came here thinking«these guys are the pros». i needed a clear satin oil based coat that could be applied over an oil based paint. i was sold a can of helmsman and told that’s what i need. i happily paid alot for this little can and went home. something told me to read the label closely. right on the label it said it needed to be applied on a bare wood. arghhhh. i called the 800 number on the can and the expert couldn’t verify i could do what i needed to do. he said it *might* be ok but there was a possible incompatibility between the solvents used in the two coatings. it might work, it might dissolve all my paint! not reassuring… he told me to patch test it. fortunately it did work. had it not, i only would have lost the area i tested on. would have been a real bummer if everything went south on the entire project.
