«The mini park of Waikiki» Nestled away in the urban sprawl near the corner of Kuhio ave and Liliuokalani street is a small public park known officially as «Kuhio Mini Park No. 2». Just 5,500 square feet in size, it was once a haven for the undesirable elements of Waikiki. But in 2012, the community got together and decided to change this eyesore into a small urban oasis in the Jungles of Waikiki. Although owned by the city and county of Honolulu, much of the upkeep is done by dedicated volunteers. A beautiful mural rings the perimeter of this little park and there is a low rock wall through the interior to sit and enjoy a respite from the concrete jungle. More of a passive park, I would encourage others to visit to see how urban blight can be transformed into a gem for the visitors and residents of Honolulu. (Note: Visiting during daylight hours is recommended and as is always the case, be aware of what’s happening around you. Pay attention to the posted sign which shows when the park is closed-11:30pm to 5am as of May 2015. There is no parking either although there is a covered bus stop right in front of the park. If you look on Facebook under«Kuhio Mini Park Beautification Project«you will get a more detailed account of the transformation that took place as well as the story that the mural along the walls of the park is reciting.) Someplace to visit and enjoy when taking a stroll in Waikiki.
