of them!, were awful. Overcooked and very bland. My entrée, the Mongolian Tofu, was a little too heavy on the tofu and was very salty though the screaming hot plate on which it was served made for a dramatic presentation. The rice was just rice. I think that the setting, atmosphere and price points are just a little grand for the quality or lack thereof of the food. My husband ordered the Spicy Madness Sushi dinner and he found a hard fish scale in his food when he was almost finished with it. I do not understand why in that big space they are cleaning and preparing raw fish to serve then to customers. I would think the chef would be a little bit more conscientious about it. They did offer to take it off the bill but they should have just done so without putting him in the awkward position of accepting or declining, the latter is what he did. He is far nobler than I am! :))) I had sung Typhoon’s praises for weeks and it did not live up to its hype at all. Average to below average(fish scales) food in an above average environment. I might give them another chance but only on a weekend night. and

Since I have a newfound love the the Hingham shipyard, I made reservations here after my boyfriend and I went to the movies with my parents. Super modern looking place with the option to eat outside(always nice), but my favorite part has to be the show the chef’s put on. When they are making the fresh sushi, you can’t beat watching a dude flip shrimp into his hat. My boyfriend is huge on sushi, so he thoroughly enjoyed his meal, especially because they really listened to him when he explained his shellfish allergy and assured him that they would use completely different pans to cook his meal. I had the salmon, which was perfectly portioned and well seasoned. Overall the place has some really great menu items. Only downfall and loss of a star was the drinks. I ordered a champagne cocktail and they made it wrong 2 times! The first time they literally brought me a vodka and elderberry liquor drink in a martini glass, which tasted like robitussin. Boyfriend gulped it down, go figure. The second time when I ordered a refill(since the REAL drink I ordered was fantastic) they made something else completely, but the server noticed this and took care of it. Stellar service, need better bartenders. Would definitely come here again!

Decent asian place serving chinese, sushi and other asian dishes(vietnamese noodles too I think). Overall, the food is solid, but it is definitely way overpriced compared to other places. I think it is because it is marketed for non-asians, so they think they can jack up the price a bit more. Good for them if they can get the business. If you crave asian food and are willing to pay, then go for it. But I’d suggest saving the money for other places that are equally good, but much cheaper.

Great food, great service. And they were having a kids birthday party with a demo with knives swirling and fires glowing– a hebachi cooking show– should have seen the looks on the group of five year old boys faces! They lapped up their fried rice :)

I’ve been several times and it has become one of my favorites. I love the diverse menu. It’s packed with choices that are on the light side — Vietnamese food is a slam-dunk when trying not to overdo it on the«points»(you know who you are!). Service is prompt and friendly. We love sitting at the bar, getting a great glass of wine and a sushi boat. Great for a date-night, but also for a bunch of friends. Living in the suburbs, sometimes I feel like I’m not cool, but going to Typhoon makes me feel a little hipper than usual. A bit of Boston, right in Hingham Shipyard. Ooohhh, almost forgot — their take out is great, too!

First, the bad. This place can get really loud. There was a group of kids at hibachi & unfortunately you could hear them scream throughout the restaurant. Not the restaurant’s fault but it’s noteworthy. For the good. The food was fun and tasty. My gf & I had the twin summer rolls appetizer and I will go back for those alone if nothing else. The pork steamers could’ve been hotter but no one died. For dinner we shared 5 rolls and had 2 side dishes of rice. All was fantastic. We had banana tempura for dessert. It was too soft however. I’d recommend this place as a good spot bc it’s local and you and your friends wanna have a fun dinner. It’s not quite the place to take your lady or fella for a special occasion and definitely not a first date location. At least not yet. One special note is they have a very good vegetarian and vegan selection. I am neither but I do think it’s awesome they’ve included this.

I LOVE Typhoon in Boston. It is, by far, my favorite sushi restaurant in the city. I was ecstatic when I heard they opened one in the Shipyard. We went at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon; only a few tables were taken. For this, I would expect the service to be far more attentive. We waited for quite sometime to put in our order, receive our drinks and pay the bill. Other than that, it was excellent all around. The ambiance, décor and sushi was all above average. Highly recommend the dinosaur and caterpillar.

I thought it was so cool that you could sit in a booth facing the kitchen! You could watch the chefs making sushi and the TV at the same time! They had TVs suspended from the ceiling above the kitchen area. Not a bad idea! The décor was was great. Loved the contemporary atmosphere! My server was good and really accommodating. It was my birthday and they brought out some delicious cake… minus the singing(thank goodness). The sushi was so-so. I have a few favorite places closer to my house, and Typhoon didn’t hold a candle to them. The presentation was amazing, the rolls came out looking beautiful. I doubt I will be in the area again, but I would go back and try a couple different options.

The atmosphere is beautiful, The drinks are creative & strong, food is good, but it is super expensive here, which is suprising for suburban Chinese food, I mean, Blue Ginger in Wellesley can command the prices, but I do not think Typhoon can & should. I’m just saying…

Late Breaking News: This place has risen in my esteem since learning that they have a vegan menu along with their regular menu. Not just a vegetarian menu but a real vegan menu. In a perfect world those not wanting to eat meat wouldn’t have to have a separate menu but nonetheless, I’m thrilled to know about this. I’ve also heard they have a gluten-free menu too. Wouldn’t it be easier all around though to have just one menu with all the choices? But I’m not arguing as knowing about the vegan menu has made it infinitely more likely that I’ll come to Typhoon Bistro more often for a meal. It’s now a place with plenty of options for all kinds of eaters. I’ve tried a couple of the vegan menu selections and have found the food to be delicious. Just the other day during lunch(they serve both lunch and dinner) I had the Orange Tofu with Broccoli and Rice. For an appetizer we shared the vegetable lettuce wraps which were good but could have used a bit more of the filling. There are plenty of things to choose from on the vegan menu from apps, to soups, to entrees. The Orange Tofu was spicy, not overpowered by the orange with nice firm chunks of tofu. The broccoli was cooked perfectly for me which means it was left with a little bit of a crunch to it. The portion size was considerable leaving me with a doggie bag to take home. The dish is highly reminiscent of the Orange Beef you might be familiar with. This was better tasting and healthier for me not to mention the cows. I only found out about this separate menu when specifically asking the waiter about veg options. My only wish is that Typhoon Bistro would make this menu more readily accessible. When I came here with a friend, she peeked over at the vegan menu I was perusing and ended up ordering her meal from it as well. I have since noticed that they mention the alternate menus on their website but would love for them to mention it to diners at the restaurant. Anyway you look at it though, it’s a very good thing.

The duck was awesome. Sat at the bar and had great service on a dead Monday. Great bar and when you’re alone what else do you need. Good food and drink with attentive service. Previous post from Unilocaler had a rough time with host. I have been told he has departed.

One of the reasons I was hesitant to move to the South Shore is that I hated to leave behind my favorite sushi restaurant, Fugakyu. I heard the sushi at Typhoon was decent, but I was skeptical — I shouldn’t have been. I like my sushi on the more traditional side; I won’t order any crazy rolls or any sushi with cream cheese as an ingredient. The nigiri here is fresh and always tasty, and as for the maki, the spicy tuna rolls are a real stand-out. We love sitting at the bar– great ambiance at the bar, and we’ve never had to wait for a spot to sit down. I completely agree with everyone who says the service is good. We’ve been here a handful of time, and the service is consistently pleasant and attentive. As for cost, I think it’s comparable with a decent sushi restaurant: nigiri, a few maki, and some Sapporos comes to ~ $ 60 with tip. This is our new go-to spot for sushi. So glad we gave it a chance!

I’ve been here twice for lunch, and was underwhelmed both times. The food is standard at best and the restaurant’s energy level is anemic.

A 4-star review is a bit generous, but the things that are great about this place are far better than 3-stars, so it didn’t seem right to go that low. The first time we came here, they didn’t have their liquor license yet(Boo), nor did they have any green tea. WTF, an Asian restaurant with no green tea? If I can’t have alcohol you could at least serve me green tea. Anyway, it was summer and we got salads that night — which was a bad idea. They were expensive and small and we left hungry. I don’t remember who had what, but I’m pretty sure mine was cabbage based and came with shredded chicken(boring) and my husband had some version of a salad with beef. I do remember that we started with dumplings though and they were delicious. Another time we sat at the Teppanyaki grill to celebrate a friend’s engagement. That was a true highlight. The atmosphere was really nice and not at all tacky(think of that episode of The Office where they go for Teppanyaki — this place is NOTHING like that). The quality of the food was impressive with filet mignon and lobster as options(as well as the standard shrimp & chicken). I do remember the fried rice being a bit under-seasoned, but still quite good. The grilled vegetables and grilled fruit(with caramel sauce) for dessert were both wonderful. It was a truly enjoyable night. It was a little expensive, but we did get a show with our meal and service was terrific. The last 2 times we’ve been here it’s been on Friday nights and the place has been insanely loud due to voluminous children. I’m kind of sad that what was once a date spot for us is now apparently THE place in town to bring your middle-school aged kids for birthday parties. The screeching was so oppressive the other night, we opted for take-out. Foolishly, I forgot about my previous mistake and I got one of those stupid salads again though this time with rubbery shrimp and my hot & sour soup was also pretty awful tasting too. I know it’s bad when I offer it to my dog and he declines. But, my husband really liked his Wonton soup and Thai fried rice with beef. Come to think of it, he got a really great beef dish one other time we were there too. I think I’ve just made poorer menu choices than him a few times. Overall though, if you order correctly and the noise level is reasonable, Typhoon is really quite nice.

I can’t give this restuarant a better rating, because the service was truly that bad. First of all, the food was great. Menu is large with many great choices. We went on a Wednesday night, and the place was fairly empty. I was with a group of ~7 of us, and I think we were our server’s only table. I would have expected plenty of attention from her. Our table ordered a mix of cooked and raw entrees. I’d say we waited about an average amount of time before the food started coming out, but here is where it gets bad. The cooked entrees came out first, which I found to be strange but not a big deal, until it took another 10 minutes to start bringing out the sushi. But not all of the sushi came out. My order was the last to arrive, and from when I started to look at my watch, I timed my sushi roll to take another 45 minutes to come out. I’m not exaggerating — 45 minutes. Now, I have worked in the restaurant industry before, and I understand that funny things can happen behind the scenes that can really screw up a diner’s experience. The worst part in my mind was that our server offered no explanation of what was the problem. No explanation, no apologies, nothing. And she didn’t even keep the water glasses full and the drinks coming. As I got more and more pissed off, I finally told her that we would like to order a complimentary round of drinks, and I did not plan on paying for my meal, in fact, she could cancel the order since the rest of my table was finished eating. She kindly brought us the drinks along with my food, and they took 10% off the entire bill. It helped, but it was way too late. Although we all liked our food very much, I really don’t see myself going to this place again. Three hours is just way too long to eat some sushi on a Wednesday night.

I’ve frequented the Boston location and this location is much trendier. The restaurant is fairly new and the décor and atmosphere is great for a date night. Dim lighting, candles, soft music. They even have outdoor seating with flame-lamp heaters. Menu– on the expensive side but they have sushi and fancy rolls menu for decent prices. They also have $ 12 and under rice dishes in their side menus that are more like entrees. Typhoon is also great for their Happy Hour Half-Priced Appetizer at the bar. Service– I have to agree with another Unilocaler. The service is great BUT you do notice waiters just hanging around waiting to do something. Just walking about looking around. The place is definitely over staffed. Location– Plenty of Free Parking unlike the Boston Location. The food is delicious, sushi is great, service wonderful!

I really liked this place the first few times I came in. The atmosphere is great and the food is pretty tasty. However the bar staff is unprofessional. I dealt with the staff for a while but this last time irritated me so much that I don’t want to come back. I sat at the bar waiting for the rest of my group and the bartender asked for my ID. No problems there, but then he stared at it for a long time and finally said, fyi we don’t take out of state ids. I’ll serve you THIS time. This same guy carded me in the past and never commented on it being a Maine ID. Later the rest of my group came and he didn’t card them at all! When I was ready for a refill, he ignored me! Its fine though, Beer works and the other restaurants at the shipyard have no problems taking Mainers, so thats where I’ll be spending my money on Fridays.

I have been here a couple times with the wife since it opened and have experienced both times: — Desperate wait staff. Dramatically overstaffed for the foot traffic and it was clear the waiters came from a lower-end chain restaurant before and didn’t know what to do with themselves so they decided to fill our water every 15 seconds :) — Exceptional food. Extremely tasty, fresh and healthy(for what it is) — Expansive menu — EXPENSIVE menu — Cool ambiance(if it’s your sort of thing — I can see how some might not like it) As it’s right around the corner from us I am confident we’ll be back.

This place has a «manager» that is so rude and awful to not only the waitstaff but to the customers as well. I will never go to this place again while this person is here, who is he? Well all I can say is that he’s middle easten looking and when asked his name I was given a rude«You don’t need to know!» Why this person is here is beyond me. So Typhoons, you sounded like so much of a funplace to go to, but really? The Eurotrash music, the horrible treatment I witnessed with the waitstaff but with myself and other customers. The overpriced«not so special» food. Really now?

I really think this fits well in the Shipyard. The location and décor are beautiful, and it is a fine dining Asian place for sure. It is perfect for a date night before or after a movie, but is also great because it is open late. The outdoor dining is ample and staff was nice, although it seems like a ton of people work there! The presentation of the food is beautiful, with mine arranged like a crane and very nice garnishes. They also have a great selection of drinks. It is pricey, but well worth it for the experience you get. They also have more private areas where they can cook on the table or for groups.
