Hollydae

I brought a dress at a local store here and it fit fine but needed a little alteration. The store owner gave me Holly’s card and I went there. She was nice and friendly and knew exactly what needed to be done to make the dress fit great. I told her if I ever need another dress altered, I’d go back to her.

I went to holly this past summer for alterations on my simple wedding dress. I had no problem getting hold of her, but I could see why it’s a hit or miss. She’s in and out all day, I think she must live nearby the shop. My alterations were super simple, a little hem and taking the shoulder straps up an inch, and she did a good, solid job, no problems at all. Only teeny issue I guess is the alterations cost almost as much as the dress (my dress was very inexpensive) but all things considered, it’s worth it to pay for a good tailor. I’d go back to her.

I wanted to like this place but I’ll really never know. I need alterations for a black tie dress and approached Holly because of her apparent expertise in dresses. Twice now I’ve made appointments for which she wasn’t there. The first appointment I was early and rang the bell just in case. Not getting an answer, I waited 5 more minutes until my actual appointment time. Rang again and knocked. Still nothing. 10 minutes after my appointment time I proceeded to ring AND knock AND by that time had made 3 phone calls to her; all unanswered. I walked all the way home having wasted an afternoon.
She did call me back that evening apologizing and stating that she «had people in and out of the shop all afternoon» and wasn’t sure how we missed each other. **(I’m not sure either, as the shop was locked and appeared empty through the front door curtain when I was there)**. Wanting to give her a second chance I made a second appointment for today. Again I make the trek all the way uptown (I’m downtown west) and AGAIN she was not there! I called and she said she thought our appointment was at 4pm as our first appointment was. I said no, we both agreed on 2pm today. So now I’ve wasted two afternoons trekking up and downtown and still need a tailor. As a small business owner myself, I understand things get mixed up but, really, two days in a row? And she stated on the phone last night that she’d be there all day, that she had several other appointments this afternoon!
Maybe it’s better on the weekends? Either way — I’m extremely disappointed.

Holly is amazing. She is a really professional dressmaker and tailor… with a good sense of style and great eye for making your clothes fit perfectly. She isn’t afraid to tell you when you should do something to make the piece look better — and they always come out fantastic. I would go to her in a heartbeat to make a dress for a special occasion and I’ve been using her as my «go to» tailor for many years in Hoboken. She also has a wonderful personality and makes the entire experience fun.

I have had 3 dresses all completely different styles altered at Hollydae and they all came out fantastic. Holly goes above and beyond to make sure you will feel beautiful in your dress. She is creative and talented. I was there just a week ago trying on a dress she altered and thought it looked great. She suggested we change the neckline from straight to a sweetheart line to make it look even better. I was nervous it might ruin the dress, but she whisked it away and 10 minutes later it was back and looking amazing even better than before. It is great to have a tailor in town I can trust and her prices are reasonable for the magic she creates.
