This gallery is located in the upstairs section of what appears to be a house at the corner of a neighborhood. It’s easy to miss so look for the wood G out front. They plan on expanding the gallery to the building next door also. I will be back to check out the expansion project.

Darke Gallery showcases predominantly abstract art work judging from the I’ve seen at their openings. What’s more – they appear to showcase and promote local artists, which seems to be an increasing rarity in town unless it’s a co-op gallery. The gallery itself is located in a neighborhood. It’s a nice little spot that is a welcome mix to Houston’s eclectic gallery scene. I can’t recall the name the owner(Lynda Darke Swaynos) gave the room tucked away in the upstairs part of the gallery – but all I can say is look for the look for the leapord print!

I went here for its initial opening back in 2007. Don’t let the name fool you – although it sounds like it houses angsty art drawn by 15 year old Goth girls, it seems to focus mainly on Houston artists, as Sergio pointed out. A former residence located in the middle of the Rice Military neighborhood, the gallery’s double-decker format offers spacious, high ceilings and recycled gym floors. It’s hard to imagine the space as being anything but a gallery. I point to spaces like this as evidence that Houston has an abundant art scene for those who care enough to find it. It’s a teensy space and definitely off the beaten path, but true art junkies can get their fill if they look hard enough.
