Flamingo Mart

The guy behind the truck is so rude!!! All I wanted is 2 scoops of rice, and he waved me away so he can make money from the ppl behind me. I was going to pay for the rice. What a #÷%=@&€!!!

I’ve been here before for the Flamingo (in Pearl City) pies. Love the the banana and the sweet potato pies. This time I bought the apple pie. Besides the pies displayed, they have more pies in the back (refridgerated). I asked when the deliveries come in because I thought I’d wait for a fresh pie. The answer was not very specific. About 11am but sometimes not till 3pm. Ok… so I took the one from the back. MISTAKE! how old was that pie??? It had mold! Yikees!
I hate to diss a place for one incident but I won’t buy pies from this place again… I’m scared!

This place is an eye sore and a dark spot in an otherwise OK neighborhood. At any given time you’ll see 3 – 10 guys just loitering in the parking lot, chain smoking and spitting on the ground. Later at night a regular car or two stays in the lot for hours at a time, selling drugs. I live in the neighborhood but take a longer route to Safeway just to avoid this place.

There are only two reasons to ever visit Flamingo Mart:
1) Banana Pie
2) Peach Pie
I’ve had the chance to eat both and the crust is wonderful. My favorite is the peach but my boyfriend prefers the banana. Warm up your slice in the microwave and eat it ala mode. Oh Lord! Great option for potlucks! My stars are really only for the pies because you’d have to drive to Pearl City to get a Flamingo pie.
But here are «other» reasons why folks visit Flamingo Mart:
1) Late night liquor stop. Not gonna lie, they actually had a fairly impressive liquor selection.
2) Cigarettes. Disgusting habit which I am not a fan of, but honestly I’d rather you smoke than use those e-​cigarette things. Let’s just do everyone a favor and don’t smoke! We all get to live longer!
3) The Coin Machine Game. There’s a machine at Chuck E Cheese which my boyfriend and I love to play where you put a token in and it falls onto a shelf of tokens. You put tokens in endlessly hoping that you’ll hit the mother load where all the coins will fall over the edge. They have this with quarters.
4) It’s the end of the world, the zombies have surrounded the building, but the good news is you’ve made a barricade with the coin machine game and you’ve got tons of convenience store supplies to make it through the Winter. The unfortunate news it the zombies die when it snows, but they multiply during the rain.

I like to host dinners at my home and invite family and good friends. Born into a family where my father was a Chinese chef, I have acquired some of the culinary skills and can whip up a Chinese meal so I usually have my sister bring dessert as baking is NOT my thing.
She brought over this banana pie from Flamingo Mart and at first I had to think twice as I am not familiar with banana pies. When it came to dessert time I was a little hesitant but after I took my first bite, I ended up wolfing down the whole piece and wanted another one!
The crust is really flaky and the banana filling is so yummy. Lots of bananas and not too sweet. Texture inside still was firm as mushy can be unappetizing.
Since then, if I have been invited to someone’s home and I need to bring dessert, here is a place that I will stop by to pick-​up a pie.

sketchy place, cuz they have gambling machines there, but the pies are GOOD. They are know for the banana pie, but I also ate their peach and apple. My fav is the apple. My wife fav is the banana. We agree the crusts are really good and thick so they don’t fall apart when serving. These pies are heavy. Carry one and you know what I mean.
Convenient location for me as its on the way to the H1 east bound. I always get one on the way home.

The banana pie is a solid 4 stars — packed with fruit, a delicious, soft crust and has a familiar baked-​at-​home kind of flavor. I would love to go back and try the other fruit pies.
The oxtail soup was pretty good too — probably 3 stars. It was pretty good and it DID have a large portion of meat. The oxtail here is a bit fatty but the broth is good. They pack it easy for transport, which is really nice.

I don’t really care for fruit pies, but I LOVE their fruit pies here. I’ve tried the apple, banana, and the peach pies here and they were all so delicious! Instead of having that preserved fruit taste, the fruits have a fresh taste.
One downside to this place is that it is also a convenient store where they have liquor and cigarettes. Last time I came to this place, there was a crazy, homeless man in the store, so I had to sit in the car for a while before I entered Flamingo Mart. It was also fairly late in night, which may explain the reason for that incident.

The new changes to the store are not only disturbing but also gross. The first indication of the change is the store windows are covered in huge unattractive signs that read ‘fine wine’ and ‘fine liquor’ in all capital letters. Signs proclaiming 40oz specials. «Cheap cigarettes». It just came off as desperate which I understand since the new Safeway has opened up next door. They have the advantage of being more convenient though.
The worst part is the new addition of selling drug paraphernalia and bb guns. Is that even legal? I’m guessing not but shit like that flies in Hawaii all the time. Selling bb guns that could easily be mistaken for a gun at a store that is literally across the street from a grade school. Seriously, wtf?! It’s as if the store is a Stephen King book and turned evil.
My family and I tried the banana pie thinking it must be a banana cream pie. It was basically a standard apple pie except filled with a mushed up banana paste. We all found it putrid. If my memory serves me correctly it may have even been apple-​banana. It was the main reason why we avoided the store for over a year. Now we have other reasons to avoid it.
So, basically it’s a great store for people who like their banana pie and oxtail soup, alcoholics on a budget, stoners needing to stock up on supplies and burgeoning child criminals.

Tried the banana pie; good on the first slice; had another slice on the next day from the refrigerator; the pie is not so good cold. Microwaved it, but it wasn’t as good.

Sweet potato pie! $ 15.95 sold out…:-(Got apple pie instead. The pie crust was very good. The rest is just apple pie. Delicious, but nothing unusual. They also have some frozen foods like oxtail soup that is very good.
This outlet for the Flamingo Bakery used to be a 7 – 11. Now the shelves seem to have very little on it. They were out of a couple of things that two different customers requested while I was there. So, I would return, but only for the convenience of the location. I happen to be in the area and needed a dessert to bring to a friend. Maybe I’ll go to Safeway or Times and chance my luck next time. (I want to try that sweet potato pie!)

Its tough getting there because of the new Safeway construction but it’s definitely worth the hassle to get there. My recommendation to get there is to go a block west on S Beretania, to Pensacola to Kinau. That way, you won’t get stuck on the one way traffic right lane on Piikoi.
Remember the Flamingo Restaurant chain? shucks! You’ll have to drive to Pearl City if you want the restaurant… and their OX TAIL SOUP and BANANA PIE.
Banana Pie was my contribution at my family reunion pot luck lunch and it was a definite hit!!!
The have other sundry items at the Flamingo Mart… but can’t go there without betting the banana pie at least!

I drove by this location and noticed a huge sign saying oxtail soup and banana pies. Huh? At an old 7-​Eleven? A few days later when trying to decide what to eat for lunch I decided I’m gonna stop by and try the oxtail soup. I’m not sure if I’m a fan of banana pie because I never had it but I was excited to try. As I pulled up I noticed it said Flamingo Mart and the Flamingo Restaurant van was in the parking lot. Same Flamingos as the restaurant? I love the restaurant so this should be winners. But wait its a convenience store??? I walked in and I guess it just opened because they were still stocking the shelves with products. I found their pie section and there was no banana pie. Hot seller or just a little too early i guess. I did buy some apple pie that I enjoyed greatly. I continued to search for the oxtail soup. I found it, but unfortunately it was frozen. Their hot food section was coming soon. Oh I was somewhat torn. I wanted to eat oxtail soup, but I found comfort knowing that I can buy oxtail soup and beef stew that was ready for my freezer and could enjoy them at home. I have to go back when everything is ready and will buy some oxtail soup and beef stew. But I like the concept and hope they do well. Be back for banana pie too… unless I go to the Pearl City restaurant first.
