Mrs Cheng’s Soy Bean Products

The tofu cheese is nice. Dense, with a seasoned crust. The soft tofu is ok. The soy milk is fresh and tasty. Service is friendly. Facilities are very basic.

Good tofu fa. It’s right next door to Kahai Street kitchen in the industrial area of Kalihi. We go on Sunday so parking is not a problem. They sell different tofu products — tofu, soy milk, and my favorite tofu fa. They charge a little for the simple syrup to pour on it. English is clearly not their first language but if you know what you are ordering it is no problem. I love the tofu– very soft and smooth.

Mrs. Cheng’s tofu is an awesome local factory tucked away in Kalihi. You can get their tofu products in most supermarkets, but if you make the trek to their factory it’s so fresh (and a bit cheaper)!

There’s no funny aftertaste and all products actually have a nice, fresh, refreshing taste not always a characteristic of other brands.
Purchase the following soy items from this factory at very reasonable prices:
— Soy milk, plain or maple syrup; two sizes, half gallon (best deal) and a smaller size

— Tofu, soft or firm; sealed packs
— Tofu, firm in a bag (best deal); must replace water beginning the day you get it home.
— Tofu cheese — IDK what it’s called but it’s a harder, more solid form of their tofu product. Some ppl use it as a cheese substitute.
— Tofu pudding
It’s a silky smooth dessert-​grade version of their tofu products. Eat it with honey!
Business hours:
The posted business hours say they’re closed at 6pm but I’ve noticed that they’re there long after. If you are in the area craving soy products, try stopping by. If you’re nice, I’m sure they’ll be happy to sell to you. I’ve been there about 8pm and they were still open.
If you love and enjoy tofu products as much as I do, you’ll probably become as addicted to this place as .me! Teehee! :)

If you love soy products, you gotta try this place! I tried their soft tofu with maple syrup… DELICIOUS!!! Parking is bad though, but I just double parked, and ran in and out, and it was fine.

Only one dollar per pound of the tofu fa dessert if you bring your own container and they make it fresh in your container! Their soy drink is also sold in Safeways, super convenient!

Someone gave me the soft dessert like tofu with sweet syrup! I’ve never had anything like this before. This toful is amazingly fresh, and the syrup is delicious! I am definitely a fan, and am making my way there over the weekend!!! Definitely a 5 star rating!!!

Little hidden factory that sells amazing soy milk, tofu & tofu dessert! Theee best you can get. Fresh & tasteful! Small parking, but it’s a stop & go! …never loved tofu till I was introduced to Mrs. Chengs! :)

Discovered these guys this morning. Soft tofu (pudding kind with syrup), plain soy milk, sweet soy milk. All absolutely fantastic and very organic. The employees are also very helpful and offer great customer service.
Parking is a little difficult because they only have a very small store front (looks like they provide to half the places that serve soy products in the city, so they’re mostly for wholesale). But, you can either park behind another car in their front parking area (which is what we did) or along the street.

Tucked away in this industrial neighborhood is a little gem called Mrs. Cheng’s. They specialize in tofu, tofu pudding, and soy milk. Once you enter, it’s basically a tofu factory, all machines, coolers, and no nonsense employees.
Don’t be intimidated, though, as the their soy milk is fabulous. I tried the maple syrup one and it’s great — not overly sweet and fresh. I can’t wait to get their pudding and tofu in the future!

Hard to get a chance to be off on weekday, but whenever it happends, I go there to get a silky Tofu aka Tofu Pudding! This Tofu self has no sweetened. They usually give a syrup and then it suddenly turns a Tofu dessert! I like to uses my own maple syrup. Both are just good.

I can’t believe I never wrote a review on Mrs. Chengs, because this place is a small tofu factory that is only known by word of mouth. When I crave for the freshest tofu, I take a detour from Nimitz to Kalihi street to buy it straight from them. Since it’s a factory, as I step into the door, the floor is sometimes puddled with water and it’s amazing watching them work hard packing the tofu right before my eyes, and oh, when eaten right away, it tastes so reFRESHing!
Hard Tofu — 5 stars — Great with ramen or eaten alone.
Soft Tofu — 5 stars — this is the best I’ve always eaten because it’s straight from the factory. Can’t eat it later than a week or it’ll turn sour or taste like those sold at the grocery stores. I love it just by itself when eaten right away, and even better with somen sauce.
Tofu Fah (?) — 5 stars — a really really soft tofu sold in a tub to be eaten in a bowl. Ask for the brown sugar syrup to mix it with this tofu to eat it as dessert, and it tastes just like almond float.
Soy Milk — 4 stars — tastes more like tofu than milk, so my kids don’t like it as much, but it’s really fresh.
The only bad thing I can say about this place is that they are open only until 6pm Sunday through Friday, but more like 5:30 — 5:45pm, so it’s hard to catch them if you work late and you need to drive directly home to refrigerate it since it’s perishable, oh and I think they take CASH only.

My mom’s been buying tofu products from this factory for a long time, so this place is something of a gold standard against which I judge many other soy products. Needless to say, I love pretty much everything here.
The soy milk has a fresh, clean taste – something I’ve only ever been able to find in Asian soy milks. I find a lot of the non-​Asian soy milks (Silk, 8^th Continent, etc.) to have a stronger bean-​y flavor to me, but for some people I know they find it just the opposite, so I think it’s really an individual taste thing. This is the only soy milk I’ve ever found sweetened with maple syrup, and it is divine with just the right amount of sweetness! In fact, I buy unsweetened soy milk where I live and sweeten it with maple syrup to replicate this since I don’t live in Hawaii anymore.
The nigari tofu (doufu gan) is firm, as mentioned by others, and fries up extremely well. It’s also great fresh/​uncooked with a little drizzle of soy sauce (or even just plain – I will eat a whole block of this stuff cold and as is if you leave me alone with it). Both my dad and I are big fans of the tofu scraps (dou bian), which aren’t as firm as the nigari, but definitely more dense than the firm tofu and just… has a really good bite to it in stir fry or even in soup. I think you need to try it to understand the difference, but it’s definitely worth a go!
If you’ve never had tofu pudding (dou hua), definitely try it. My family likes to eat it hot with the ginger syrup it comes with, but I also enjoy it cold. It’s delicious! :D

Being vegetarian/​vegan, I got to love the tofu! After I moved away from San Diego, home of the super firm soy dairy tofu (resistant to breaking apart during cooking), I was feeling doubtful about finding a suitable replacement anywhere else. But Mrs. Cheng hooks me up with the super firm tofu! Usually get mine at Down to Earth — not sure about other location sources. Haven’t visited this factory location yet — curious about the other soy products including the tofu dessert.

Thier chunky nigari tofu can’t be beat! it’s ridiculously firm and fries up with minimal oil. They claim they sell it at foodlands in honolulu, but I have yet to find it anywhere except chinatown.

I’ve been coming to the factory with my girlfriend after her friends took us there. You wouldn’t be able to tell it’s there unless someone told you, but man am I glad someone did.
Now, I do not have a palatte that can differentiate between tastes in soy products. But I do know that the soft tofu they produce has a great texture. It’s soft and silky and goes down smooth with no strong soy taste.
They also have a dessert style tofu with maple syrup. This reminds me of the «taho» tofu dessert from the Philippines. But the tofu again is silky soft, but goes really well with the maple syrup.
Now, Mrs. Chengs soy milk is a bit different. As opposed to the soy milk from your local grocery store, this soy milk actually tastes like soy. Not a great thing for me since I’m used to the sweetened soy milk. But they do offer a sweetened soy milk infused with a little maple syrup. Before you think disgusting, soy milk and maple syrup, it actually tastes good. The hint of soy is still there in the soy milk, but the sweet balance from the maple syrup actually does it well. Not as sweet as the processed soy milk, but it will do.
Try to find it, google it if you have to. It really is good soy product. There’s also a good restaurant across the street from there as well. Check it out.

A couple of years ago I developed mild lactose intolerance – bizarre because I grew up drinking 3 glasses of milk a day. Don’t ask me how I found out because it’s a gross story. Haha. Anyway, I’ve been discovering the joy of soy since at this small mom-​and-​pop factory.
The soy bean flavor in the products are clean and subtle – plus, there’s no unpleasant aftertaste. You can buy the creamy yet light, smooth soy milk sweetened or unsweetened. The tofu pudding is simply delicious when you add sugar syrup and ginger like in Hong Kong cuisine. My mom likes the nigari tofu, which not only looks firm but tastes fresh unlike some other local brands at the supermarket.
This place also makes a few other products, all of them incredibly cheap. The owners work really hard, and I’m so glad stores like this are still in business. It makes supporting local businesses very easy!
