I was visiting from California and was uncertain if I would find a good Mexican food spot in such a small town; actually I thought it was highly unlikely. So I was absolutely thrilled when I found this place. It was more authentic than several of my usual spots in Los Angeles. I would suggest the chicken fajitas!

My family and I are visiting Horse Cave from Chicago. Saw this restaurant while getting groceries at the IGA and decided to stop for lunch. Hidalgo was a pleasant surprise. It is very clean, small and quaint. The food was authentic and tasty and the service was quick and friendly. There is not a big sign so if you aren’t looking you could miss it. The salsa arrived first and was some of the best salsa I have had. This is not chunky salsa, it is soupy but so flavorful. We ordered a side of guac, which had a good spice and a little cumin. Even my dad who doesn’t like guacamole, liked this. The Sopes were beautiful and yummy. I had an Empanada with beef. The beef was a little dry but the flavor was good. I tasted(and finished) someone’s chicken tamale; yum, yum, yum! The tacos were standard tacos. Another person had the chicken quesadillas and she loved them. I would say the tamale, salsa and guac were my favorite at the table. I would definitely recommend this little diamond in the rough. :)
