Nippon video is not as good the video shop/bookstore that used to be in this same building a few years back. It’s now a kind of weird mixture of half video half thrift store. There is one rack of magazines. In this day and age and Internet capabilities, I guess Japanese people just don’t know or care to get the movies or TV shows on their own, which keeps these video stores open. The rates to rent are cheap, but a buck or two for each episode does add up. What I can’t comprehend is the prices for their movies. None of them are originals, they are 1000% bootleg copes with badly printed covers, yet sell for $ 15 – 25 a pop. Pretty crazy. Oh well, I guess the market dictates the prices and someone out there must be paying. I ended up just going through the used section, and picking out some variety shows I like. They were taped up in packs of 5 DVDs, one or two episodes per DVD. The price was originally $ 10 per pack, but because they are a year or two old and nobody is buying them, the price was reduced to $.50 a disc. Cash only unless spending more than $ 10. I chose 4 packs of 5 DVDs, so scored 20 DVDs total, for $ 10+tax, just so I could use my credit card. I actually watch most of the Japanese stuff online, but I guess it feels nostalgic going into the video store and looking through everything. I have been doing that since before the Internet and it was all on VHS tape. So with that said, even though I don’t really have to, I will be back again. I am a creature of habit.

Great little place to get my Japanese video fix. Actually, my wife will rent a video there and they have English subtitles so I can follow along easily. Prices are good and if you pay for a stamp card, you get the newer videos for less and also after accumulating a number of these full stamp cards, you’ll get free videos. I just can’t remember the details of the awards program there but if you decide to rent a series of videos in an episode then the stamp card is the way to go. I did have a problem once with an unplayable DVD when I got home but they switched me out to a working one the next day. That was the only negative experience that I had there but you can expect that at any DVD rental place I would think. Kengo’s rating: «Ahhh ok»
