Enjoyed the house tour. Learned a lot about southern Maryland and the revolutionary and civil wars. Interesting family tree. Walked around the gardens and buildings. Will definitely take people from out of town here.

I have visited Sotterley many times over the past 25 years and believe it is one of the most charming and attractive properties of this sort still open to the public. It is the only Maryland Tidewater plantation of this era that is open to the public. It is set in a quiet, idyllic area of Southern Maryland and sits high on a hill overlooking the Patuxent River. The mansion is circa 1703 and looks like a mini-version of Mount Vernon. The gardens are modest but very nice. The woodland paths make for a lovely nature walk. The mansion is lovely in an architectural sense and the interior has many interesting features. There are several old out-buildings that are of interest as well. This is a very peaceful property well off the beaten track.

I came here for the wine festival. It was a little bit of a drive to get here, but lots and lots of space for parking and walking around. The festival was awesome. They had live music, lots of vineyard reps allowing you drink several wines, though you had to pay for their premium wines(mostly ports). There was food to buy on site though I never made it to any. I can’t wait for next year’s festival.

I found this place in my day trips from DC guidebook. How does one really rate a plantation? It was built circa 1703. Comes complete with a plantation house, gardens, smoke house, corn crib, and slave house. Allegedly, it served as the inspiration for Mount Vernon. You can see glimpses of that in the house itself and they way it sits on the land, but make no mistake, that’s where the comparison ends. While Mount Vernon is well worth the trip, I would not make a separate trip out here.(i.e. only if you happen to be passing by). As far as entertainment value, we did a self-guided ground tour, which lasted 30 min. We tried for the house tour, but it’s only offered on the hour and the woman is strict about late joiners. Nonetheless, you can peak your head into the windows and pretty much see everything.
