I’m a Yankee. The portions are big. The boiled potatoes are good if you sprinkle salt and pepper and the clarified butter from the crab.

If you’re looking for fried seafood platters and boiled seafood, this is your place. Good food but don’t expect anything too special.

The gumbo at Big Al’s was so delicious! My husband got the fried seafood plate. I snagged a few fried shrimp. Oh my goodness! They were the best fried shrimp I’ve ever ate. Next time I am in Houma I am definitely eating at Big Al’s.

We brought family there this past Saturday at about 7:00. Party of 6, we were seated immediately. Big Al’s is an old-school style, family place done up in cypress with gingham tablecloths, paper towel rolls on the table with hot sauce and so on. A lot like many of the New Orleans seafood places I ate in as a kid(I’m pretty old, by the way and most of those places are gone). A little Cajun and country music in the background and full bar with some good local beers set a nice tone. Our waitress took a moment or two to get over to us, but once she did, the service was as it always is: friendly, casual(everyone is «honey», «baby» or «dahlin’ :-D) We had for appetizers, the crab/jalapeño poppers, a crab cake, fried corn nuggets, hush puppies, and some of the ladies had gumbo or shrimp corn soup: The poppers were home made and quite large — not the small, pre-made ones from Sysco or someplace. The crab cake, likewise was homemade and very, very good. it had a good texture as though it was hand mixed. Sometimes this is a product that tastes like it came out of an extruder like a hot dog or something. Anyway, very good. The corn nuggets were like little fritters but better; creamy inside and crispy outside. Very good. Hush puppies were just okay; a but dense and bland but not bad. Just not great. Soup and gumbo were excellent. The soup is a broth soup, rather than a cream soup like a bisque. One of the ladies is from Michigan and it was too spicy for her, but not for us locals. Actually, it is just well seasoned but not hot. She’s just sensitive. :-) For meals, most of us had the boiled shrimp, potatoes and corn. I found the shrimp a bit hotter than usual but they were quite good, as was the rest of the meal. After you make a mess of the table, and your hands, you can go to the wash basin, turn on the tap and wash your hands with the soap. Right by the bar. Anyway, Big Al’s is a good local place with some of the best boiled seafood in town. Come to think of it, so’s their fried seafood too.

In here now. Wait is taking forever. Keep hearing the same thing«shouldn’t take much longer». The cracker bowl is gone. We had to get our own crackers too. Ridiculous. People have ordered, eaten and paid. We are still waiting.

This is the place to go if you want some delicious seafood in Houma! The atmosphere is very casual & the food is great! I usually like to recommend something to try, but in this case I can’t because everything was so tasty. Do try the crab stew!

Food was good and there was A LOT of it. I got Big Als platter and really we all 3 should have eaten it. Husband got the shrimp broil and he got the half a pound and was stuffed. My daughter got the Snow Crab broil and she got 6 clusters. Again tons of food and great service. A little $$ but for the food it’s good and now knowing the portion sizes we all could share a meal. Great choice for dinner

My husband and I decided to go here for a late lunch. The place was quiet and I could tell this was not their busy time. We were greeted quickly by our server who sat us. She was very nice and took our drink order right away. We had the turtle soup and soft shell crab as our appetizers. The soup was a little greasy. You could see the oil floating on top. The crab was wonderful! Very yummy! For our entrees I had the stuffed crabs with sweet potato fries and my husband had the alligator poboy. The food was good! I wish there had been a little more crab in the crab stuffing. It was mostly fillers and bread crumbs. The reason I’m giving this place 3 stars is because of the price. It’s extremely overpriced for being so close to the coast and in a fishing town. For everything we had plus tip we paid $ 70. It was a little outrageous. I feel like we could have gotten food just as good for half the price somewhere else. Overall our experience was good. We might return but not very often.

Went to an estate sale in Houma and ate here afterwards. It was good! Fresh seafood. We started off with some raw oysters. They were really cold, on ice, and perfectly briny. We also had some boiled shrimp. The boil was really good. The fried seafood was exactly like what you’d expect. I liked everything I had here. Service was a bit lackluster… nothing disastrous happened but we did need refills for a while. I wanna go back during crawfish season.

Boiled seafood on a Friday night, nothing like it. We had shrimp, crabs, potatoes, sausage and corn. All were hot and seasoned well except the sausage, it was cold. Service is always good and the beer is cold. We will definitely return.

Dungeness crab on point! Humongous portions on the pasta, plenty for two. On a Sunday night this place was half empty and service was great! I’ll be back.

Had crawfish, frog legs, pretty much anything you’d goto the Bayou for. Food was good. They only make so much jambalaya by night, so go in early if you want some.

The service was good, and the food was tasty. It arrived hot, and in a timely fashion. Just an above average seafood restaurant to me. I guess I expected more from the reviews, and locals recommendations.

This has been our ‘go-to’ place for great boiled shrimp and crawfish, but this year was super disappointing! The shrimp was overcooked and hard to peel. Apps are always good. Service was just barely average. They need to step it up.

This place is amazing! It’s a great local spot, with amazing food and service. The crawfish is the best I’ve ever had by far. For only having 6 draft lines, it’s also nice to see some craft and local beers on. Jordan(bartender) is really great. If you call him J-money after a few drinks he doesn’t mind. You do not want to pass this place up if you’re in the area!

Not as good as Nancy’s and more expensive too. But the boiled shrimp was good. The étouffée was soupier than I like but it was loaded with crawfish.

i would like to say I flew in from Indiana just to dine at Big Al’s Not! As a matter of fact I came to Houma La to work at Terrebonne hospital. The locals there strongly recommended Big Al’s and the boiled dinner. I found the place to be interesting to say the least, arriving a 6:30pm on a tuesday I expected to have to wait as the parking was filled. This was not the case. My server Kamren was wonderful. I asked about the boiled dinner and she was thorough and polite Oh that southern hospitality. As I have never had soft crab or crawfish she offered me a sample of crawfish and even demonstrated the proper techniques of pealing crawfish so as to eat. I can only hope this was not candid camera, what a site it must of been. My dinner arrived and I was proficient With The crab or so I thought! ROFL is almost what Kamren did when she saw my crab yes I removed the meat from claws, as Kamren pointed out I left the best part, I was given a crash course in eating soft crab and Oh my goodness it all was delicious. And there is a lot of meat. WOW. Defiantly recommend this place.

I feel bad for you Houma. You really lack in the seafood restaurant selection. They all seem to be waaaay overpriced. You would think that the fried alligator on the menu would be pretty good considering the location but it was so tough that we didnt even want it anymore. Thank goodness that wasn’t our first impression of eating fried alligator. Big Al’s has tons of appetizer choices and your usual fried platter options. There was nothing that anyone on our table ate(8 of us) that will have me coming back.
