Got a green thumb? Or maybe you prefer growing your own veggies organically but don’t have yard space for your own garden… well, you’re luck! Since 1975, the City and County of Honolulu has offered inexpensive fairly large garden plots in various(10) areas of its densely populated communities. Becoming a member of these gardens allows residents to meet with others and develop a sense of community. Meanwhile, the C&C offers programs to ensure successful gardening with regular meetings, in person, at each site. There are rules and regulations that must be followed so that everyone can trust and share with their neighbors. If you live in this area and want to try out your planting skills, you should give it a try. To get started, you can apply for a plot either by calling the Community Garden Coordinator at 522‑7390 or attending a scheduled monthly meeting at the garden. During our frequent walks around Diamond Head we pass by this community garden. I have admired the green thumbs of those who have flourishing plantings in here as I seem to have the dreaded«brown thumb». Believe me, I tried growing cooking herbs in a planter box, asked for assistance at garden shops and monitored the amount of water and sunlight yet all my plants seem to just wither away. It has gotten so bad that I swear that I could even«kill off» silk plants!(sigh, sigh)
