Kuni Island Fabrics

I came here at 7:00pm walking from the hotel. The listed times say open till 8pm but when I arrived the place was closed with a «special hours» sign on the window. They should update there hours of operations if they want people to not be disappointed as I was.

My husband and I signed up for sewing classes here at Kuni Island Fabrics.
Before signing up with Kuni, I did some research on the other sewing classes around the island. We chose Kuni Island Fabrics because of the class times, cost, and location. Also because a friend of ours referred them to us a while back.

We called about 2 weeks before classes began and was able to reserve 2 seats for Monday classes at 5:30pm for the month of June (make sure to sign up ahead of time because seats fill up fast!!). We went into the shop the next day to pay for our classes. After paying, we were given a list of supplies needed on the first day. It was just a few general sewing supplies such as measuring tape, pins, pin cushion, etc.
We got most of our supplies from Walmart, except for the Bernina bobbins (the sewing machines are Bernina). I highly recommend buying the bobbins from Kunis. It is very hard to find at other stores!
We got our fabric from Fabric Mart and was ready for our first day! We were both a bit nervous because we are both completely new to sewing.
On our first day, we arrived about an hour early and parked behind the building (it is good to come early because there are tandem stalls and single stalls, you wanna get the single stall) We walked into Kunis and we were greeted by our teacher (Amy) and she told us we could put our things upstairs (Sewing classes are held upstairs, retail downstairs).
We went to get a bite to eat and returned a few minutes before class started. Some of our fellow classmates were already there. Everyone was so welcoming and very nice!
Our teacher Amy was very helpful! We even brought in our personal serger so she could thread it for us! You can bring in anything you want to complete within the 4 – 5 classes in the month. My husband finished his first project very quickly which he didn’t expect to so he was thrilled to start working on other things he thought he wouldn’t have time for! If you didn’t have any projects in mind, they had a variety of kits to choose from downstairs! If you have a questions, just ask! Amy is very knowledgeable and will lead you on the right path.
After the first class was over, we went out and bought ourselves a brand new Brother sewing machine. We didn’t want to stop sewing!
As the classes went by, everyone was very friendly and helpful. It was also fun to hear about what the others did during the week and to see all of the different creations made by each classmate. They would bring in goodies for us to munch on during class which was so thoughtful!
Overall it was a great experience! We both always wanted to learn how to sew and now we know the basics of sewing! I would highly recommend Kunis sewing class to anyone interested in sewing!

I went in for fabric. Found a great selection of oriental pieces. Went with my boyfriend, who was followed around the store (as if we were going to steal), he does not sew, I do. He asked the lady a couple of question, she seemed bothered by his questions. One in particular is that he asked if this was related to the old Kuni’s we all know and loved. She curtly replied that this store is different. Pointing out the difference in name, Kuni island fabric and not Kuni dry goods. Look lady, if you don’t want people asking about the old Kuni’s, why in the world did you name your store that! (unless you were trying to profit off of something that was really good even though it wasn’t yours!) Customer service is lacking in there… I expected better service from someplace that you can only take about 20 steps into… May or may not be back.

Excellent place to take sewing classes. The old school «get in there» feel of learning to sew was perfect for me. I was absolutely amazed to learn so quickly. I would highly recommend going here to learn to sew.

I love this place! Yes they are limited in their choices of fabrics, sewing supplies etc., but the Aunties that work there are so cute!
I don’t come here for the supplies, I come here for the sewing classes!
Being one of the younger ones there, I signed up for a 5 week sewing class and it was my first time ever trying to sew!
It was SO fun! The teachers there are very patient, guide you step by step and let you know what needs to be done and help you all along the way! I have become addicted to making all my own projects and have a room filled with various cute fabrics now!
Can’t wait to go back! It definitely gets addicting and rewarding knowing you can make your own adorable things to use :)

I’m a man. What do I know about a fabric store? Well, here’s my story:
Halloween was rapidly approaching and I was fully committed to dressing as a Master Sushi Chef for the festivities. I needed a Master Sushi Chef outfit and I didn’t have time to order one online.
Towards the beginning of my search, I learned the keystone of the Master Sushi Chef outfit is called a happi coat. …whatever… I couldn’t find one. I went to and/​or called all of the many places that were suggested to me: no happi coat happiness was to be found. I even resorted to calling random Buddhist temples. I learned, they do sell Happi coats; but only at the beginning of Bön Dance season, which apparently does not correspond with Halloween no matter how much I wanted it to or how much it sounds like it should.
I was on the verge of giving up when my genius wife said, «I’ll call Terri at Kuni Island Fabrics. I bet she can help you.» And help me she did: Terri showed me several «oriental» fabrics that she said would be appropriate for making a happi coat. She helped me choose the right one, and the right trim fabric to go with it. She took my measurements and charged me a very reasonable price for the fabric.
Two days later and just before the biggest Halloween party of the year, I went back to her shop and picked up my very own professionally hand-​crafted custom-​made happi coat. I again paid a very reasonable price; this time for the labor.
My Master Sushi Chef costume was a big hit for Halloween, and I owe it all to Terri at Kuni Island Fabrics! Okay yes, and to my genius wife for sending me there.
