Back at the Schnitzelhaus a year later. All’s well. Food was excellent(wiener schnitzel with spaetzle and beer goulash) Service was fine. Portions are large… we left with tomorrow’s lunch! Brought an apple strudel home for later. Don’t miss this if you have even a passing affection for German cuisine.

I think this is my first five star rating. Only because it needs to stand out from the rest. It is small and in an unremarkable location, which would normally drag it down to four stars, but they make it up in food and service. We first ate here a year ago and were impressed; then devastated by the news that the owner was going back home to Germany. This year we were pleased to see it survived and, better still, it is even better than before under new ownership by an Austrian owner. The food is excellent! I’d say you get more than you pay for here. The service is excellent with friendly and enthusiastic servers. The owner is obviously proud of his establishment and it shows. Like many places on Anna Maria Island, it is pretty small and very popular, so you should consider calling in for a reservation. No reservation? Try anyway and you’ll see how accommodating they can be.

Stopped by for dessert. Excellent apple strudel — tasted freshly made — served warm with one scoop of vanilla ice cream. My German husband had a Warsteiner from tap — Sehr gut. Very friendly service.

I wish I could give this place a –5 star rating. You MUST have reservations AND be prepared to wait. We waited 15 – 20 minutes for our table even though we were on time(we were actually early). We checked on the table 2 – 3 times, but were told it was not ready yet. We would have been waiting longer, but my husband went in, near the table, and the people still seated at our table saw him request our table and they had finished and paid and were finishing their drinks. We had the WORST service we have ever had. It seemed as though it was because we do not drink alcohol. WEWEREIGNORED. We ordered water, which was brought after about 20 minutes in small wine glasses. No refills for about 20 more minutes. We ordered an appetizer and our main course when they took our drink order. We had to ASK about our order several times over the next 30 minutes. It was busy, but other tables, where people were ordering alcoholic beverages, were waited upon and their orders filled in an appropriate amount of time. We ordered leberwurstplatte for the appetizer, which would probably not have been served as quickly as it was(30 min) if we had not asked about it when we finally got a waitress to pay attention to us.(We were seated where they constantly walked past our table, but would not look our direction.) Our main course, rinderroulade and sauerbraten, came after another 30 or so minutes. They were edible, but a far cry from what we had in Germany. And definitely not worth the trouble of eating there. When we were finished we had to ask for our check(10 – 15 min wait) and then waited an inordinate amount of time for our credit card and receipt(again 10 min or so). In addition, other people were being given complementary German chocolates with their check. We got«fun size Twix». That was an insult. Horrible, horrible, horrible! Do not go there if you do not drink alcohol. They certainly did not want our business.

Just got into town, looking for a late dinner and gave Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus a shot! So glad we did, the food was spectacular and service was equally good! I tried the Bayerischer Schweinebraten while my wife had the Rinderroulade. Both meals were served very fresh and hot(we walked in 25 minutes before posted closing time) with sides that were flavorful and plenty. I had roasted potatoes and red cabbage, my wife had the cabbage and Spatzle(the best I had ever eaten). Our server was very friendly and attentive, as was the owner who greeted each customer, checked on their food after received at the table and opened the door for us as we left! We will be back, at least once, before the week is over here!

YUM!!! great service. I mean really really great. The servers work as a team and the result is a very smooth experience. Very attentive! The food seems very authentic though I’m no expert. My seven year old gobbled down everything, the kids bratwurst and roasted potatoes. I had lentil bacon soup, just like grandma would make. Probably! The schnitzel is unbelievable.

The Old Hamberg Schnitzelhaus is not as good as it was a year ago. The new owners really need to improve the high standards of the once outstanding German restaurant. The soft pretzels were over cooked. The potato pancakes were also over cooked tough, they also raised the price of the meals.

Holy cow! Best food we’ve had during the last 10 days of travel. Rich flavors well developed, great staff, happy & smiling, and very helpful. Not inexpensive but worth every penny. Cannot go wrong here.

I had a wonderful experience here. They were very busy so they seated us at the bar, the even the ambiance and service at the bar was great! I ordered the Swiss Schnitzel and was most pleased with my meal amongst the others I tried from my family, but every entrée was delicious. The presentation and everything was lovely. Will return and order the same thing again!

Oh Hell yeah. This place is a perfect 10 baby. Great German food and beer, service is friendly, and ambiance feels right. This place hosts a lot of regulars and most are up there in age, but the establishment maintains an energetic and playful atmosphere. I really do enjoy this joint, its like an old friend.

We just experienced the most amazing meal I have had in recent memory. Everything was beyond wildest expectations. The cucumber soup was cold and refreshing the spaetzle with light and warm the chicken livers were decadent beyond words and the giant pork shank was something made for photographs. I am the happiest sort of satisfied.

New owners Gary and Chef Armin are maintaining, and even improving, the standards of this reliable restaurant that has served authentic German food on Anna Maria Island for more than 15 years. The menu remains unchanged, with nice presentations(see pix). Salads are a bit fancier than they were and portions seem a bit larger. Mrs. Nibbler had a bratwurst platter with tangy sauerkraut. I had a veal jagerschnitzel absolutely covered in mushrooms. Both dishes included perfectly pan-roasted potatoes and everything was delicious. Our server Tracy was excellent and food service was quick. While Chef Armin runs the kitchen Gary runs the bar while taking time to visit guests and help with table service. His friendly conversation and attention to detail bode well for the restaurant’s continuing popularity. Gary keeps four types of German beer on draft — Pllsener, Hefeweisen, dark and Oktoberfest — all served in authentic glasses of 0,3, 0.5 and full liter sizes. It was a pleasant surprise that each of our beers were filled *over* the glass measuring line. While there wasn’t much room for dessert we couldn’t resist the apple streudle, an attractive and delicious presentation with ice cream, chocolate and whipped cream that’s as good as any you’ll find in Europe. And for the perfect finish, order a couple bottles of the German liqueur Underberg, served in its tall, distinctive stemware, Hier ist gut essen! Prost!

We needed a bite to eat on our last night and everything was mobbed downtown so we started to explore. We did a quick search and thought«German restaurant on Anna Marie island?» So off we went after reading good reviews. We were not disappointed. The beer, potato pancakes, sauerbraten and roasted pork were outstanding. The place is very homey and there is no rush in finishing up and moving out. I recommend this place. Gary and Chef Armin are amazing hosts! Go now and enjoy some very authentic food.
