I am a huge fan of this place! The owner and his Dad are so friendly and really make the customer feel at home. I’m a big fan of the matzoh ball soup along with their beef brisket sandwiches. But make sure you order early, because they tend to sell out of both those items. Corn beef is good too… but I think I’ll stick with the briskey. I’m a big fan.

Great deli sandwiches served by an incredibly friendly and deeply committed local business owner. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the ingredients. I’d like to recommend a particular sandwich, but I tend to try a new one each time, and have yet to be disappointed. One tip: if you like coleslaw, this place knocks it out of the park!

As far as Jewish deli’s go I do NOT recommend this one. I got a plain Rubin and it was $ 13. At this price I was expecting a heaping 4 inch sandwich. That is not what I got. I had high expectations for this place and was let down. On the other hand they do smoke their own salmon and take it right off the skin for you when your order smoked salmon.

It’s def no Katz’s, but it will get you your fix. As stated on here previously, it is a family operation which is nice to see. They definitely aim to please with a warm welcome, and suggestions about the menu items. The potato knish was pretty tasty, and so was my pastrami sandwich. The meat was a little too gristly for my liking, but the flavors were spot on. I was not a huge fan on the cucumbers, they were too cucy tasting; I like my pickles sour. It was definitely a little more expensive then I was anticipating but, that’s Hoboken for you. Regardless, give it a shot, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Totally overpriced. Food is okay but nothing like New Yorks Jewish delis. Also, you have to ask for a side in order for them to give it to you. Even though the menu says it comes with it. They said they don’t want to waste the sides. Uhhh ok buddy.

I came down with the flu, so I was looking for a little comfort food to help me battle it off. Matzoh ball soup sounded perfect, and I pass Hoboken on Rye everyday on my walk home, but never tried it. After reading over the Unilocal reviews, I knew I was taking a gamble since there were both good, bad, and lukewarm reviews. I would have to say my review will be lukewarm, much like how my food arrived. I ordered delivery, and was told that it would be 10 – 15 minutes. 45 minutes later my order showed up. I got a large Matzoh Ball soup and a Park Ave sandwich. Soup was less than lukewarm, and they hadn’t made potato salad that day so I settled on Russian dressing instead on my Park Ave. Spent about $ 25 on a soup and a sandwich incl tip, so definitely WAY pricey for what you get. The soup, I had to add salt and pepper to it so I could somewhat enjoy it. No veggies, just matzoh balls, noodles, and a few pieces of chicken. I’d say the soup gets 2 stars. However, the sandwich was definitely awesome and delicious. Worth $ 12.50? Definitely not. I’d say more like $ 7 or $ 8, as it was served on a round roll. However, it was delicious. Also came with a small pickle half. Overall, I’d say 2.5 stars due to price, temperature of food, and wait time. However, I think I would maybe stop in again on my way home if I’m ever craving pastrami, corned beef, or some potato pancakes.

Seeming to be a hole in the wall with not much flair on the outside or inside, Hoboken on Rye produces a mean sandwich. Big, but not so big you can’t eat it like a normal human and fresh and delicious ingredient. Potato pancakes are what attracted me there. The price is expensive, but everyone in Hoboken is rich so it’s not so far from reality.

Yes! You have to try this place. We were served by the friendliest guy in the world with such a passion for their food that his energy was contagious. I got the potato pancake sandwich which is just as good as it sounds. A fat stack of corned beef sandwiched between two potato pancakes and some Russian dressing? I’ll happily hop on PATH for another one of these. A bit on the messy side but I’m okay with getting my hands dirty. The knishes were amazing too.

Simply said, Hoboken on Rye makes some of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. The Blairs know their way around the kitchen, and it shows in everything from the coleslaw to the knishes. Do yourself a favor and give it a try, I guarantee that once you start going… you won’t be able to stop! Their food is so good that I’m thinking of converting!

After my weekly appointment at Lorraine’s House of Style, I stopped in to Hoboken on Rye. I had heard good things and wanted to grab a bite. I walked in and was greeted like family.(You know how I am about customer service and first impressions). They get an A+! I scanned the menu after getting several suggestions from a very nice man, who happened to be the owner. I decided on the River Street. As we chatted, my sandwich was skillfully built to perfection. Did I mention the sandwich was huge? I could not wait to get home to unwrap the foil mound in the bottom of the black bag. Bread, fresh; meat flavorful; dressing & cole slaw just the right amount. Of course I could not eat the whole sandwich in one sitting. There was more than enough for another meal. Thank God for the vegetable drawer, no one ever looks there. This is definitely a must try! I’m really glad I did! They even offered me bagels. I’m going to have one tomorrow for breakfast. The bagels smell fantastic! See you next time!

Mixed emotions on rye! I had been wanting to try this new deli for some time and finally had the opportunity. After all, how much fresh mutz can one eat! I had an incredibly tasty sandwich and a kasha knish that was surprisingly good. The place was clean, the staff was really cool and friendly and overall when I want food it’s taste that’s important. Then you get rung out. Sandwich and a knish for $ 19! Yes, it was a really good sandwich. Yes, it was a really good knish. Yes, it was more than I am willing to pay every day. Had the sandwich been twice the size it was, maybe I’d be okay with it but while I will go here again, I just didn’t see the justification for the price. Great quality, great people, not so great price.

I am a deli fanatic. I read books about them. I travel long distances and into bad neighborhoods to try them. I had really high hopes for Hoboken on Rye, and decided to not write a review based on my first trip there. My second trip required a review. Sadly, the worst type of review. I ordered two things: a Pastrami on rye and a Turkey on rye. The turkey was fine, its turkey. A bit dry, a bit thin for a freshly roasted turkey, but fine. The pastrami. Oh boy. As far as I can tell, a store bought Hebrew National pastrami was sliced(mangled) to a paper thin consistency that vaguely resembled the pastrami you would get at a local deli somewhere in Iowa(likely with a Butterball logo on the window). So much for cutting against the grain, this thing looks like it was cut from every angle. Now the kicker — the pile of ‘meat’ was put into the microwave for a long period of time to achieve ‘hot pastrami’. Never mind that this is done in a steamer tray typically to retain moisture, and a microwave is designed to remove it. Never mind that it happened in plain view of a customer. If there was a deli review board, this would be an immediate shutdown offense. The resulting sandwich was borderline inedible. It took me 15 minutes of sifting and trimming through the pile to get enough to make a half of a very lousy sandwich. Fat is good on pastrami, but when its stringy and overwhelms, and thanks to a deli slicer is thicker than the meat, its bad. I threw out half the sandwich and literally said to my fiancée, who asked for a bite, ‘do yourself a favor and don’t taste it, it might ruin your night. The pickle situation is also a mess. A barrel of pickles supermarket style(that looked fresh out of the Claussen jar) and a weak single spear in a bag is not what you should expect out of a Jewish deli. Spend the money to provide your customers with good pickles, or don’t call yourself a Jewish deli, its really that simple. I wanted this place to succeed, but now I want it to go away, and fast.

I do like this place and I“m definitely going to come back again one of these days but to be honest I felt the price point was a little too high for sandwich. I most definitely would have bumped this review to 4 stars if everything was $ 2 less. Let’s talk about why. I ordered the chicken salad with crispy pastrami(microwaved I believe) on rye. It lacked a certain flavor/salt/accoutrements and though it was somewhat large, it definitely lacked the feeling and satisfaction. It kind of looked raggedy. Maybe the bread? This bad boy totalled $ 9/$ 10. Again, I don’t think I would have been as harsh with this sammy if it cost $ 7. My friends enjoyed the sloppy joe and the reuben. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his reuben. He was a happy little camper though he did say again that $ 12 sandwich should have been…$ 10. $ 2 less. My man ordered the sloppy joe. This thing was a beast. He couldn’t even really bite into it so he split it up. The turkey half was blah he did say the pastrami and corned beef were amazing. This sandwich was close to $ 15. Again, I think we all would have felt more on par if our sandwiches were a wee bit cheaper. It’s hard to compare Jewish delis since there are some great predecessors out there, and if you are going to charge the big bucks then I need to leave being like wow. And, that didn’t happen this time. Overall, I’ll be back for that white fish salad since I had a taste and it was OUTOFTHISWORLD and to get after some matzah ball soup and maybe just stick with the corned beef and pastrami when I’m in the mood.

I’m a fan of their sandwiches, they pack them fairly well, but don’t expect it to be «Katz’s» sized. They are more expensive than I like. Considering they are surrounded by Italian delis that offer great sandwiches at $ 8 – 10, it’s hard to justify paying $ 11 – 13 at HoR. That is what loses 1 star for me. Otherwise, be staff has been nothing but friendly and accommodating. Sure, I read other reviews and it sounds like typical growing pains. I have been eating here since Day 1. Tried about 10 sandwiches before writing this. One time I didn’t get a pickle. Another time they forgot the brown gravy they made with their homemade brisket sandwich. Eh. Is that worth coming on here and slamming them to one star? No. Tasty? Yes. Expensive? Yes. 4 stars, try it. It may be a refreshing change from the Saturday Roast Beef at Fiore’s or Vito’s Hero at Vito’s.

My boyfriend was dying to try this place, so we stopped in for lunch last week(although we both walked right past it). I didn’t know it was going to be so tiny. There’s no seating, so if you’re grabbing food from here, be prepared to head back home or to the park if it’s nice out. The people working there(I assume the family who owns it) couldn’t have been nicer. They were very helpful and friendly. I grew up on Italian delis, so I had to take my boyfriends advice on what to order. I went with a simple corned beef on rye, he went with something a little more daring(I can’t remember what exactly). We also decided to try the pierogis — actually, just pierogi, as only one comes in an order for $ 3.50! That and the two sandwiches cost us close to $ 30. We finally made it home to try the food. I thought mine was good — nothing great. My boyfriend felt the same. The pierogi was actually ice cold. I was expecting it to be warmed up, but I guess I was wrong! It was good as well, and we both liked the onions. I don’t think this will be a regular stop for me, but if Jewish delis are your thing, I’d give it a shot. I love seeing local and family-owned business, so I do wish them the best of luck with their new business!

A great, new family-owned business on First Street. A Jewish deli in Hoboken is a long time coming and these guys sure do deliver. As a pastrami lover, I must say their pastrami is delicious and I was immediately drawn to the Hudson Street sandwich: pastrami and chicken salad on rye — heavenly. Top it off with a pickle and some awesome cole slaw, and it can’t get much better. Clearly, it’s all fantastic, but perhaps a little pricey. At the least, you’re paying $ 9 for a sandwich, which probably isn’t bad for the quality. Overall, I love it, but it’s probably something I can only handle once a week — for my heart and for my wallet.

Fantastic addition to the neighborhood. This is a family run business which is a big bonus and as a bigger bonus, they’re like the nicest family ever. Matzo ball soup — may have been some of the best I’ve ever had Pastrami on rye — awesome, both the meat, bread and mustard(though the pastrami is extra fatty) Side of coleslaw — I’ll be getting extra of this next time Potato pancakes — HUGE and a tiny bit thick for me but that’s just a personal preference… they tasted great Two to three meals worth of food rings in around $ 25. Free delivery. No seating so grab your food and head home or to the park if you’re lucky enough to get a nice day. All this and Dr Brown’s soda makes me an automatic regular customer.

Eureka! A jewish deli in my hood. Faaantastic. This no frills, family run, high-quality deli hits the spot if you A) love a classic Pastrami or Corned Beef on Rye w/mustard and B) If you crave Bagels, lox, whitefish… The Corned Beef and Pastrami were melt-in-your-mouth good(make sure you order it hot, on rye, w/mustard or russian if that’s your thing). And the coleslaw is off the hook… really addictive. The whitefish salad was full of chunks of whitefish, and the bagels were great(nice outside crust, soft in the middle). There are some colorful characters in this welcome addition to town — go check it out, everything seems homemade and fresh. And they are super nice. Finally — this is a place Hoboken really needed(well, I needed it). Cheers!

The best thing to happen to Hoboken since sliced Rye bread. This place just opened up around the corner from my apt. So of course I stopped in to try the food. In less then a week I have been 3 times now. Why do I like this place so much? THETURKEY! I got a turkey Reuben and it was so good I almost went back to yell at them. It should be illegal to serve turkey this good, it belongs in a museum of goodness somewhere. The English language does not have enough positive adjectives to describe the pleasure voyage my mouth goes on when I bite into one of their Turkey Sandwiches. Right now I am willing to say best black and white cookie in Hoboken, and I will fist fight anyone who disagrees with me. Other points of interest in this place would be the Lox with cream cheese bagel as seen in the photo I uploaded. The Lox is fantastic you can really taste the quality of the Lox. If your looking for a new Deli to try out this is the place to be.

Can’t really believe this is the first Jewish Deli in Hoboken. Stopped by here to pick up some goods for lunch. This tiny, simple deli opened up last week and seems to be doing well. Their menu looks to be quickly expanding. The corned beef was good, not too fatty, and a generous amount of meat to bread ratio. The matza ball soup tasted like it came from someone’s bubby. Not too salty and a great dense matza ball that floats! The knishes are giant, and pretty darn heavy, but they do have some uncovnetional flavors. They also have some good looking hamentashen. I would definitely come back and get the soup again and try out a couple other sandwhices too. Good place to pick up some food for a casual lunch.
