So sad that closing HK’s made us go back and try different things on the menu. The food here is awesome! We tried the: Teri burger Grilled snapper sandwich Fried noodles Chicken Katsu Yum Yum Chicken (all within two days). All very tasty, fresh and reasonable priced. Soo good, soo sad … I wish the owners the very best in their retirement but secretly hope you come back out of retirement soon …

It’s so hard to say goodbye… to the BEST Teri hamburgers & fried noodles ever :( I very rarely eat red meat, but HK’s hamburgers are SOGOOD that… ok, I’ll admit it… I dream about it sometimes! They’re perfectly cooked and filled with juicy goodness! And of course, everyone knows about their famous fried noodles with the secret dashi sauce! I always find myself having«just one more bite»…then another… and another… Today, on their last day of business, I was lucky enough to get the fried noodles(yay!)…but I did not get there in time for one last Teri loco moco plate. Sigh, I guess I really will have to dream about it now :( Thank you HK’s for the onolicious plate lunches throughout the years. You will be missed by many!

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER28, 2001 — HK’S LASTDAY!!! Saw on the news that HK’s was closing, and that their last day was today. I had to go down and have one more meal before they closed. Got there at around 10:30AM(thinking I was early), boy was I wrong! Waited 15 minutes to order, 30 minutes for my food. NOFRIEDNOODLES!!! Very sad about that, since that is my all time favorite at HK’s. Instead got the Yum Yum Chicken and a Teri Hamburger Steak plate. It was good, but I surely wished I had their fried noodles, they will be dearly missed. Thank you HK for 30+ years, although I only found you several years ago, I wished you were around longer. Oh, and if you plan to go there today, plan on waiting a while, and also beware that they might run out of food before the day is done(as one of the workers mentioned as I got my food).

Nothing wrong about giving place 5 stars right before they close… because they deserve it. Yes I’m back on the Unilocal wagon(for now) because I had to say I’m sorry HK’s, I’m sorry I didn’t discover your amazing teri burger until last night. It is the best teri burger I’ve ever had. So simple, but yet so tasty(and pretty cheap). I will be sad to let you go. What a tragic ending… but alas, HK’s is open 9⁄27 until 7:30pm and 9⁄2810am to 7:30pm, so all is not lost(unless they run out of food first). You know where you’ll find me… I’m sad to admit that it took the announcement of their closing to get me out of my comfort zone(the most variety I can say is that I’ve ordered fried noodles with chicken katsu, yum yum chicken or teri chicken, ok and maybe 1 plate of chicken cutlet or something) over the past umpteen years… I think I started coming here back in the 1990s. Wow, I long for those days of youth and oodles of HK’s fried noodles, but I digress… I’m not ashamed to say that I went to HK’s twice all in less than 24 hours this week. And might I add, I still have some leftover HK fried noodles with Yum Yum Chicken sitting in my fridge… is it the last of it’s kind? It’s nearly extinct. Oh sad. And just in case it wasn’t clear, the fried noodles are still my favorite. But they just now have to share the stage with the teri burger and FRIES(the fries were a recent discovery as well – hot, thick and so tasty). At least for another 2 days. Sigh. HK’s: thank you for all the years of yumminess and we’ll miss you dearly!

Very sad that this place is closing. We just discovered it. Solid hamburger and teri burger. Fried saimin comes with a flavorful dashi sauce, which is definitely something different. They also had the best fries I’ve ever had. If you’re reading this after September 2011, you missed a great place!

What’s there to be said? It’s a sad, sad day to find out that HK’s is closing. From high school time, HK’s was a staple. The introduction to HK’s, when finding that you could actually put something other than teri beef on top of fried noodles, and that the little container of dashi wasn’t for the meat … to the numerous runs out during the long lunch breaks between classes and work @ UH Manoa … to the occasional kanak attack during the hour-long lunch break at work … to paying forward the knowledge of where to pick up good fried noodles to the Moiliili newbies — «What do you mean, YOU’VENEVERBEENTOHK’S???» HK’s fried noodles has long been one of those«go-to» places whenever in need of a good, filling plate lunch. With the fillet of chicken katsu I’d always get, the noodles were always satisfying. Not feeling chicken katsu? Try teri beef. Or BBQ chicken. As times have changed, HK’s has stood by as a cornerstone of Moiliili plate lunching(except for that short period they were closed for a few months). Now … not so much. Later days, HK’s … you will be missed! (cash only … and only until 9.28.2011)

HK has one of the juiciest burgers I’ve ever tasted! I’ve ordered their Deluxe Burger, Fries(good ol’ fashioned crinkles!), Saimin(basic but still good), Fried Noodles(Thanks to my friend John) with a side of Teri Chicken *Make sure to use the broth/sauce they give you, and today I ordered the Hawaiian Deluxe Plate. Although it wasn’t for me, it seemed like a pretty good deal for only $ 9.55 you get Pork Lau Lau, Chicken Long Rice, Kalua Cabbage, Lomi Salmon, and the choice of Rice or Poi. *Brown Rice AVAILABLE! CHEAPEATS! Everyday they have a white board menu of daily specials so make sure you check it out. Friday’s Specials: Hawaiian Plate:

This is one of the better plate lunch places around town. It’s been there for ages. I’m a big fan of the fried noodles with the BBQ chicken. The BBQ chicken is one of the best I’ve tasted. Even though I don’t care for the fact that they leave the skin on, I’m guessing that’s why the chicken is so moist and full of flavor. No brown rice here(which is unfortunate) because they have daily specials like pork and squash which has to be eaten with rice, but now that I’m older, I have to pass on it. Maybe when they finally realize that white is out and brown is in, I’ll be back on more occasions since I’m always in the area. *Cash Only*

After our awesome office tour of American Savings Bank we were hankering for lunch and one of our friends suggested HKs. I didn’t know it was so close to UH. So my friends suggested to get the fried saimin. I’m glad I went with their suggestion. The food was surprisingly good and I was glad it came with a choice of meat. Not to mention, the container that you pour over the noodles to make it taste so so right. Overall, the food was bomb, the service was fast and friendly, prices were fair. Excellent place to get your nomnom on.

I had to look at other Unilocal reviews to decide what to order when pulling up into the little 3 space parking lot. I arrived at 10:50 am so there was only one person in line(other than me and my friend) that enjoys going early enough to beat the long lines of other hungry patrons. I would have ordered the curry but on this day the special was hamburger curry. I like hamburger in my meatloaf or in my burger but I decided against it in my curry. I would have gone for the beef curry dish but that is not until next week. So then I decided on the fried noodles and I knew exactly what to do with the«little container» that accompanied my noodles according to fellow Unilocaler Emily T.. I usually smell things before I eat them but this time I did not … I just opened the container and poured it all around my noodles like I was puttin out a fire and proceeded to mix the noodles and sauce up and down the hatch. The noodles had some chopped green onion with kamaboko and lunch meat cut into fine julienne strips and it was all very good! There was a slight sweetness to the noodles but nothing I could put my finger on other than a little mirin. If I had first smelled and tasted the sauce before dumping it on my noodles … I might have had a better clue on the ingredients. Its is an old rule that you taste the dish first to determine if it needs anything before adding to it. You may enjoy the organic flavors of the dish without the additives. I know my daughters could eat noodles for breakfast lunch and dinner so this would be a winner dish for them. I had the teri chicken that was placed on top of the noodles… at first glance it looked dry but after cutting it and biting into it … it was moist and delicious. The service was excellent. I did not order a drink but the lady put a cup of water on my tray with out asking for it. It is nice when you have someone that can anticipate and react your needs. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating. We decided on outdoor because it was a nice day and each bench was shaded… see photo. They are building a new Longs drugs across the street in the old star market location so that will make it easier to pick up a few household items after your belly is full.

I was sent to HK’s by a friend to try the fried noodles. But here I’m thinking, «I’ve had fried noodles before, how these be THAT good?» I was wrong. It’s pretty dang good. Even my dad was eating off my plate. Somehow the noodles are just different and the BBQ chicken on top was a nice touch. Also, FYI… they give A TON curry if you order the beef curry plate. See my picture if you’re not a believer.

Dudeeee! This is THE place for fried noodles. I would comment on the rest of the menu but I don’t think I’ve ever ordered anything but fried noodles. With BBQ chicken on top. Om NOMNOM. So gooooooooood! One last thing… parking at First Hawaiian is dangerous(sup tow trucks). Don’t do it if you don’t have to!

Still mourning the loss of their yummy chicken nishime from their Tuesday’s lineup but can’t complain — that’s more fried noodle with bbq chicken for me! Something about the sweet-savory taste of that noodle dish that is habit forming. Oh yes, their fries are good too though I now trek over to the newly opened Teddy’s on S. Beretania for my shake and fries fix.

Ate fried min with hamburger steak. Good Portion and tasty fried noodles for just $ 7.50. Noodles are startchier but that is what makes it different and good. Burger is charred and has that yummy grilled taste

Serioulsy yummy Mom & Pop plate lunch place — my faves are: hamburger steak, fried noodles w/chicken, teri beef or katsu, chicken hekka, spaghetti, ahi(prepared in all diff ways)…basically, pretty much everything is delish here! Parking is limited so I usually call in my order to ensure you get it quick. The service is great — everyone is so nice & friendly. And biggest thing of all besides yummy food, the prices are so reasonable! Great food for a great price — da best! p. s. there are specials daily, so you probably wanna check those out!

1. Hamburger(4.5 stars) This burger was really good. Pretty basic and fresh. Reminded me of In-N-Out. There was some amazing sauce in the meat that was really ono. It usually comes with lettuce, mayo, and mustard. I always ask for it without the mayo or mustard. 2. French Fries(4.5 stars) The fries are really fresh. They were just about perfect. Crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. A little bit pricey, but you get your money’s worth. I had a burger, fries, and large coke for less than $ 6. In addition the the picnic table outside, there is even a little inside seating area that is easy to miss. If you can’t find parking, then just park at the First Hawaiian parking lot. Pretend to use the atm or walk through the bank so the guard doesn’t give you any trouble. I did not notice any vegetarian entrees. Vege food seems limited to local sides like mac salad, rice, french fries, etc. I have never tasted any MSG here.

All I have to say is… Yum Yum! Lol…Yum Yum Chicken that is. This is a special 2 times a week. The Konishi family sure can cook. Most times when i go there, the parking situation can be a problem. Hint: I park in the First Hawaiian Bank parking sometimes.

We headed over here around dinner time and was able to find a parking space right in front. Usually we can’t find one in this area, so we were pretty lucky this time. I ordered the hamburger steak plate and my girlfriend ordered the sweet and sour spareribs plate. We got our order to go and one of the first things I realized was that with only two plate lunches in styrofoam, the bag was fairly heavy. My hamburger steak was really good. It had a great flame broiled taste and was very tender and soft. Although the gravy really didn’t add anything to the plate. It was too light tasting. The macaroni salad was pretty good and it came with two scoops of rice. The spareribs were good although it was a bit dry on the inside. I think that sweet and sour spareribs should be cut smaller in order to prevent the inside from drying out. Overall though, the food was good. One of the great things is we got both the plates for around $ 14 total. Although we had takeout, there is a nice outdoor place to eat as well as a indoor eating area opposite the outside one. As a side note, we saw Robert Kekaula(KITV Sports News Anchor) chowing down here. So you know it’s gotta have some good local food.
