When we walked by and saw this place, I was like… oh GAWD, another douchey place with douchey people with douchey food. BUT in actuality, the place was pretty good! I was surprised by the service as well, very nice and very responsive to whatever weird questions we had. We had a lot of dishes, but I had the duck breast plate(a BIT overpriced) but it was so good. the meat was super tender and the gamey flavor of duck was cooked out of it as well. Mixed with the kale, it was a fantastic dish. The ceviche wasn’t bad either, I’ve had better. But it was still pretty good.

Grondin has been on my «must try» list for some time now. There’s a lot of great new eateries in Chinatown these days, but when we were looking for a Friday dinner spot I took the opportunity to check Grondin off my list. We were not disappointed! Food: It’s always a good sign when they start you off with a tasty Amuse Bouche. A little bite sized nugget to kick start the palate is always welcome! My dining companion this evening was my high school daughter who is turning into a serious foodie. We had the Muchines app which was masa with queso served with honey. It was fun sopping up the extra honey on the pieces of masa before popping into our mouth. She ordered the Duck Breast for her dinner, I went with the Pan Roasted Jidori Chicken. The duck breast was tender, perfectly cooked and served on a bed of kale and carrot purée. My chicken was nicely cooked, skin crisped to perfection while keeping the meat tender and juicy. They also have a great variety of craft cocktails and nice selection of fine spirits. Service: Great service with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. We were there early on a Friday evening so I can’t say how it is when it’s really crowded but we experienced excellent service. Atmosphere: Hipster, trendy, cool, all describe Grondin. We sat indoors but I hear there is an outdoor area that we’ll have to return to check out. I’d like to come back just to sit at their bar area to sample more of their cocktails. Value: Priced in the same range as other trendy eateries popping up in the area. Not super cheap but neither wildly over priced as well. I think it’s well worth the menu prices for the atmosphere, service, quality of the ingredients, and creativity of the menu. Overall: My first visit but hopefully not my last! It was fun, tasty, and a very positive experience.

My boyfriends mom recently wanted to take us out to brunch when we were in the Chinatown area. Our timing was way off & everything brunchy had so many lines we almost gave up but then we saw Grondin with open tables and its door wide open. We sat down immediately and were given menus and water. People looked happy as they munched throughout the restaurant which was a good sign. The restaurant was simple chic bistro décor & the lunch menu looked stellar. We honestly were having a lot of trouble picking between sandwiches, small plates & breakfast. There was an excellent mix of french and latin type dishes for whichever flavor profile you were leaving towards. I finally went with the Chicken Sofrito sandwich, my boyfriend the Charcuterie sandwich and his mom got a breakfast plate. The cocktail menu looked killer & I was sad to not try but I was nursing off the weekends fun already and instead ordered the personal french press coffee. The sandwiches came with a lovely salad and we decided to order a side of fries to share after our food was brought out. My Chicken Sofrito sandwich was pretty incredible. The waitress had helped me pick and that can go either way very strongly but this was a total win, a french baguette filled with delicious seasoned jidori chicken, cultido, aioli & jalapeño. I had to pace myself to spread out the deliciousness. My boyfriends Charcuterie was also quite good tasty, filled with house made pâté & ham, spicy greens & pickled red onion. The breakfast plate was huge and by far looked like the best deal with bacon, potatoes, eggs & salad. We had quite a fantastical spread! Oh, and I loved the coffee. They have two sizes, a large or personal. The personal is about 1 – 2 cups of coffee and the french press gives such nice flavor. They also brought me a clear glass mug that somehow added to the experience. Service was pretty good. They checked on us often and filled our water. Our food came out fast minus the fries we ordered later. It was Sunday and they seemed slightly under staffed so I want to give a little leeway here. My 4 instead of 5 stars are for two reasons only. While delicious, I think portions could have been a bit bigger for the cost. Secondly, we happened to see a chalkboard side outside the front door when we walked in advertising a lunch prix fixe that allows you to pick a petits plats, a sandwich & dessert for $ 22. It was a fantastic deal for the value and we were pretty sold on that idea but when we asked we were told they only do it during week days. I’m not upset about the policy but rather the advertisement at the door that wasn’t applicable to that day. We were very happy with out meals but I do think they should write more details on the sign. I’ll be back in here to try another meal and some of those yummy drinks I saw — I loved the overall ambiance and experience.

We stopped in on a weeknight when our plans at another dog-friendly restaurant fell through. The staff was very friendly. They put us at a nice corner table — just right for my dog to feel secure. The food was excellent. We had the bone marrow app, sea bass and mussels.(I’m still searching for good, clean mussels here… These were tasty, but I wouldn’t order them again.) The sea bass dish was one of the best seafood dishes I’ve had here. We enjoyed the chocolate ganache torte for dessert and got out of there for less than $ 100. I love finding these gems in Chinatown. We will definitely be back.

I tried cassoulet for the first time here. The various meats had a nice, smoky flavor. It’s a bit pricey, but most of the dishes are large portions. I tasted my boyfriend’s duck and liked that a lot. We had two waitresses and the bartender was also the host, so that was confusing. One waitress forgot my wine, but the other one was really sweet. We walked in on a Thursday evening and were seated right away. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come back here, but would go back if friends wanted to.

Trés chic, modern, but down to earth. The food is very tasty and excellent. The servers are attentive, kind, and provided excellent service. I would definitely come back again to have breakfast here.

Wait staff is friendly and service is great! Came here for brunch and had the Blt, Norwegian Benedict(twice) and the crepes mole negro. Tried the ginger beer, pressed large coffee, North Hotel and dark n’ stormy. Ended with the French toast with a scoop of in house made coffee ice cream. Food was tasty but $$$ for the amount served.

For the meal you get the place is quite pricey. I had the«chicken sandwich» aka Pan Roasted Jidori Chicken — pommes de terre roti, rainbow carrots, sage beurre monte. Sounds fancy and nice huh? The taste was o.k., it’s not as if I was blown away. Would I give this place another shot? Maybe, if someone really wanted to go there but I think there are other places in Chinatown where you can get more bang and flavor for the buck.

After reading the reviews on Unilocal,we were keen to try Grondin. Upon entering, we were greeted with a very friendly welcome and allowed to sit anywhere. The wait staff all wore beautiful smiles, and were very approachable and accommodating. As the restaurant is small, it was easy to get their attention, too. We ordered the escargots, crêpe with duck in mole sauce with crème fraîche, fish of the day, and cassoulet with crostini. The escargots are served in a bowl, out of shell in a dark, savory reduction sauce with several slices of baguette. Not your typical escargots with garlic, herbs, and butter, but interesting interpretation, nonetheless. They were served lukewarm. I love escargot served in bubbling hot butter. 3⁄5 Crepes were delicately made. The pulled strips of duck in mole sauce were tender, and the crème fraîche added creamy, sweet fattiness against the mole sauce. Would have loved a bit more mole. $ 13 for 2 pieces is a bit expensive. Advice to chef, serve with a garnish of shredded carrots and parsley to add color and atmosphere. 3⁄5 Fish of the day was Monchong(pomfret) seared with a South American rub, plate decorated with a cold cilantro pesto, and served with a slaw of shredded veggies and cold vinaigrette, red potatoes. Fish was cooked perfectly on the bottom, slightly undersalted, and a bit overcooked on the top, which could have been a miscommunication on my side. One of the male servers told me that the fish would be served medium rare, and I asked for it to be cooked all the way through. 2⁄5 Cassoulet with white beans and pulled pork. Flavorful, but I found ours to be a bit on the salty side. Also, the white beans weren’t soaked/cooked long enough and therefore, were a bit chalky/mealy in the middle. Instead of serving just a lonely bowl of stew, wouldn’t it make sense to reduce the amount of stew(which the 3 of us couldn’t finish) and add a small portion of rice or risotto to soak up the juices? At $ 26, a bit on the expensive side, all things considered. 3⁄5 The crostini which accompanied the stew was plentiful, but I had a few pieces that seemed like they were covered in salt. Kitchen should be aware not to sprinkle too much salt on the bread when tossing. For $ 2, very reasonable! 3⁄5 Service 4⁄5. Friendly. Female wait staff seemed more knowledgable about dishes than male wait staff. Overall, our bill came to about $ 85 for 3 people, only 1 pint of beer ordered. Cost performance 3/5, just OK. Not a bad meal, but lots to improve upon.

When I used to work in downtown, I never knew about this place and I have walked pass it many times! Man I missed out on this place before but I had the chance to go for a friends bday dinner. We went on a Sunday night and it was half full. We made reservations for seven but two late stragglers decided they wanted to come so nine all together. The service was awesome! They were so accommodating and nice about it. They put some tables together and voila we all fit together in the middle of the restaurant. The food was delicious! We shared the appetizers family style and we all ordered our own entrees. The appetizers: Bone marrow: lots of delicious fatty goodness with bread lol. Charcuterie: a bunch of different spreads that go on bread lol. I suggest ordering this if you with a big group. Pâté, De foie, just eat it lol Market fish ceviche and prawn ceviche I personally liked the calms better. Escargots: it was good Entrees: we all took a piece of each others food. I got the chuleta, which is basically a pork chop but it was delicious! Omg! So juicy and tender! Duck breast: damm this was my favorite one that I didn’t order lol. It just melts in your mouth! If you like duck, get this one. Cassoulet: it was good but not my favorite. Sides: saffron rice, this is more of a Latin flair and it was pretty good! It comes with the chuleta Cultido: Latin slaw, it was salty and didn’t care for it too much. Overall, the food was delicious! It was kinda pricy so go for a special occasion. There’s also outdoor seating but we were too late. Maybe one day lol.

HIPSTERPARADISE. You can’t help but to notice the hipster vibe even before you walk in. Lots of fun décor to look at. I’m also told that there is a cute garden area out-back, which you access through the kitchen. Went one day for Brunch, which was a bit pricey. The food was okay, but the portions for some of the items were smaller than expected. NORWEGIANEGGSBENEDICT — smoked salmon, poached eggs, English muffin and hollandaise sauce. POMMEFRITES — skinny sliced and crispy. Delicious. HIBISCUSMIMOSA– Strangely chunky with a good flavor. I’ll stick with regular mimosas in the future. HOMEMADEICECREAM — best part of the meal. Since it was brunch and based on what I ordered I didn’t get the latin-french fusion that I wanted. I’ll give it another try for lunch or dinner to get the mixed flavor.

Celebrated our anniversary here last night and it was AMAZING! My goal this year to try as many new places as I can and of course share my experiences with you all. It is usually very difficult to find a «new» place to eat on a Sunday evening but thankfully Unilocal has made that one of the easiest searches. I saw this place and read the reviews on Unilocal(naturally). Thought it was something we could try out since we both like to try new things together. The first thing that was awesome right from the get go was that I received a phone call to confirm my dinner reservation for that evening. I cannot remember the last time a restaurant called me to confirm my dining reservation. I actually had to move it back a bit due to Superbowl, go figure. We arrived at Grondin, a little early than the modified time but were seated right away. Before we could view the menu, the waitress brought us two flutes of champagne in celebration of our anniversary. We were very impressed and must say this was different for us. I perused the menu online a little earlier in the week so that I would have an idea of what I may want to eat. The online menu and the actual menu were pretty spot on except for the daily specials of course. We ordered a bottle of Vini Pinot Noir, Charcuterie and Escargots for appetizers, Ratatouille and Steak Frites for our entrees. We also ordered a large French press coffee to keep us up for the drive home. Prior to our appetizers arriving, they served a palette cleanser which was a delight. The Charcuterie was very delicious! My husband is especially fond of the mustard seeds so that caught his attention really quickly. There was so much variety on the board and many different ways to enjoy the selections offered. The escargot surprised us a bit. We are used to having them in a circular dish in their own little compartments. It was a pleasant surprise when the escargots were served in a bowl on a plate with crostinis layed in a row. It was basically one escargot to one crostini. A perfect match! Our entrees came out and looked scrumptious. The steak frites was covered in the sauce au poivre with the pommes frites on the side. The ratatouille presentation did not mimic the movie but had a more realistic, relaxing take on it. The kale was seasoned to perfection and everything else paired nicely. It was so delicious that my husband even liked it. He ate some of my food when I went to use the restroom. Which was surprising as he is not a big kale fan. We were completely stuffed by the time we completed our meal. We sat for a while finishing our wine and then shared the large French press. I had a shot of bailey’s in my cup to give additional flavor. I can honestly say that it was a wonderful evening celebrating with my husband and the staff at Grondin. Their service is truly amazing! If you’re in the downtown/Chinatown area, stop in, order a drink and relax with a charcuterie board.

My friends raved about this restaurant! It was on my bookmarked list and I was so eager to finally try it. We booked our reservations via Open Table(love that app!) and off to Chinatown we went. Located on Hotel Street, near the famous hot-spots of Little Village, Lucky Belly and Livestock Tavern, the restaurant has the vibe of a cozy New York eatery. The hostess/waitress was very warm and inviting upon entering the restaurant and was excellent throughout our meal. Truthfully, my boyfriend and I weren’t familiar with French or Latin cuisine. Therefore, the menu seemed somewhat foreign to us. So we relied on our wonderful waitress for suggestions. We ordered: **Muchines — Yuca masa, queso fresco, local honey($ 8). Honestly this was hard to describe but it was on the sweeter side. The texture and flavor were different. **Market Fish Ceviche — Local citrus, herbs, chifles. The ceviche was tasty and tangy and the chifles reminded me of plantains. Nice, refreshing dish. **Pan Roasted Market Fish — Marinated potatoes, chayote and carrot salad, aji verde($ 25). The market fish that day was sea bass. We loved this dish! The fish was cooked to perfection and the sauces were delicious. **Side Dishes: **Ratatouille — Squash, eggplant, tomato confit, herbs, fingerling potatoes and kale($ 18). It was okay. **Local Kale — sautéed shallots and butter($ 6). This was okay too. **Dessert: One scoop of ice cream The waitress recommended their Duck Breast, Chuleta, and Cassoulet. We don’t eat meat but we saw that these dishes were popular amongst our fellow diners. Well, it was lovely meal but nothing was out-of-this world delicious. Had we’d been more familiar with French/Latin cuisine, we would’ve appreciated it more. It was definitely different… we’re glad we tried it!

I know this review is a little late, but I got to try Grondin with a friend during Restaurant Week and I am glad I did. I have actually never heard of the restaurant before. I think we chose Grodin amongst many other Restaurant Week restaurants because they seemed most reasonable deal for their price. The restaurant is really tiny, but I heard they have outdoor seating(according to Unilocal’s picture it looks beautiful), but I’m not sure where… Also, because it is located in Chinatown, you will have to find street parking or park in a municipal structure. We had dinner reservations at 5:30, so it wasn’t too busy yet. We ordered one dinner prix fixe menu and chose the Muchines as the appetizer, which I honestly did not know what to expect, and it is really hard to describe. It reminded me of butter mochi but with honey and more grainy texture. For the entrée we chose the Chuleta, which was described as «Shinsato Farms loin chop, saffron rice, spicy market greens, cilantro vinaigrette». We also ordered the Duck Breast separately. The loin chop was okay. I’m not a fan of chops, but the duck was really great. It was really juicy, with lots of flavor and very tender(especially compared to the chops). We ended our prix fixe menu with their house made chocolate ice cream(which was very rich), and vanilla. I thought it was nice that they gave us two ice creams, although we ordered only one prix fixe. I think Grondin is another great restaurant to add to Chinatown. Maybe next time I can try their lunch menu!

Latin French cuisine, wasn’t sure what to expect. A friend who was with me had been here before and told us what she had eaten from the menu. Before we embarked on this gastronomical journey we sat at the bar for a bit. Drew, the barkeep, took very good care of us and concocted some nice beverages for us while our table was being prepped. I decided to go with the Salade Frisée for starters. A hand-sized bed of frisée seasoned with smoked lemon and chives. The big(and happy) surprise for me with this selection was the house bacon. It was bacon like I never knew before. I was expecting some oh, say 2 mm thick strips, but oh no these were like chunks of lean, tender, smoky pork! I die. My friend opted for the Picadillo, a yummy spread of minced-spiced, grass-fed local beef, aji rojo and crispy, homemade yucca chips. We just had to give Crepes Mole Negro a chance. Shredded confit duck leg, Oaxacan mole, cilantro, lime crème fraiche tucked in light, delicate crepes. Three of these to an order. Yum. The Duck Breast was my choice of entrée. It was cooked just under medium rare at the recommendation of our server. Laced with a spiced honey gastrique, local kale with a carrot-ginger purée, this was nothing to quack at. But what really made taste buds sing was the Pan Roasted Jidori Chicken another friend ordered. I have never tasted such delicious roasted chicken. It was tender, tasty and served with pommes de terre rôties(roasted fingerling potatoes), rainbow carrots and a sage beurre monté(emulsified melted butter). I wanted more. But before I started poking my fork around I had to remind myself that it was my friend’s food. I finally refrained from eating everything off her plate. We managed to leave some room for dessert and shared the pistachio roll and a chocolate torte. They were both nice but nothing spectacular. I understand there is a $ 22 prix fixe lunch menu and will have to check it out sometime. Ambience is rather rustic, noise level is high, and it’s not a great place for large groups. We parked at the underground municipal lot on Pauahi and Smith, entrance on S. Beretania. The outdoor seating area was closed due to the rain, but I imagine it might be nice to try it the next time because I will go back… to get my own Jidori Chicken! P. S. I used Unilocal!to reserve and it worked out perfectly.

I’ve been wanting to try this place for quite some time and we finally went there on a Friday night. Being the super cool trendy couple that we are, we arrived right on time to our 5pm dinner reservation. Yup, 5pm, that’s how we roll. We were the first and only people there, until maybe 2 other parties arrived at around 5:30. We ordered: charcuterie — two types of pâté, some ham, pickles, homemade mustard, and some sliced baguette Escargots — snails and slice baguette Chuleta — pork loin chop, saffron rice over greens French fries I like the feel and vibe of this place, even the constant hum and hisses of the buses going on hotel street added to the vibe. It felt like we were at a restaurant in a big city. A good big city like San Francisco or New York or Vancouver. The charcuterie was pretty good. The pâté had a good saltiness and richness that was perfect on the bread. This may be weird to say but the only downside was that they gave too much pâté for just the two of us haha. With something that rich, you normally want a taste of it but not to load up on it. First world problems indeed. Oh yeah the homemade mustard was delicious! I’m a big mustard fan. The escargots(I always thought that escargot was like the word sheep. Whether it is 1 or many, it is still sheep, but turns out that escargots is correct) was also great! I think next time we would get either escargots or charcuterie but not both because they are somewhat similar in theme in that they are rich toppings you out on slices of baguette. I wonder what a bunch of baguette is called, is it «look at all those baguettes or look at all those baguette?» On to the chuleta. Perfectly cooked and tender. The only negative thing I would say was the pork was a bit under seasoned. I think a little salt would have brought out more of the flavors. Honestly though I’d rather err on less rather than more salt. Service was excellent. For dessert they had a special slice of ganache log I think. Or maybe a pistachio roll. It was pretty good but nothing stellar. The pistachio flavor was very muted because of the richness of the chocolate and it had a hint of mint to it(my girlfriend isn’t sure if it had mint) which muddled the flavor a bit. Don’t get me wrong, we ate the whole damned thing because it was still delicious, it just wasn’t incredible. We also got two scoops of ice cream: a dark chocolate and an apple banana. Both were very good but the apple banana ice cream tastes more like caramel than banana. I definitely will go back here to try more stuff, this is an excellent addition to downtown. Oh yeah, can one of you kind Unilocalers please take a photo of the wallpaper in the bathroom. My girlfriend wanted me to take a photo of the wallpaper but for some reason I thought she wanted me to take a photo of the small corner sink. You’ll see my awesome composition of the photo I took of the magnificent corner sink attached to this review.

Finally got to Grondin. It was last minute so we were really lucky to be accommodated. Street parking in Chinatown can be kind of sketchy, but again, we got lucky and found a spot on Smith Street. Our thoughts on Chinatown have always«don’t go there after dark»…but with the numerous«young» places popping up, we thought we’d «chance it»…glad we did. As we entered Grondin’s I noticed that most of the tables were taken. There was just a 2 top over on the right. I asked the gentleman if we could be accommodated for dinner that evening… and he had to check… then he came back and said he could. We quickly took our seat and started looking at the menu. I had no idea what French-Latin food would be like and normally my husband is not one to try new things… People were really friendly and helpful explaining the menu. We ended up with Fish ceviche with home fried plantain, clams for appetizers… both were excellent. I had the rack of lamb(special) and it was cooked to perfections… a little fatty, but still very good and my husband had the pork loin… very generous portion. We finished off with the chocolate ganache and the ice cream… I thought the desserts were kind of ordinary… I did not like the crust on the ganache and the chocolate ice cream tasted a little strange to me. French press coffee was very good. Although we enjoyed the meal, the music was quite loud… which require the people to speak loudly… all combined, I found the place to be noisy… the 5 stars is primarily for the food, but atmosphere… I prefer a little quieter.

Sometimes when that breakfast place you intended to hit up has a line out the door ten to fifteen deep, you tend to look elsewhere if your hunger has no patience. A lot of places were closed because it was a Sunday but we did find Grondin further down just opened and there was no line in sight. After being seated we ordered a drink to start the Sunday off. I ordered the Smokey Maguey. A Chile-infused Tequila with Mezcal, Aperol and lime sour. This drink is delicious and does pack some heat but not much. For breakfast we both had the Norwegian Eggs Benedict. The Eggs Benedict was very good. They did not douse the dish with hollandaise sauce and the eggs were poached perfect. I definitely love having Smoked Salmon instead of Ham or Bacon on any Benedict. We also ordered the French Toast to share which was excellent! For me, I have a habit of having a little French Toast with my syrup but in this case there was no need for anything extra added on. It was just perfect sweetness along with the Carmel walnuts and right amount of maple syrup. Knowing they use some local products in their meals means the support the local economy as well which always wins me over. Very friendly customer service and our waiter was nice enough to explain how easy it was to make our own Chile infused tequila if we wanted to make it at home. Your going to have to park somewhere and walk here just like any place else in Chinatown but don’t let that discourage you. It’s definitely worth it. I will be back because I have set my cross hairs other dishes to try out too. Update: 03÷04÷16 I have just tried the Cassoulet today and this just gives me another reason to come back here again. One thing I like about French cuisine is they make dishes simple but at the same time make it delicious. French style version of Portuguese bean soup! I never did care for macaroni or Portuguese sausage in it begin with.

For my birthday, my partner in crime had this genius plan to take me here for a surprise birthday lunch. I was really excited that this was the place! Grondin has been on my to try list for a while! We came in and it was a cute little eatery with French café décor. There was a full bar and cute little tables. The place was quaint, hipster and romantic all in one. Definitely a great place to have a nice lunch with a date. They take reservations on Unilocal,so make sure to take advantage. Customer Service was SUPERB! We were greeted and seated right away. The waitress assisted us in the menu items and made great suggestions. The two waiters actually tag teamed and we were helped by both with eager helpful smiles. The food was fabulous! I ordered the chicken sofrito sandwich and the salad frisse. The salad frisse was topped with a poached egg and it tasted great complimenting the fresh bacon it came with. I definitely tasted the French influence in the salad. My boyfriend decided on trying the machines and the charcuterie sandwich. I of course got a bite of each of his entrees and side.(what?! I had to for this review! ^_^*) the muchines had a course textures and was topped with honey. It went well and not overpowered by sweetness. We enjoyed it with the French pressed coffee. I loved the taste of the chicken sofrito the most. It is a smaller sandwich than the other choices, but it had the best flavor. It’s not a hot sandwich, it’s toasted. Which really surprised me that there was so much flavor. If you do order this, just be aware that it gets messy. It’s like a French sloppy joe. The price was moderate, it was around $ 8 — $ 22 for the lunch menu. They also use ingredients from the local farms right here in Hawaii! What a way to support buying local! Overall, this little hipster French-Mex café is now one of my favorite places to eat and enjoy French pressed coffee! It’s another great place to lounge while in Chinatown.

So we came to celebrate a friend’s bday. There were 11 of us and we put together a menu beforehand. There are large group menu options that you can choose three different appetizer and three different entrees. Also comes with side of veggies and rice. Finishes up with assortment of ice cream. Pretty solid. Must haves include the bone marrow and the duck. We also ordered the prawn ceviche, clams chorizo(order extra bread for broth dipping), and crepes mole negro. For entrees, we got the duck, super tender with a honey sauce that isn’t too sweet and complements the duck perfectly. The chuleta pork chops were juicy and the cilantro sauce was delicious and super herby(Is that a word?). Our final entrée was the monchong with a very slightly spicy aji verde(a green peruvian chili sauce). Served with saffron rice and sautéed kale. Dessert included house made ice cream. Apple banana ice cream. Yummers. Had to be rolled out of the restaurant tonight, so full.
