So upon driving into the back parking lot and the 3 of us saying… Huh? Where is the place and double checking the address we see a small red sign on the back of an old buss up door. oh well we are here so let’s see how it goes. We entered and were the only 3 people there other than the staff. ok well let’s order food. We ordered Goya with pork, fried chicken, poke, soybeans, Okinawa soba and shot u pork. Yes we were hungry! I wish I had taken pictures but I was hungry and my brother took the photos. But I didn’t get them from him. Sorry. Anyway everything was excellent !!! We ate most of it and only took home a couple pieces of chicken. We will be back very soon.

It’s always nice to be able to go back to a place and feel like you never left. That comfortable welcoming atmosphere as soon as we walked in brought a nice warm feeling(though that warm feeling could have also been the alcohol). FOOD: Poke(5⁄5), OMG this is definitely in my top 5 of best pokes that I have ever had in my life. I could try and explain it but I would do it injustice so you will just have to try it for yourself. Fried Chicken(5⁄5), DAMN this was broke da mouth good! The skin was nice and crispy that it was like crack because I didn’t want to stop eating it even after I was full. And the chicken itself was so moist and nicely seasoned. SERVICE: Absolutely good service! They were on the ball. Always stopping by, bring napkins & plates, seeing if we wanted anything else to drink, etc. I only wish more bars & restaurants were like this. PARKING: Huge parking lot in the back(this is also where the entrance is). We didn’t have a hard time finding parking. Even had security patrolling the area too! CONCLUSION: Will definitely be back!

Loved this hole in the wall Okinawan joint! Food was excellent and I’m just so into the relaxed laid back ambiance this place exudes. Will definitely be hanging here for da fried chicken and ahi belly!

I stopped in one day after not going here since the 1970’s. Same ambiance, same great Okinawan food(I think that they have the same cook all of this time), very gracious staff. A hang-out place. Yeah, I’m an old guy, but this still is a great place to eat and drink. Bring your kids, bring your grandkids, bring your girlfriend. It is all nice.

A great quaint place to relax and enjoy with friends and family… The Food — is awesome –Shoyu pork is something you cant duplicate so tender, and flavorful. Ahi Belly, Okinawa yakisoba, Champuru, and fried chicken. Food came quick with nice people surrounding the place. If I lived in Hawaii I would go there often and order up the whole menu… But make sure I have shoyu pork! Hope to be back soon! I was there with like 20+ friends and it was prolly the best way to end my trip to Hawaii!

I hesitated to review this place because one of the five best things about it is that it’s never overcrowded(depending on whether there is a game on tv). The other four: 1. fried chicken(everyone else is right about this) 2. goya champuru with shoyu pork 3. ahi belly nitsuke 4. mellow local patrons. (Actually, all of their food is pretty good. I know this because I actually have eaten everything on the menu!)

PORK. BELLAY! This place is SO divey and doesn’t look that great at all from the outside, but Unilocal brought me here with the food pics! There were 7 of us came on a Thursday night. There were only a couple people on bar, but a lot of people stopping by to get takeout. We ordered: — Shoyu Pork: melt in your mouth goodness with belly meat not too fatty or dry. The sauce was perfect. We had 3 orders! — Poke: amazingly fresh! — French Fries: so hot and fresh, definitely not from those old oil like a lot of restaurants do. — Fried Chicken: it was just okay, the only dish that didn’t get fully demolished that night. — Fried Saimin: yum! paired perfectly with shoyu pork. — Ribeye with Onion and Mushrooms: So good, portion was big. The service was attentive and fast. Our waitress was super friendly. Food came out super fast! Don’t let the outside fool you. This place is a hidden gem!

I come here strictly for the fried chicken but they have great poke and a good selection of beer. My friend likes dive bars and this place is one of his favorites If you do stumble into this joint make sure you order the fried chicken. It’s a must!

Got invited to this place for a meeting the other night. My friend and I weren’t exactly sure where it was so we parked somewhat far away and had to walk a couple of blocks to the restaurant. While walking down River street we were treated to a fair share of crackheads and a scuffle between some bums broke out while Securitas looked on and laughed. While we neared the restaurant a few more bums yelled at us from across the street. Much to our chagrin, we realized the place had it’s own parking lot. We definitely could have avoided a bit of an awkward trek if we had known that sooner. The building looks a little run down when you get there and it’s not entirely clear that the place is open, or if it even exists at all, when you first see it, but once you get in you’re greeted by an incredibly friendly staff and a comfortable, albeit slightly divey place. The food is great though. Especially the fried chicken and fries everyone is raving about. Tried some of their poke as well and that was also really good. All in all, the place is really good and since it’s a hole in the wall you won’t have to fight for parking or a table. Maybe the only fight you’ll have is with a bum if you park too far away. Avoid that problem and enjoy an awesome meal.

The fried chicken and French fries are great! Atmosphere is typical bar scene. Nothing fancy. Older group of people hang out at this bar. Whatever though, beer is cold; and food is good.

Pulled into the small parking lot and entered Hanagasa through a peeling and weathered door. This hole in the wall place is run down and kinda grungy. They were able to accommodate a large group(8 people). Unfortunately, we were seated next to a noisy group that was competing to see who could yell the F word the most times. :P Expect to have to yell to have a conversation in this place. I’m giving them 3 stars for the food. It was delicious and reasonably priced. I really enjoyed the fried chicken, furikake musubi, steak with mushrooms and onions, the tofu champuru with rafute(Okinawan shoyu pork), pork chops, and french fries. Course, it took an inordinate amount of time to get the food. So.. .can handle large groups, delicious food, and cheap prices. Oh! And it’s Okinawan. :) But.. .noisy, long wait for food, and really loud karaōke if you stay too late.

We tried to go here last night, since Unilocal told us they had great food, good service and karaōke! However, they were closed. The Hours of Operation sign said that they should have been open and it didn’t have any signs saying they’d moved or gone out of business. They were just dark and the door was locked. Previous Unilocalers had discussed whether or not they’re open in other posts. Unfortunately, they’re not. :(

Have made it here several times with friends on their Karaōke nights. They are still open and going strong. When you walk in, the place looks like a total dive but dont let that fool you. While the looks are not impressive they make up for it in their food and their service. I highly recommend going to get their fried chicken. I dont know what they do but it is excellent. Also another favorite is their chopped steak. As for service, the staff there is very naturally friendly. I would definately go back again and again!

I heard Hanagasa will be closing this summer since a new development will be going up in the location their building is. The owners will have to look for a new location. I better hurry up and get my fried chicken fix. The last time I went the waitresses were very attentive and nice. I’m going to give them one more star for that. But still no 5 star for it being kinda dirty.

One of my favorite hole in the wall places to eat! Very friendly service, and tasty food; all at a reasonable price. Sort of reminds me of how Side Street inn started out before they started charging $ 30.00 for fried pork chops. Location can be a bit sketchy so make sure to park in the parking lot behind, there is a security guard 24 hours. If good and simple food is more important to you than trendy atmosphere then this place is for you. Great old-time local restaurant and bar! My favorites are fried pork chops, pork tofu, Okinawan stir-fried bitter melon with pork, and shrimp tempura.

Used to go there often because I was living close by. It’s good Okinawan cuisine. Cook by proud local Okinawan. Awesome food, reasonable price. Better go there for lunch. Because at night, this restaurant become like, bad hostess bar or Karaōke place. I don’t know they still have sushi shack but I loved their fresh and cheap sushi!
