Ka Lei Eggs

No luck in hunting for Ka Lei eggs in Chinatown Court @ Kalihi City Square. Only found Island Fresh Eggs and mainland eggs sold in a refrigerator cooler. No service at all and there was no one shopping or browsing in this section. Mostly others were at the vegetables section and making purchases. Still looking for Ka Lei eggs but I have a feeling that it will be non existent to find on a wholesale purchase. Reading a previous thread that owner, Lois Shimabukuro, is leaving the business. The patriarch, Gary Shimabukuro, had passed away couple of years ago. Just this past February 2015, Ka Lei eggs closed the Kaimuki outlet, which was convenient for us to go but no more. I would love to go to Peterson’s but too far in Wahiawa. Looks like, Aloha Ka Lei eggs for the eggs that we’ve eaten through the years! Will check the Kalihi Street outlet if still operating.

Go to the Waiakamilo Road outlet (419 Waiakamilo Road.) My review is there and so happy to find the last of the Ka Lei eggs outlet in town. Kalihi Street outlet closed since March 2015. There is a small sign that Ka Lei eggs moved. (HAPPY DANCE!)

Fresh local eggs… you can’t beat that! Young lady that checked us out was super nice and pleasant (contrary to some of the other vendors). If you use A LOT of eggs you can by 2 dozen and get the 3^rd free, not sure how long the offer lasts.

I had strict instructions to buy local fresh eggs for a project I’m working on.
BUY LOCAL
Why? The eggs arrive on the shelves the day after they pop out, and they aren’t sprayed with a protective coating like mainland eggs. When you buy them straight from Ka Lei, they are comparable in price to mainland eggs in the market.
GRADE A or GRADE B
Grade A eggs are the ones that you find in the stores. Grade B are the eggs that may have some bumps on the shells, hairline fractures, or could be stained a bit. Grade B eggs are good for scrambling, baking, or frying, but NOT good for hard boiling. You get a better deal if you buy Grade B eggs — I bought a tray of them and got several extra extra large eggs. These are like the «seconds» or «imperfect» eggs but it all ends up in the same place so it doesn’t matter what they look like for this project.
BY THE DOZEN
The prices here are by the dozen, and they come out slightly higher than the prices at the Kalihi store (which sell them by trays of 30). I think she said it was due to the packaging (?).
LOCATION
This (their THIRD!) location just opened on Sept 7^th and is one of the vendors in the Chinatown Market Place in City Square on Dillingham Blvd, right next to Chuck E. Cheese.
