Before writing my review, I was looking at photos posted by Nadine C. Wow! I’m missing out! I should attend meetings with Nadine C. for«free food» from HGEA. LOL. your food looks good! & Nadine C. thanks for being so active & volunteering your time w/HGEA. I have been a member with HGEA, close to 10 years. I have no complaints @ all & I really am glad I am a member of this union. & being a member, means paying our union dues. that means, to make use of my union dues… I sign up for most events that HGEA has in store for members. Fun activities I look forward to: The family day at Wet & Wild Water Park, This is on Admission’s day, HGEA offers discounted admission for members & family along with a picnic lunch. — I go to this every year. =) The first UH football game for the season, HGEA offers discounted admission on tickets for members & family members. =) I remember getting the PRO-Bowl tickets @ 20.00, last February 2014. =) The Martin Luther King Parade. =) fun event with the fams. & upcoming event: Movie day, SPY movie on 6÷6÷2015. tickets cost 5.00 which comes with a 5.00 snack coupon. =) Besides these events, HGEA has movie tickets for sale, Consolidated(7.00) & Regal(8.00) I don’t buy the Consolidated tickets, but I think it cost 7.00 for them.- It is not good on new release. I normally buy the Regal tickets which is good on new release. The cost of movie ticket might go up, so I bought 10 this visit just in case it does. Beats getting them @ Costco, 2 for 16.79.(I was able to save time &79 cents.!!) The HGEA website has up to date info. on what is going on. ex. status of Unit 3. Don’t forget to set up an account & don’t forget to sign up for their email. (this is really helpful) You will also find a page that will have information on business discounts w/HGEA membership. (I remember using my HGEA card @ Angelo for 15% discount, I hope the new location will honor HGEA discount) Parking is located in the back of the HGEA Building, 5 «HGEA Reserved» stalls are available. Its a small parking lot & it can get crazy!(with the small amount of space for in/out cars) & they are located on the 4th floor. * If you are in the area, don’t forget to get your movie tickets.(they accept checks) I’m happy to be an HGEA Member! Thanks HGEA, Hawaii Government Employees Association.- its optional to join but I DO recommend joining this well known union.

It puzzles me that a few State employees decide not to be a member of our HGEA union. Our dues come right out of our paycheck, so it’s not as painful to join. I was always curious about the classes and events. My cousin is active in the poker tournaments and craft fairs. My mom used to be a steward until she got promoted into a management position. My friend at work is a steward and she asked me to join her, so I did. It has been a very interesting and educational experience. I have learned so much about Labor Laws, our contract, the Legislature, arbitration, grievances, etc. The added incentive to go to class is the meal and gift with HGEA logo! Next month, I will be attending General Assembly for the second time. It’s an eye-opening gathering of State Employees from all of the Bargaining Units. Last time, the guest speaker was the mayor of the Big Island and this year, Mayor Billy Kenoi will be welcoming us again. It amazes me how big this event is and how well organized everything is. Our Union Agents have been outstanding. I appreciate how they really listen to us and try to understand our complaints and why seemingly little things are important to us. They have come out to our hospital during our Midnight Shift to meet our members and bring us a pizza snack! Seeing them fight for us at meetings has been an extra benefit of being a Union Steward — I feel like they really earned their pay and that my dues are being put to good use. There are many events to keep us busy. Sign waving; marching in the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade; helping at the food booth during Children & Youth Day at the State Capitol; and canvassing a neighborhood have been kind of fun. I always enjoy the snacks that they provide for the volunteers. The monthly meetings have been invigorating. It helps me to know that other nurses on the island of Oahu are struggling, too. I’m also a Board Member, so I get to meet nurses from the neighbor islands — they’re wonderful! We’re all in it together and have similar goals. When we pull together, our voices unite and we can hopefully get the Governor to sign our funding bill sooner!
