This place is pretty poppin’. Came here during July, the month before it officially opened on the First Friday of August which I missed :(but it’s all good. I took some dance workshops and classes; salsa, house, popping, etc. The guest teachers are good who are well respected in their dance style and art. Pricing of the class/workshop is reasonable. The space and atmosphere is aight. It’s not a decked out studio but it’s definitely something to be proud of representing the life and culture of underground dance and hip-hop culture. When there’s a lot of people in the studio, it can be very hot and humid and you will sweat. The ArtSmith mural logo is nicely presented. The staff and faculty are super cool. The place is all about the arts which I love. The studio is a collaborative ART space at The Chinatown Artists Lofts. The ARTSmith is a collective of artists striving to make their mark on the Honolulu Downtown-Chinatown arts district and beyond aiming to build and create an innovative and progressive foundation for the arts The collaborative staff are Curators of Hip Hop, Freelance Clothing, Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Jason Tom Human Beatbox, and many other talented visual artists. You have to ring the doorbell to get in. Someone will bound to let you in lol. There’s also beatbox classes and workshops taught by the Human Beatbox himself Jason Tom! The place is on the 2nd floor of the Mendonca Building which is located on the corner of Smith and Hotel Street. The entrance is on Smith Street, across from Little Village; in between the barber shop and courtyard. Parking is alright. It’s located in Chinatown so nuff said. Best parking is on Smith Street if you can find. Most of the dance classes are on weekday nights so you don’t have to pay for metered street parking.
