Imported Hokkaido crab means really expensive imported crab! Not the usual imitation crab. Location: Shirokiya, Yataimura Food Court on the 2nd floor. It’s right across from Maguro Zanmai. It started out as a large counter loaded with expensive crab bentos. Some were over $ 20. Now it is a much smaller counter with more scaled back bentos and smaller items at a much lower price about $ 5 to $ 16 max. Food: The bentos include pieces of crab on rice and cabbage with salmon eggs/Ikura as a garnish. Now they have some futomaki crab rolls which are less than $ 10. Quality is excellent. Nicely prepared with great flavors. I’m giving them 4 stars on taste and quality. These are nice treats if you are a fan of fresh crab. But, they are at a premium price. The futomaki @ $ 4.85 are very reasonably priced though. I like them for a quality light lunch that you can’t find anywhere else. Price competition: At Shirokiya customers are generally looking for a cheap lunch. Even if I were to spend $ 25, I would go across the way and get the sushi platter at Maguro Zanmai. I think the demand for this speciality item is a bit limited when there are so many very low priced delicious items near by. Fierce competition! Vegetarian: Unless you are pescatarian there are no options for you here.

Kitanoya at Shirokiya: Located where Tonkatsu Ginza Bairin used to be, in front of Maguro Zanmai and Takoyaki Yama Chan. We have been enjoying their crab and salmon roe bento every week these days. A bit pricy but so far, we are totally satisfied with their bentos. I visited the original Kitanoya in Sapporo a couple of times in the past. I was not impressed there like bentos here. Probably due to I had my better choice restaurants for crab dishes in Sapporo.

This place is more like a 3.5 for me. I tried out the infamous $ 26 dollar king and snow crab bento. Supposedly the crab is from Hokkaido, which is why its so expensive. To me, it tasted like snow and king crab that I could have found anywhere else. Was it good? Sure. Was it worth the $ 26? Not really. I was a little disappointed that the rice was on the hard side. Not what I was expecting from a bento with that high of a price tag.
